The Bonnie and Clyde figures are finished for now. When I finally install them in the diorama under proper lighting, I will continue shading them with pastels where necessary.
The Clyde figure is shown holding a rope loosely in his hands to give you an idea of his final pose at the rear of the truck unloading the rope.(when finished the rope will be given weight and secured firmly to his hands)I didnt work a lot on this figure because most of his front will be hidden from view between the truck rear doors.I thought about removing the shirt and tie and replacing it with a work type shirt but this would only be a waste of time under the circumstances.
Next its on to finishing the weathering of the Model T truck.

When I put the cylinders and engine block together I found that the contrast in values of color too great so in order to bring the colors closer together I finished off the cylinders with the same raw umber-matte medium -silver wash as I used on the block.Hope this makes sense. to be cont......

Painting-Exhaust manifold got the copperish, heat scorched look I described earlier.
All the other parts were left as they were from the kit except for deburring, laquering, and several coats of matte medium. There is no point in gessoing and then spraypainting these parts back to the silver-grey color.Matte medium thinned with water gives these parts a nice dull sheen.
Further weathering of the engine will be done after assembly with pastels.

My next diorama
I have been thinking more and more lately about my next diorama. It will be a Wrightflyer 2 based upon the 1/16th Model Expo Wrightflyer 1 kit.The kit will require a few mods to adapt it into the 1 version.
This time I think that I will do something simple for a change.Just the airplane and a pilot figure at the controls.Maybe I will carve from wood a nice simple base.I would love to find a big plastic bubble of some kind to house it in.I plan to do the usual skeleton version with no fabric but in flight with a pilot aboard.I got the idea from the Griffwason site and I dont think that this has been done before as a model.Doing the Flyer 2 would also be different and a bit more of a challenge.

Does this sound familiar?
We must ask ourselves:why would an otherwise reasonably normal person forsake the pleasures of family, garden,TV,bowling, hunting, fishing, sailing,b arhopping, vacationing, fixing faucets, and playing poker to sit for years at a time, hunched over a cluttered workbench, squinting through an Optivisor, fashioning tiny bits of plastic(or wood)into what eventually emerges as a miniture representation of a long-extinct piece of machinery which few still recall and about which fewer give a damn?

The most rewarding goal is psychic satisfaction:knowledge that the finished product really is good-reflecting the best you had within you.Sure,it was an epic struggle, but it came out well, and now you can rest upon your laurels for awhile. You go out and lie on the hammock all afternoon(or until the bugs find you);rent a few old movies(Test Pilot,Men With Wings,Dawn Patrol-the usual fare);go to the zoo.But before long, the old urge begins to return(no,not that one, this one)and pretty soon you are back at the workbench, happily wailing away on your next masterpiece.

John Alcorn from his book ,Scratchbuilt! A Celebration of the Static Scale Airplane Modellers Craft. Cheers! John.

I just couldn't resist adding this figure to the diorama.I especially like the relaxed pose that the artist Jim Maddox has given this figure.Although it is a Montgomery figure from WW2 I plan to use it as a mechanic or civilian.Other than removing a little flash from the casting, the figure can be used as is.I will change the military beret to something more like a 1920's cap. When this figure is finished I will have (so far) 14 figures waiting to be put in the diorama.

Beginning to under paint Monty.I used straight French blue out of the tube for the pants, then I added a little white gesso for the sweater.Their was a little more flash here than other L&L figures that I have worked with but still it was pretty clean and the detail is sharp.Any flash is easily removed by scrapping the edge a new #11 xacto blade across the flash. The only change to the body was to remove the bar on his chest.
The head will require some work on the hat area.

The first of the above 3 pics is of a hat that was in style in the 20's.The next pic shows the Monty head with a brim added. The last pic is of the epoxy glue being built up where I need more volume for the hat above the newly created brim.Tomorrow after letting it sit for 24 hours I will shape it as required to look like the photo.

