If I may ask, do you draw the cartoon girls yourself?  If not, where do they come from?

Thanks, Jim

He does it himself, if we may believe him, which I gladly believe.

Chuck,
Looks like another interesting subject,
I have this one myself waiting in the stash.
Definitely gonna pick up a thing or two here! (as always)
Seems like you already took off with a nice start!

Got any particular paint sheme in mind since none were ever build?

With regards, Ninetalis.

Look like another great model. And I like the aircraft to...

All kidding aside, I think I see a difference in this cartoon girl when compared to the ones in you Ju-388 tread. There is some more depth in the skintones etc. Or is it just my imagination?

Yep, seen Chuck's evolving artwork since he started with a stick figure doing a Double Dog Dare on his old Helldiver build. Thanks for the send up again Chuck, you rock Dude!

I have followed a number of previous build threads that Chuck has published.  I believe he does artwork for a living.  Seems like I read that some of it was for computer games or some such.  His ladies do add some nice flavor to his builds.  Beats the heck out of the usual "here are 4 pics of what I did" posts.  I have learned a fair amount from following Chuck's builds and this one will be another nice one As I have this kit myself.

OH!  Hey Chuck! Since you are on such a tight build schedule, maybe you should try this:

Build and take a lot of photos during the build.  Then when done make up the posts as you have time and enjoy both the build then enjoy putting the posts together as you have time.  This is what I finally decided I had to do.  Putting together the posts were doing serious interruptions on my build progress.

Excelent start and the engine grind looks impressive--cough cough-- from here.

Although, like Moon Puppy said it's not so much the build as the cause (fund to fight Cancer), I know I'll be able to pick up a thing or two from this build.

Just renewing my subscription to "The ChukW Build Diaries"... Looking like some nice pieces to start working with. I can't yet decide if I like the look of the Me-509 yet though.

I saw the mention of the ME509 build on the other thread, and had to go searching.  I saw a review of the kit and thought to myself 'that's an ugly bird!'  But then remembered that Chuk mentioned he might display (actually acquire, build and install) the engine and figured that since Chuk's doing this, it'll be quite the silk purse afterall.  :-)

I'm already enjoying this!

Great start, Chuck!  Your shot of your device makes me want to ask, though--do you build any Ma.K, too, and if so, do you have a build blog or gallery some place?

Nice to see the girls coming along, too Wink

Best regards,

Brad

With Pfennig cracking the whip and calling the shots, there's no question Chuck will be done by December 29. Big Smile

Otherwise, remember those old Barry Manilow and Air Supply albums I mentioned in the Me-109 thread? "As the Turntable Spins..."Big Smile

Hey Chuck, when you were using your dremel as a lathe, how did you stop the plastic melting. Ive tried in the past and the friction just makes it too hot.

I know Chuck has a proper answer, but for me ( ) when doing this, I make sure not to press too hard or long in any one spot. Just lightly touch the file/sanding stick/blade, at the slowest speed your motor will turn, letting each pass remove a small amount.

The old "tortoise philosophy" - slow and steady works for me.

I'll second that, Steve.  I have an older and simpler Dremel, single-speed, and I learned to use a light touch when shaping plastic--whether sprue, like Chuck did, to make oxygen bottles, or to clean up tires, etc.

Cheers, guys- and thanks!  The Baron got it right, ScorpioMikey!  Itake slow and let the plastic cool periodically.  I stopped because it did soften and bend as I got the end nice and skinny, so I stopped.

Yeah!  What you have posted looks really great so far!  I believe that it has to be DONE today, (the 29th) so hopefully you have been a building fool and gotten it finished.  Looking forward to seeing the rest of the process.

I would have considered entering this contest as my late wife died from *** cancer.  While I am actually doing some building these days, it isn't consistent and I realized that I probably wouldn't have finished the kit in time.  (wouldn't have mattered what kit)

Hope you have it finished and good luck on the drawing!

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss,  Paul.   My Dad died from colon cancer- it's horrible business indeed.

I was mistaken back at the start of the build- and I thought I had mentioned it here- but I have until the end of January!   Seeing as the basic airframe is assembled, masks are on the way and pretty much the landing gear and doors, canopy, prop and fussy bits are all that's left, I have a chance. Engine done, cockpit done, fuse, wings and stabs all assembled.  Gotta fill seams- but I still have three days of vacation to move a head.  I think I'll start a post right about now and finish that up tomorrow.

Thanks again for the kind words and support!

I see Hanna was all dressed up for New Years! Surprise Wow

The 509 is looking quite good so far!  What you have done with the aftermarket items fit quite well with what might have been done on this aircraft.  Too bad it was never built, it was planned as a next step from the Me 309 which had the engine in front of the pilot.

Have a great New Year all!

Thanks, guys!

Trey, those bezels could be better- and will be next time!  Not so hard to do if you have a punch set.  I used the Waldron Sub-Miniature set- just the thing for the tiny frickin' gauges on this weird panel!

