Albatros D.Va Completed
Posted by wing_nut on Thursday, June 16, 2011 8:01 AM

"Hello boys, I'm baaack!"

Except for a couple little tiny bits my entry into "The Great War" GB is ready to take to the air... er... shelf.

This is the Wingnut Wings Albatros D.Va.  WOW what a great kit.  All of them are this good from what I here.  Great detail, full color instruction book with ref photos. And you have heard of "Tamiya fit" well the new standard will soon be "WNW fit".

Had an absolute blast building this. Hmmm?  Same type of fun when I started doing armor and was pulled to the dark side.Whistling

As great a kit as it is there is always some fun things to add.  The highlight, for me anyway, was the engine.  18 plastic parts in the box turned in to about 160 with all the nuts and bolts, wires and connectors, springs and caps etc.  Here is a A LINK to a group of WIP pics.

Rigging is 0.5 mm brass tubing with Uni thread for fly tying.  Same tubing used to make the spark plug and magneto connectors.

Thanks for looking.

Great build!   The engine in particular is awesome.

On the nose, what was your technique for the wear?

Also, what did you use to create the grain on the propeller?

Probably my favourite WW1 airplane & I love the colours on this one: Yes Yes...  If I had another hand, I'd give it a third thumb-up!

You have at least 4 hands on your arms and on your legs (on the legs they are called feet).

Thanks very much to all of you for stopping in and for the comments.

stcat... the spinner was chipped with the hair spray technique.  The prop was first painted with wood and brown acrylic then covered with burnt sienna artist oil.  This was wiped off leaving a thin film and that was streaked with a small piece of a Scotch Brite scouring pad.

Thad, no not kit decals but an aftermarket set put out by WNW.

The fork is officially stuck in this one.  Finished up all the bits and put 'er on a base.

The bench, sawhorse and tool box are all made form basswood.  The tools are from h http://vectorcut.com/accessoriesO.htm  Laser cut paper that's just simply amazing.  I don’t have a magnifier strong enough to see if it can be read but there is writing in the depressions in the tools handles.  The ground work is a mat from http://www.model-scene.com/

OK< now you're just showing off! Wink The kit itself turned out darn-near perfect, the base puts it over the top. Is this heading for a contest anytime soon??

Manny Thanks buddy.  And you are 100% correct about the schemes.  I could keep building D.Va's for a long time before I tired of it with all the cool schemes I've seen.

VC,  Thanks.  My club is doing IMPS Region II this year, JERSEYCON 2.  It'll be thereWink

Marc, great looking build.

Love the chipped paint on the spinner, and that colour scheme, you can't call it camo, looks stunning.

P38, Karl... thanks my friends.

Karl I never quite got the idea about the lozenge camo but I saw a photo thatt was taken directly above an airplane with lozenge camo in flight and it was surprisingly effective.

Marc, great to see you back building wingy thingies, and it's a bipe, so that makes it twice as nice. That's really a stunning build, and the base sure adds that extra touch of realism. Very well done! Yes

Beautiful build Marc, I'd like to say it inspired me to start my WNW Se5a but I'd only be disappointed with my efforts next to your beauty Bow Down, think I best practice some more first.

Cheers...

Anyone with any doubts about WnWs only needs to come and look at this beautiful model.  I have the D.Va hoping to get started before I wear out the instructions. The best about WnWs is you have no need for any after market parts, except rigging materials and paint, lots of paint.  So a $45 kit doesn't have to cost $200 to be presentable, and there are people to answer your questions if you get bogged down, and they do answer back.  Who else will do that?  I only hope I do a third as well as this build on mine.