I finished weathering the truck today and it is now ready for the diorama.I took a leftover Red Indian gas sign and had it reduced to fit into the middle of the trucks sign which was formally Texaco.
I spray laquered both sides of the paper and glued it to a piece of 1/64 plywood then cut it out and weathered it by finger flicking sprays of raw umber with an old toothbrush until I was satisfied. Then I epoxy glued the sign to the truck and blended it into the side with pastels.

The Artistic Process

What is the Artistic process?

Start with an Idea...

consider the Alternatives

make decisions toward the Idea

watch for Happy Accidents(spontaneous discovery)

continuous evaluation, Flexibility

Evaluation,Reflection,Redirection as needed

Judgement (is the work Finished)

creation of an approprite display/Presentation

Don MacIntyre,Digital Dioramas.

Cheers! John.

My personal motto on dioramas is:
"Buy it if I can, scratchbuild it if I must"

For me it is a question of time.Given enough time most of us are capable of scratchbuilding just about anything. But unfortunately our time is limited .Dioramas are primarily about telling a story. It is the dioramists job to bring all the elements together to tell that story much like the movie director does to make a movie. The director realizes that in order to see his story come to life he has to do more than stand up there at recite the lines. He needs the help of many other artists to achieve his goal. That is why as a dioramist I have to depend on the help of many other artists, whether they are aware of it or not,to achieve my goals. My dioramas are really a cooperative effort of many unsung artists out there who have helped me along the way.
Imagine if I had to scratchbuild a model T Ford like I have just completed or the Jenny airplane or the figures or the many of the other elements that go into a large scale diorama.I would need my lifetime and 2 or 3 more to do it all!
As a dioramist I take no pride in scratchbuilding this element or that and I do it only if I must.In fact I take more pleasure in modifiy others work to suit my purposes.Weathering is something I really enjoy.I don't know why but taking something shiny and new and making it look used and worn gives me a special pleasure.
So when you look at my dioramas(or most of the others that I see out there) give a thought to all those other artists who have made their contribution to what I as the dioramist take all the glory for.
Cheers! John.

Here is the plan for the next little while. After I finish Monty's head today and finish weathering the Mercedes airshow car that I started a while ago,I think that I will start furnishing the future engine shop.
This coming winter the plan is to add the engine shop module to the diorama and finish the hangar's electrical wiring. After that is completed I should be ready to start placing things permanently in the main hangar.Hopefully by spring (man plans,
God laughs) the hangars interior and the attached modules will be finished. Then I will have to make the final decision on where to go from there.Everything after that will be modular add ons that can be constructed at any time.I could even deliver the diorama to the museum at that point and work on the exterior modules at home.
Eventually if I go that route,I could add a radio shack,a parking lot for all the old cars, and maybe even an old junkyard out back.
For something a little different I think I will start by building up a beautiful resin Mercedes aircraft engine that a friend of mine developed. The F-1466-3A 180Hp engine from the WW1 era..I have never worked with a resin engine before but it cant be that much different than plastic or metal engines that I am already quite familiar with.
Cheers! John.

For further info on this resin Mercedes 1/16th scale engine see http://www.wwi-models.org go to Galleries at click on Ken Foran. Also see Martin Wolf's gallery for a nice build (including pictures ) of Ken's kit.
I already have some experience with building a Mercedes engine for the Albatros. This engine is metal and not as refined as Ken's.
I plan to build this engine for the engine shop and will use my normal methods of construction and painting. This engine will be seen through windows in my diorama so I will not be going into as great detail as I would for a hand held model. For further research material see Martin Wolf's article on where to obtain it.
For you car guys I am sure that a version of this same engine was used in cars of the period ,so the info contained here should be of interest to you guys too.
Cheers! John.

The above pic is the best I have of the Mercedes engine as installed in my 1/16th Albatros diorama.Further research has revealed that the 100HP version of this engine was originally developed for the Automobile Technical Society in 1911.The larger 160 HP and 180 HP versions powered cars and aircraft in Germany for many years.
