Looking great Dog. I have that ROG F8 and it's a gorgeous kit. The pit needs some pe cause the molded details are a bit weak there but the engine is a small kit in itself.

Really nice paint job Lawdog, I'm a bit envious as to how your schemes come out. What kind of paint do you use?

Thanks guys. My next 1/32 build will be the Revell FW 190 F-8 with a fully exposed Eduard engine and cowl guns. Talk about out of my comfort zone.......doh! Gonna squeeze in a few other builds first....

Excellent work, as always! Can't wait to see it finished, as I have one I am itching to build, but don't want to step out of the 1/48 comfort zone quite yet.

Awesome work with the interior, Joe, it looks fabulous! Loving the paint scheme on this one, too. I look forward to seeing this build come to fruition!  Smile  Yes   Yes

Thanks Matt. I have the Brassin brass gears on hand so I shouldn't have an issue there. I was also considering replacing the prop hub but I decided I'm going to work with the kit one.  Glad to have you aboard..

Lawdog,

Looking great there, I built this one a while back (the last 109 GB) and found it to be ok, somewhat tricky on some of the seams, but it was a fun build.  I replaced the MLG with the Brassin copies as I broke both of them in the construction. Will be following your build.

Thanks Brandon. I'm really enjoying it. The mottling is certainly easier. This won't be my last in this scale.

Awesome colors, it's really starting to look the part. How does it feel to paint a larger scale?

Great read PJ.  Thanks alot.

Well, I sat down and got this turkey painted.  I intend to do the cover subject, Franz Dorr's JG 5 mount.   I started with a preshading of the panel lines XF-1 Flat Black (I know...my preshading is never pretty) then added the yellow wing tips and fuselage band per Revell's instruction.

I always add a touch of XF-7 Flat Red to the XF-3 Flat Yellow to make it more RLM 04-like.  It also looks better to me.

After I taped off the yellow and added the black part to the fuse band, I shot Gunze RLM 76.  I then added XF-2 Flat White and made condensation streaks.

Then I took my trusty mix of XF-64 Red Brown and XF-1 Flat Black diluted with alcohol and postshaded it until it looked dirty.

Gunze RLM 75 was next. It also got streaked in the same manner as the 76.

Gunze RLM 74 was next.  I used rolled blue tac for the demarcation lines on the wings.  Everything else, including the fuselage mottling was done free hand.  I used low pressure ang in close.  I finished it off with another postshade concentrated around the engine and exhaust area.

Time to start on the small stuff.

Found the article Dog. It's a good source of information and a couple of things can be easily corrected.

I have in my stash the 1/32 ROG G-10 and Trumpy K-4, G-2/Trop and E-7. I also have the Zvezda 1/48 F-2. I guess you can see that I like the 109.Wink

Thanks PJ. I've had some drop fit resin cooperate in the past, but like you said  usually there are issues. I'm glad you had better luck with this thing but I struggled. I still have a set of brassin landing gears to add so I'm crossing my fingers.

Thanks Hunter, your very kind...

The problem with the resin parts not fitting wasn't operator error. It has been my experience that just about ALL resin replacement parts dont fit as drop in parts. I'm currently working on the Revell 1/32 Salamander and none of the so called drop in resin updates made specially for this particular model drop in. I've had to do lots of sanding, grinding and slicing to get things to fit.

As usual you are turning out outstanding quality in your detailing and build.

I built the same Revell Gustav OOB For the 109 Group Build a while back and had no fitting issues at all. I also found the molded details adequate and just added some pe seat belts. There is some minor shape differences with the bulges and I think the prop blades but to my eyes they looked ok. I also used the included kit decals that were very good.

There is an article somewhere that I read that reviews and compares this kit to others. It also says that you can actually make a couple of variants by simply deleting some of the recessed hatches.

Thanks Brandon. I actually kind of like the blisters. They're cool looking to me.

Very nice work, again Joe. Watching you add the blisters to the kit makes me see clearly why the pilots referred to this 109 variant as "the boil". Super nice work on a scary scale for me. The size is a bit intimadating.

Even with all these issues you described, your build looks fantastic!  I'm anxious to see what paint scheme you'll choose.