Thanks, Paul!  I wish I had time to build a new cockpit- the kit is full of science fiction designed by somebody with, seemingly, no knowledge of aircraft or ergonomics.  ;)  A good Ultracast Me109 seat with belts has been used to good end by another modeler in his build- I swiped the engine idea from him as well.

Thanks again, Mike!

I have started on the landing gear and covers- more to follow!

I found out a long time ago that rainy days are no good for painting (and I was in southern California over the holidays and there were a couple of rainy days around Christmas). I've had the paint do funny things.

Alas- life has intruded and I will not make the deadline.  The good news:  we did raise a wad of cash for cancer research- and had fun doing it.  Many will participate in the raffle for some swell prizes- and your truly will do the drawing.  Stay tunde!  As for this build:   Landing gear are well on the way (heck, I'm going for broke)- a desert Kubel has been added, along with a base that will have what I hope will prove some very innovative features.  Again- stay tuned!  :D

As you said Chuck!  We had some fun, raised a chunk of cash for cancer research and some folks will get some neat swag out of the deal!

Alas for my build, it turned out I chose to build one of the worst fitting kits Forge World makes.  Read some other reviews and it was the same on all of them.  Have done well but with the poor poor poor (about 5 more "poor" here) fit on virtually all the parts, it needs about 2 more weeks minimum.  This way it will end up with a lot more neat things done to it than I would have had time for.

Looking forward to more of your wonderful updates!  And better a build your proud to show off than a slap job you would rather put in file 13.

So this build has morphed from a throw-down to a proper Chuk-job?  I look forward to seeing how you cut open the belly of this beast and fab up the bottom-end of the engine, fully-displaying the open crankcase with crankshaft and rods!!!

But I don't want to give you any ideas.  Propeller

Thanks, guys!  Ernie, I do my chipping with a finely-pointed brush and Vallejo Dark Sea Grey.  I'll be doing a bit of overspray with thinned base colors to knock some of the chipping back a bit, and adding fresher scrapes and bangs with graphite and silver pencils.  The idea is that the older chips get dusty and oxidized.

I hope to get the camo on this weekend- and maybe get a start on the matching Kubel as well.  ;)

Slick solution to a "sticky wicket".

But now for my "its not dumb to ask a question" question ; do you sand/file the white out with a very fine pad/stick ,as you would a "normal" filler after it drys?

or  is it wiped with a thinner type product  before it  completely dries? just leaving it in the seams.

ps good luck on your pups report.

Good question, Duster!  Sand it with a fine grade- rougher grades will just pull it all off.   BTW, get the smelly (non water-based) Stuff!   Thanks- we're still waiting to hear about Andi, but things are looking a bit better.

Hey Chuck, about the white out, is there a solution that you have found work with it, so I can apply it and wipe off excess filling the seam? As opposed to dry then sand.

I wouldn't try that- it dries so quickly there would be a raised "lip" around the edge of the white-out.    Really, I use this technique because it can be done so quickly, it hardly interrupts the painting process.   :)

Here's an update at last!  Andi seems to have recovered and is back to full health, my job is hopping and my wife and I are well.  That said, things do keep cropping up and modeling has to take second fiddle- and posting plays trombone.  I had to cut this update short- look to the last pic for a teaser of where I am now.  ;)/>/>

Reasoned, I'm so sorry to hear about your mother's passing.  I lost my father to cancer twenty years ago, and a dear friend just last month as well.  I'm proud to say we raised  over 1,300 bucks witha simple group build.  Maybe all forums should do this periodically.  Hmmm....

Great idea for holding up the plane! Something different without fooling with the nose weight.

That's another great use for those "cheapo" make-up sponges, too.  I've found numerous uses for them on my workbench, from wiping the rim of the paint bottle after opening it (a lot less messy than napkins) to using them as small cushions for painted parts that I don't want to scratch.

Interesting touch for the edging on your dio, Chuck!

What's your recipe, when mixing Celluclay?  I find it necessary to add some white glue to it, and I also learned to make sure to spread it evenly, so it cures evenly, to avoid curling at the edges.

Ah Chuck!  The work is looking quite nice on the Kubel there and the plane is great as usual!

On another note, My FLHS got in their order of the 2 new HK B-17 kits.  Mine was set back for me and the other walked right out the door as they came in.  As I am moving at the moment, I didn't go ahead and pick it up, but did take a look see and let others around have a view.

On looking thru the instruction book lo and behold there is a LARGE thank you note to all the test builders and of course your name was on the list too.

Can't wait to get this move done, (I hate packing!) so that I can go pick up my kit and thoroughly check it out!

Well Chuck, I too am glad to add my voice, to say,

  Great Job.

The rework on the camera  boy  er  man  was just inspirational (in my never ending quest of "how come that fig is too small/large  and what to do about it.") I now know surgery!  (maniacal laughter optional, but likely)

 RAUALDUKE is partly correct about the f stop.     However during the African daytime, after September 29th, just before vespers, such a setting would be apropo, for a 15 minute period;

thus you have once again shown us your mind numbing er true attention to detail.
