Well it's back to figures for awhile. The first of the above 2 pics is a figure of John Dillenger by Legends and Lore. The 2nd pic is of Mr. Dillon my office manager.
As you can see the machine gun was replaced with a large ledger(a little distorted by the scanner but you get the idea)His other hand holding the hand gun was cut at the elbow and dropped to his side and the gun was removed.Very little else had to be modified other than colors.
The next pic that I will put up will be of Bonnie and Clyde the famous bank robbers.I will try to explain how I will go about modifing them .Clyde and Bonnie will have split up and she has become the barnstormers girlfriend.(Ah, those dashing pilots always get the girl don't they) Clyde will become the truck driver unloading a rope or chain from the back of the truck.I am doing these figures now as they will be placed in or around the red truck that I am presently weathering.

Well I can understand Clyde being a little ticked off at Bonnie's sudden departure but the scowl on Bonnie's face and especially the cigar will have to go.
I already have a rough idea of how I want to position them in the diorama but nothing is final yet.
I have already worked on Clyde's body and have begun painting it.I will simply replace the gun with a rope or chain that he will be unloading from the back of the truck.
Bonnie on the other hand is going to require a little work.

The Bonnie figure now has her arms. Her left arm was used as is but her right one required a little surgery.Neither arm has been permanently glued at this point.
As you can see ,I cut the right arm at the elbow and extended it .I sanded the joint and shaped it to conform to this new position.Because this arm was twisted as well as bent,I have had to change the musculature a bit. This new joint was drilled and pinned and then crazy glued together.Same procedure for the hand.
Now ,in order to sculpt the musculature I will use 2 part epoxy paste.I will over-build the areas that I want to sculpt and leave it to set for 24 hours.Because the arm is still free from the body this should not be too difficult. Also the hand requies some final shaping .
I will post a new pic after I have applied the 2 part epoxy .
Cheers! John.
The modeling is going a little slow these days as my 11 year old next door neighbour (he is like an adopted grandchild) is helping (?) me .He is a fast learner at modeling and flying computer games. He is already flying the Flight Simulator 2000,Concorde and all!

The following was posted on a site that Paul Ondeck the owner of Model Celler Productions has recently joined.

Thumbs up Thanks Guys!
Paul Ondeck, I dont know who the artist is that developed your Billy B. and Eddie R. figures but he may like to know that those two figures were what inspired me to do the "Memories of Flight School " diorama. When I saw the Billy B "thumbs up" and the laughing Eddie R figures I just had to build a storyline around them.
As a dioramist I owe so much to those mostly unsung artists who contribute so greatly to my dioramas.Without them I wouln't be able to do what I do ,as miniature sculpting of the human figure is an artistic challenge that I have yet to take up.After I get this diorama thing out of my blood (if ever) I hope to join the ranks of miniature figures carvers using wood as my medium as that is the material that I am most familiar with.Anyway thanks again and keep those great figures coming as we dioramists need all the help we can get!
Cheers! John.

Bonnie's arm after initial shaping of the epoxy. Now I will paint the whole thing with white gesso in order to find the hi and low spots and file again.
I am sure that she will feel much more like smiling after I remove the arrow from her arm! I plan to put goggles or binoculars left over from other kits in her hand.

The figure after 2 coats of 1/2 gesso and 1/2 distilled water.
I am happy with the glue joints of the modified arm but I find it looks a little stiff.Maybe once I put something in her clenched fist it will look a little better. The figure is actually looking inward towards the truck so I am not too concerned as it will only be viewable across the hangar floor through the windows.

Bet you guys didn't expect to see an OX5 engine after all this talk about figures.
Well someone asked me about weathering engines,so I thought that I would repeat a couple of posts from awhile back.
I plan to update all this with a step by step build of the next OX5, that I plan to put in the future engine room module, probably some time next Winter. Now that I know how to post pics using my scanner I feel confident about doing an indepth build of this engine, complete with weathering techniques.
I am presently painting Bonnie & Clyde right now so the two subjects maybe jumbled up for awhile.Hope you guys dont find all this too confusing.
Cheers! John.

I have begun to underpaint the figure.I have tried to soften her appearance a bit by giving her an old rose colored sweater and a greyish-beige skirt. She is a professional stuntwoman and wingwalker but not as hard as she looks especially now that I have removed the cigar and gave her a bit of a smile.I am tempted to also try to remove the heavy frowning eyebrows. We'll see...........

Here are some of the engine parts as they are in the kit.I put this pic up so you can see how the parts look before weathering. You will notice just how nice the parts are .Very little flash and well molded. In my opinion this is the best engine that I have built so far from a kit.Next winter when I get into the actual build up of this engine I will post better pictures at that time.

Painting of the Engine cylinders:The 8 silver-grey cylinders were deburred and cleaned and sealed with laquer.I experimented a bit with acrylic paint in order to get that nice heat- scorched look to the cylinder housings and came up with the following.I decided to spray paint a very thin mix of matte medium and a little copper over the laquer sealer. It may take 5-10 thin coats to obtain the desired effect. If it builds up a bit around the rings of the cylinders that is ok.Spray and dry(with a hair dryer) over and over. The matte medium will tone down the silver grey color and give the whole thing a more realistic look.

Bonnie's underpainting is just about finished. Now ,I will begin using the pastels for shading.I lightened up the heavy eyebrow look and I think she looks better now.I tried to dress her like a "flapper" from the twenties but not too flashy afterall she works in a hangar enviroment.
I will now finish painting Clyde and rebuild the Ford truck and work out the final relationship between the figures and the truck and where exactly to place this grouping in the diorama.

continuing on with the OX5 I sprayed the engine block assembly with a mix of raw umber-silver-matte medium thiinned with water .This gives the engine a dirty-oily look.I emphasized the crevaces and cracks with a very small brush. It makes a nice contrast with the cylinders. to be cont....
