The above figure is a combination of 120mm Model Cellar figures. The body is an extra Eddie R. figure that I had and the head is from a Manfred von R. piece.
I am converting the whole thing to a RFC pilot.I removed the emblems from the collar and from the hat and will replace them with the RFC type. The head will be glued down slightly lower than shown.
At present I am painting and weathering the portable gas/water mobile unit.I will post a pic when it is finished.

The above 2 pics are of the under and topside of the unfinished R/H wing assemblies.
The wingtips of both wings have been damaged in an accident.I made no attempt to tighten the fabric covering as i was afraid to distort the underlying delicate wing structure and anyway the wings would have been overstressed due to the accident.
I made no attempt to feather-in the rib tapes as it would be a waste of time due to their placement up against the hanger wall where they will only be seen across the hangar floor in dim light. The access holes and any portions that I decide to expose will be fitted with drag and anti-drag wires etc...and the whole thing needs more weathering.I plan to build only the R/H set of wings as the others could have been damaged beyond repair and sitting in a future junkyard out back of the hangar.

Iknow it is not an airplane but.....Here is an example of a great little diorama. It tells an interesting, humorous story that nearly everyone can relate to.It is the perfect example of a creative mind at work.
Dioramas do not have to be big and showy to be effective but they do have to make that emotional connection between the artist and the viewer.
Thank you Ken Hamilton for allowing me to use that pic.

The above figure Al Capp (Alias: Al Capone)the airport manager ,has only been slightly modified to take the bat out of his hands. He will be placed in conversation, gesturing with his hands as shown. The cigar will be eliminated for obvious reasons. That grey pinstripe suit looks pretty cool though. This is another Legends&Lore figure.

John

Fantastic work. I am in the middle of deciding whether or not to throw my first attempt at 1/16 scale against a hard wall (feldgendamarie I am trying to convert). Can't get the litttle b*st@rd to hold his MP40 convincingly. Might have to bury him in the backyard. Your work is inspiring.

Hi Guys! The weather here in Montreal recently has been lousy for figure painting outside so I havent made much progress in that area.As much as possible I prefer to paint in the natural light. The figure anatomy changes are finished and their poses and relationship to one other is being worked on now.
I think that I will position them in 2 main groups. One a pilots grouping and the other a mixed bag of barnstormers with the airport manager. Other single figures will be placed preforming various tasks throughout the hangar and in the modules.I plan very little activity going on in the front ramp area as I want the focus to be on the pilot grouping with the hangar doors sort of acting as curtains on a stage.I plan to lite up the ramp area using shaded bulbs shining down on the signs which should add to the dramatic effect.I should have some painted figures to show by the end of the week.Cheers! John.

Hi guys! Yeah I know its not a painted figure like I promised but it is a pic that I had been looking for earlier when I was posting info on the Jenny hangars roof. This is a shot up into the rafters that gives you a pretty good idea of how it is put together.
I have since weathered it a bit for a more natural look.
The figure painting has been slow over the last week but the newly aquired 31 Model A is safe and sound in the garage now so its back to the Jenny diorama full steam.
Cheers! John.

Well here goes!
To get back into the swing of things ,as I havent painted a figure in some time now,I have picked a subject that looks to be fairly easy to do.
As you can see I have added a completely different arm from another figure. It was epoxied on and sanded and sculpted to blend in with the original figure.Any small holes or pitting in the exopy surface was filled in with super thin superglue and sanded smooth.
The whole figure was then washed and dryed .Now for the painting!
I will use brown gesso as an undercoat as I plan to paint him wearing a brown suit.
I will thin the gesso down about 50% with distilled water and add a few drops of flow medium.Be careful not to fill in any detail and let it airdry.(do not use a hair dryer here as the gesso may form small cracks if dryed too quickly.)Relax and have fun and paint outside in the natural light if you can.
Cheers! John.

