What technique do you use to mask and paint the canopies WITHOUT scratch the plastic (if you cut tape)? I've tried a few methods:

1. Micromask - SUCKS - don't use it - waste of money

2. Tape the whole thing and cut off the areas to be painted. Sometimes leaves unwanted cuts in the plastic.

3. Paint over the whole canopy and use a toothpick to scrape away the unwanted paint. I've gotten the best results with this method. No scratches and you can get very detailed.

I freehand with occasional masks in the areas I'm painting..

As for your using method #3 with anything but Tempera...

I usually use Tamiya tape to mask and use a brand new Xacto knife blade to lightly cut where need be.  My alternative is to purchase Eduard Masks when I can afford them.....

I usually use a high-quality painters' masking tape cut in thin strips for longer runs; cut in squares for corners & small panels. Once the tape is in place for the "borders" I fill in the middle with MicroMask. If there are a lot of frames I will sometimes spend a session masking + taping all in one direction, then spending another section doing the other direction. (Nobody ever said they had to all be done at once!)

I've tried method #3 with Tamiya. I was lazy and didn't want to set up the airbrush, so I brushed it on and still got pretty good results. I bet it would be a lot better with an even coat from airbrushing. They key is it must be totally dry or you'll smear the paint. I then dipped a toothpick in Future and went back over the clear plastic once all the paint had been removed. You might give it a try on the spare canopies that came with the Mitchell.

I could see that working with Tamiya acrylics. I've corrected small sections after airbrushing, never thought to try it with an entire section on purpose though. (I dipped the toothpick in some Windex to help the process) You need a flat/dull toothpick though to avoid scratching the clear parts though.

#3 works best for me.. using Testors paints.. Cuticle sticks work  very well to easier to handle...

Are you guys kidding me?  After messing with these canopies on the B-25, I'm ready to start building nothing but bubble top fighters!!!!  Pics of my completed build coming up shortly.

Yeah I never even thought if spraying the whole thing on purpose until I was researching methods for canopy painting and came across a video about it on YouTube. Gave it a try and it works really well. I hate taping up canopies... It's one of my least favorite parts of modeling.

Also - not putting a lot of effort into the interior... but I am never dry brushing with acrylic again. At least Tamiya. Testors enamels work A LOT better.

Also - I didn't have OD in Tamiya acrylic, so I used some MM enamel for the fuselage. I am getting some sections of lighter color. I'm not too knowledgeable on the difference of enamels/acrylics. I know enamels take a LOOONG time to cure compared to acrylics... but when sprayed through an airbrush, it seems acrylics are better for covering a large area with equal paint density. I find it hard with enamels on large areas...

I hear you....that is why I used pre-made paint masks for my B-25...I just didn't have the patience I once had and save the homemade masks for fighters....

Unless Hutch is not installing any landing gear on his plane...

Reasoned, do you not have the plastic light covers installed on the wings? Or am I blind? lol

RTFI, Icer .... It goes in BEFORE you join the halves .... If you didn't follow the instructions, you're gonna have to undo the nose join...

If you didn't join the halves with CS, you can soften the bond and get it apart with Testor's Liquid Cement, pink bottle.. Use a small, 1-0 brush to put the cement into the joint...

Sorry it took so long to get back to you...I have been away the past few days.  I believe I will be able to still install the landing gear, but I am sure it will be a challenge.  Yes, it will be a ceiling hanger, so I will see what challenge awaits.  I'll let you know, as I plan to take some time tomorrow with it.

UGH! I think I caught the curse... I've made so many mistakes and accidents on this build, I've just stopped putting detail on everything, painting it one color and gluing it together. So my finish build is going to be pictures taken very far away from my model. lol

I want to get this kit again and do it right. Bleh...
