Bish, Eric... first off thanks for taking a look and the nice comments.

Bish, if you look at a lot of the armor painting/weathering videos by guys like Mig Jimenez et al, a big part of what they talk about is getting tonal various in the colors.  A lot of that is achieved with pigments and oils etc but in my mind that should all apply to aircraft too.  A guy that used to post here is big on this technique but can't tell you if it's his idea or not. He calls it black basing.  After you do the squiggly/mottled color the color coats are applied thinly to let some of that unevenness come through.  Leaving the panels line a little less covered is sort like the standard pre-shade method which I think looks too straight and even.  I am just starting out with this technique and it's tough learning went to stop the coats of paint.  Very easy to over do the color coats and cover that up too much.  My pictures conceal most of the effect but it is most obvious on the underside as Eric mentioned.  But it's there is the upper sides too.

Here is doogs website on this technique and he has it down pat.  The A4 Skyhawk at the top of the page is a perfect example of what can be achieved.

Damn that is looking really good Marc! I blinked and this one was crossing the finish line. I really how the effect of your pre-shading comes through the bottom color. I am going to have to give this technique a go on a future build.

Now that is sweet, love those colours. But I am curious. Your post on the 22nd, you had that spotty covering, but leaving the panel lines out. What was the reason behind doing it that way.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

After these the next one will be the completion.

3 days for food and drink I was very happy to close my pie hole, stay in my PJ's all day yesterday and have a marathon session.  Just a few LG bits to add to complete to aircraft then just getting the ordnance put together and mounted.

Thanks Nathan.  The only ref photo that I've been able to find... actually it was shown to me so I can't take credit for finding it... is this aircraft in a what I assume is a Cuban museum.  Freshly painted, or close to it, so as far as I'm concerned both of those facts make it a much less reliable reference.  I am 1st to admit I don't know a lot about my subject and even more so in this case.  If it's true the Cubans painted over that stuff all I can say is..

WOOHOO!!!!!!!Stick out tongue

Having said that it will look cool with all the stencils so I may just exercise my right of artistic license here.  What about he Russian MiGs?  Did they have the stenciling?

Nathan, Eric, Johnny... thansk guys.

Nathanthe stuff is Incredible White Mask Liquid Frisket. STINKS to high heaven.  Goes down looking like thinned white glue then dries clear.  Absolutely no issues with paints under it or sprayed on to it.  The blu tack is just that, the original Bostik Blu Tack.

Very nice Marc, and excellent masking. So the liquid frisket doesn't react with the paint? Ane what brand of blue tac are you using?

It looks like I forgot top mask between the blu tack worms but I filled it in with liquid frisket.  WOW  did that make it super easy.  Problem was that it sticks tot he blu tack and it would have take forever to separate the 2 and I'll bet I never would have gotten it all.  So all that blu tack is not in the garbage.   When I get into all the Spitfires I recently bought that will get expensive.   To bad cuz as I said... crazy easy.

Once again the effect of the black basing is there but very hard to see for 2 reasons.  The pictures being 1 of them.  The other is that brain process that when you are laying down thin coats of paint and get it to the point you say it looks right.... you've gone to far. Gotta work on that.  The effect is there though.

The bottom was taped.

Nice work Marc! This is the first build that I have followed of Eduard's Mig 21 series and its been an interesting one seeing how it goes together and what to expect on those joints. I love the scheme you have chosen to do and can't wait to see how it turns out!

The up side to waking up a 4 on a Sunday morning... added bench time.   Air frame was finally to the point of getting it "black" with Mr. Finishing Surfacer black primer.  This morning was time for some Star Trek TNG and getting the basing down in prep for the color coats. Mixed a gray that works and got the underside based and painted.  Gotta love the fast drying Tamiya paint.  get the initial "wet" off with a hair dryer, watch and episode of TNG and ready for masking. Forgot to snap a pic of the gray before masking.  Upper surface done with a Tru-Color mix of flat light blue and big sky blue

Very nicely done.  You were able to take care of the gaps and have your aircraft look fantastic.  Great job.

Thanks Nathan. yeah that little gap just forward of the windscreen was an odd little bugger. I had to pop that piece above and in front of the IP off to get the windscreen to fit too.

Ohh awesome update. Strange you had a gap issue on the bottom there. The only trouble spot I had, and I see you had one too, is with that insert piece right in front of the windshield. It falls on a natural panel line, but I had some gaps, so filling then rescribing was not fun. I also had a tough time making sure the windscreen didn't interfere with the resin gunsight. I had to sand away at the piece that goes on top the instrument panel quite abit. Good luck and nice job!

Plugging away at the MiG.
I was worried about damaging the sharp tip during the build so I cut the cone in the intake off the mounting ring since it would not fit once the fuselage was closed up.  For the nose weight I added a few BB's then filled the space with tungsten powder, alternating until it was full.  A few drops of CA seals it all.  Came in at just over 1/2 oz.

After attaching the ring at the front of the fuselage the inside was sanded to get a nice sharp edge but the was a small step on the outside that was sanded down smooth. A double thick strip of tape to guide a JLC saw blade around to scribe the line.

A few fit issues that were easily corrected with some sheet plastic.  I think the fuselage was from the resin cockpit tub.  No explanation for the one when the wings are put in place or the weird one by a front fuselage filler part.

I cut the groove deeper for the PE wing fence with a piece of a JLC saw blade.  A perfect fit and a stringer bond with some CA.

Cockpit done and the wings go on tonight.

Joe, Allan... thanks guys.

Nathan, I picked up some x14 today and it looks promising.  Boy howdy it's bright though.  Got some dark blue Tru-Color to add to the blue from the A4 tail.  I'll see what looks best but I have a ways to go before that comes into play.

I did find the GB thread before. I was very pleased with myself for remembering you said you were late with the entry so I started from the end and went backwards to find you WIP. I saw the 2 blue bottles but couldn't make out the 25. They suggest H323 but according to "The Ultimate Model Paint Conversion Chart" there isn't anything equivalent of what I use. If there is a blue i can add to the Tru-Color blue i sued on the tail of my A4 to darken it a bit without loosing the brightness that might work.