I got a few hours in painting today between thunderstorms.I used watered down (50/50 )burnt umber gesso as an undercoat, the remnents of which can be seen on the head ,feet and hands. Then I let the whole thing air dry.I used a small cats tongue brush for this.
I always paint from the lowest to the highest point on the figure. The lowest point on this figure is the white shirt. This I painted using a #3round brush and a mix of distilled water and JoSonja warm white paint.(your paint should have the consistancy of about 20% cream)Warm white is essentually white with a touch of raw umber in it to take out the starkness of pure white(titanium).Put on as many coats as it takes to cover the burnt umber.
Next I painted the tie Jo Sonja Burgandy as this seems to have been a very popular color in the 20's.
I took the left over burnt umber gesso and added some warm white until I got a shade that I liked.I didnt use flow medium here because the JoSonja product has varnish in it and I dont want any shine at this point. Here again I used a #3 round brush but a cats tongue could also be used instead. For fine line work I also used a #1 round to get into places that are to small for a #3.
to be cont......

Today I spent a couple more hours on the figure ,painting the face and hands and shading with pastels.
For you expert painters out there my methods will probably seem a little crude but like I explained before it works for me in a lighted diorama setting. My style is impressionistic(I think that is what they call it) as I dont attempt to paint in every detail but let the lighting work for me.(Anyway that's my story and I'm sticking with it)

The flesh color I made using white and yellow ochre to make a pale yellow then I added small amounts of burnt sienna until I got a flesh tone that I liked.I added a drop or two of flow medium and one drop of varnish to the mix.If you are using JoSonja paints the flow medium contains varnish already so be careful not to get things too shiny. With a paint consistency of about 20% cream carefully paint the face and hands.Apply as many coats as it takes to cover the burnt umber gesso.
The hair I left burnt umber as I had put it on thin enough that there were natural streaks in the hair already. The shoes I left burnt umber and polished them with my finger using a little nose oil.(I am not kidding here ,if you want a nice leather look rub your nose with your finger and apply to the shoes)This is called personalizing your figure with your own DNA.
I added a little more burnt sienna to the flesh mix and painted the lips and facial creases etc...
From here on all the shading was done with pastels.Because my paint is flat with very little varnish in it ,pastels stick to it very well .These figures ,once inside the diorama ,will not be subject to handling so pastels work very well for me.Simply take a dark grey or even black and apply a small amount to a dagger type soft brush and work the pastel in the low areas and around areas you want to make stand out such as pockets etc....I then took a little burnt sienna pastel and shaded in the face and hands.
Tomorrow I will finish painting some of the details such as buttons and the tie pin and finish off the shading process using overhead lighting like the figure will be subject to in the diorama.
Now isnt that simple.Nothing fancy and with a little practice very easy to master. The secret ,if there is one,is gesso, flat acrylic paint and the best brushes that you can afford.Any Questions?
Cheers! John.

My friend Brian wrote:
The figure is nicely painted. It is a bit flat but then you say that you will let the light work for you so I cannot comment about that. If I were painting it I would put in some low and highlights to give it more light but then my figures are not normally closed up inside a room or barn so the philosophy is different. I also think that if you are using Shep's method of light coming directly from the top as you siad, then you will still be putting in highlights on the high points. One particular area which needs sprucing up is the hair, it is just one solid mass of brown and needs some hgihlights to pick out the detail and not make it seem like a wig pasted on his head. I would also put in some lowlights on the skin. By the way I love the colour. it looks very natural. But once again, very flat indeed. i hope you don;t mind my passing these comments. I can;t stop looking at the pic of your car, Man is it beautiful!!

Hi Brian! I must admit that I rushed this one through a bit as I wanted to show just how easy it is to paint using this method.I will be spending a little more time on the details after I subject it to the proper lighting.
I know that a lot of folks have trouble painting figures and usually get them way too shiney especiall y when they are subjected to strong light.Detailing can come with practise once the basics are there.

I agree Brian, old Henry must have had a little of the artist in him too.It really is a beautifully designed car.Very elegant for its day. When I first got it I thought of adding things like trunks and racks and the like but now when I look at the car anything I could add would only spoil her flowing lines .
Cheers! John.

This figure was painted over a burnt umber gesso base. The coveralls are french blue with a touch of white added. The hat is paines grey with white added. The shoes are a mix off burnt umber and ultramarine blue to make a warm black. The flesh is the standard white, yellow ochre and burnt sienna mix.I have started to shade the coveralls using black pastel.Note;one hand is gloved but will not be seen when he is placed in the basketcase fuselage.
