Hey Joe, back on page one you mentioned a "light post-shading" as the finishing touch on the cockpit.

Could you enlighten me, please? Brush, drybrush, airbrush??? The only post-shading technique I know of is with airbrush, and has to do with exterior panels, not offices.

I'm trying my darndest to emulate your instructions on my Stuka. Almost done.....

Greg, I get in close with an airbrush with the same diluted XF-69 NATO Black and XF-64 Red Brown mixture cut with 91% Isoprophyl Alcohol (I keep it premixed in a paint jar).  I use it in corners, along lines, in crevices around boxes anywhere too add depth.  It als gives it a used appearance.  It does work better on lighter cockpits though, such as US interior Green and RLM 02 subjects.

Thanks Kyle.  Gunze's RLM 70/71 do tend to be on the brown side.  The Buff is added in later for weathering.  Tamiya doesn't make an out of the bottle match for RLM 71 and you have to mix it., which is recommended by mixing half XF-62 and half XF-49.  I don't think it looks right.  I dont even think their XF-27 looks right for RLM 70.  I used to mix this formula until I discovered Gunze Aqueous, which looks perfect for me right out of the bottle.  The problem is that the Gunze Aqueous line is very hard to get now.  

Your asking the wrong guy about exact color matches and stuff.  I've never been too concerned about exact matches and such.  I just go by what looks right to my eye.  I also prefer Gunze's Olive Drab which is more brown too.  Tamiya's looks like forest green to me..to each their own I suppose.

joe- beautiful build! i just stumbled on this. i finished the same kit a couple months before you started and wished i did it after. i built it out of the box and now wished i followed your lead in the pit.

question: your RLM 70/71 has a more of a brownish tinge i'm assuming by adding in the Tamiya Buff, or are the Gunze RLM 70/71 lean on the brownish side as compared with the Tamiyas XF-61/XF-27 (that i used, can't get Gunze paints where i live) which are more green? from file photos and the limited color references i used, i can never really figure out accurate depictions of the RLM camo colors. what references did you use to decide on the brownish tint?

The GB's have taken over a bit, especially when it come to actual builds. Some times it does get a bit much with so many GB's, but that's the way it goes when we are allowed to run them as and when we wish.

I hear ya Bish.  I'm the same way about responding to most things.  I'll add my 2 cents when it's something I'm well read in, but often times I'll keep a lid on it because I'm certain that others out there who likely even have the real world experience of working on these aircraft will know better.  Sooo.... I guess that's not so difficult to understand.  I guess I wasn't aware of the GB thing being so huge, but that's not so hard to understand when all the Tag Cloud phrases seem to reflect it.  =]

By the way...I've committed to 4 or 5 myself this year. lol  I have no idea how I'm going to get them all done!!

bvallot. I would not get to disheartened. I think a lot of the time it needs the right person to see your request. I will often look in on posts like that, and if I think I can help I will try my best, even if it means I might have to do a search for something. But sometimes I might not have a clue and would have no idea where to look. So I think sometimes we pop in but don't replay assuming someone with more knowledge will come along and help.

Over the last 2 or 3 years the forum has become far more GB orientated. We went through a period or trying to encourage new people into GB's, but we might well have done to good a job. As one long time well respected member the_doogs, has pointed put a few times, there is far to few WiP threads. I am sure anyone her4e who knows me knows how much I ike GB's, all my builds over the last 6 years have been for GB's, but it does limit things and I think that is why input does seem spares at times. If Joe had limited his build to the Stuka GB, you would have all missed out.

I think we all need to work at getting more diversity in the forum. If doing a GB build, just think if it will be of interest to those not in the GB. It really doesn't take much extra work to duplicate the posts. And if we see someone who wants to build a kit but there is no GB it would fit into, try and encourage them to do a WiP. Hopefully we can get people to look beyond the GB section and spread things out more.

Now having said all that, I better get on with my current build, for a GB.

It's funny you mention that Joe.  I've been beginning to wonder the same thing recently.  I first got on here to improve and learn from the guys that have been doing it longer, but lately I'm seeing the same trend where the input seems a little sparse.  I've mostly got the hang of things now, but if I throw out a specific question about something I'm struggling with it feels like a rare moment where someone will throw me a bone.  =P

Another masterful build Sir! I try to avoid posting up a lot during wip unless I have something really positive or constructive to add,its too easy to crowd the thread , I do appreciate a good wip such as this so please continue!

Buckeye:  Family Hobby?  I'm going to have to take a jaunt down Pearl Road to check that one out.  How's their selection?

Joe, their selection is pretty good for a small store.  I was at Parma Hobby several years ago and their selection is maybe a little smaller than Parma's if I remember right.  Are they still in business?  They have great stock of materials for scratch building, lots of paint, modeling tools, etc. and they know their stuff too.

WIPs inspire us to go build something ourselves.  If no one is commenting here, it's probably because they've stepped away from the computer and over to the bench.

And yes, I'd love some base-building inspiration! 

Hey Joe, I just want you to know that your Stuka is truly amazing. Your techniques really are top notch and I am very grateful that you take the time and effort to share them in detail. You are certainly at the top of game.

I hope that maybe I can ease your trepidations towards WIPs. I am currently one of those that  just pops in takes a quick gander at a WIP here and there. My current life situation simply does not afford me the time to peruse all the threads that I would like to. Given that I use my free time for the bench more so than the forums at this time. Trust me, I would absolutely love to have the time to comment on and enjoy all the WIPs as well as all the other threads that are ongoing here. But, at times, I get a chance to get a look around and quickly check some work and tips. Most times I am totally unaware that a particular WIP or even GB is occuring until late in the activity. I participate in one GB per year as that is all my time alots. My point is please consider that there are some of us that simply can't get around to everything on the forums. Usually when I get some extra forum time I try to make a conscious effort to get over and greet newcomers. So, please do not be dismayed Joe. We are here and enjoying your work with complete eagerness. What you contribute to us and this forum is deeply appreciated. Come the end of the year I will be freed of some of my burdens and then have more time to be active on the forums and certainly enjoy your fantastic builds..

I enjoy and appreciate the wealth of knowledge passed on to us and employ most of the techniques offered.  I am becoming a much better modeler because of them and loving the hobby more and more.  I don't always post on them because I'm running out of superlatives and fear redundancy.

Joe, I know what you mean about WiP threads. But I think that's the nature of the forum. We seem to have lost a lot of these threads over the past few years in favour of more GB's. But this does limit the audience to those in the GB's, so like you I have started doing a lot of my GB builds as WiP threads as well.

I would take the limited comments as a compliment. There's only so many ways of saying your doing a good job, and unless people have a suggestion or have noticed something you may have missed, it can be hard to say anything.

So keep em coming and lets see if we can widen the range of WiP threads.

CN:  I can do a tut on my bases if you would get some use out of it.  Perhaps on my next build (likely going to be a Tamiya Mosquito FB).

Derek:  I "generally" mix brown and black, depending on the application.  RLM 66 usually gets just black because its darker.

Great work! I'm thinking of getting The Detailer washes, and I wanted to know if you would recommend getting any color other than the black. Do you use the black wash exclusively, no matter what color it's going over?

The internet is great but to me there's nothing like going into a store where you can see and get hands on to all the products.  Not to mention talking to other modelers.  I still have Family Hobby down in Medina but if that goes...........