Thanks Toshi.  I'm doing the scheme on the box cover.

Thanks guys.  Your all way too kind.

I'm in for a quick update.  I'll tell ya, this thing has been fighting me pretty good.  Before I started this thing, I did some research on other builds of it.  The general concensus was that it was a decent kit that could have been much better.  So far I'd have to agree wholeheartedly.  For some reason, I had issues closing the fuselage around the Eduard pit, eventhough it was supposed to be a drop fit replacement.  This I figured was operator error as these can be tricky sometimes.  After I got it all closed, I went to add the top gun cowl piece. The fit was ok, but my research of other builds said the bottom did not fall on a panel line (one even had pics of the real thing).  So off I went sanding and filling, all while trying to preserve other panel lines around it.  Then it was time to add the cannon blisters.  The kit versions were reported to have inaccurate representations of the rubber seal, so I was provided the Barracuda resin set as replacements.  I had a terrible time getting the starboard side to fit flush and the port side was chipped at the seal.  On the later I ended using the kit blister then I added a strip of .10 styrene to represent the seal.  I was not impressed with the Barracuda set at all.

The top wings came in two parts.  This area was where I read there were alot of fit issues.  Surprisingly I had no trouble here.  I just filled the panel line (more like trench) and rescribed the panel line back in at an appropriate width.  Then I had issues with the wings meeting the wing roots.  They just wouldn't touch, especially on the starboard side.  I ended up having to use putty there.  The supercharger intake was replaced with the correct Quickboost example too.  A little putty at the joint.  No big whoop...

I do like how all the control surfaces and flaps are all poseable, even the radiators.  A nice touch.  I posed everything!

I think the worst is over.  Soon I'll dust it with primer, check the seams, rescribe missing lines, then start the fun part........painting German schemes!......

I wouldn't worry.  In  your case the bigger scale just makes for a greater appreciation of your work.

It might not come cheap, but it looks every bit worth it and more.  You've definitely got cockpits down to a science friend...at any scale.  Very nice. =]

Very cool. I've heard nothing but good things about this kit. I may have to add one to the stash. Super nice cockpit, Joe.

Very cool, I'll be following along. I think I may have to get one of these kits, the new RoG 1/32 kits are really nice.

Wow, I got to see my cockpit mentor's first resin 1/32nd cockpit! Pretty cool.

Looking forward to following along. A 109 in 1/32nd does sound irresistable.

Odd you'd mention your apprehension of 1/32. I've had the same thing and have yet to tackle one of mine, which is most odd because I built them back in the old days. Confused

Very nice indeedy! I've built the "R of G" 1/32 G-10 Gustav and really enjoyed it, and since building it, have been contemplating adding this one to my collection. I will watch with much interest.

Have fun with the rest of your build!

Cheers Smile

Lawdog, that is a great kit! I am currently in the final stages of finishing up my version of that aircraft, adding the small fiddly bits to it and some weathering. I really enjoyed this build, it was my first 109 I'd ever done and I have to admit I like the way it turned out. I built mine straight OOB, except for the decals, for those I ordered a set from Eaglecals for Erich Hartmans mount. Looking great so far, cant wait to see the finished project!

On the Bench:  Lots of unfinished projects!  Smile

1/32nd Revell Messerschmitt Bf-109 G-6 (Finished)
Posted by lawdog114 on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 3:28 AM

Although I've tried to resist, it was bound to happen eventually. I finally decided to step out of my comfort zone and have a go at a 1/32nd scale kit.  This scale has always intimidated me for some reason, eventhough I have several in the stash.  Perhaps it's because everything is bigger, so screw ups would be much more glaring, esssentially rendering my trickery useless.  Or maybe the fact that everything is bigger so more detail has to be added.  It's probably a little of both. So here I go with the fairly new release Revell Bf 109 G-6 with more goodies than you could shake a stick at.  Well at least it's a subject I enjoy to the fullest.......and an excuse to build a 109! (as if I needed one)  Please tag along....

Although the kit cockpit is fairly nice, I was provided along with the kit the Eduard Brassin cockpit set.  This thing is nothing short of gorgeous and even comes with a color PE set.  I'm not sure it's worth the $45 price tag, but thats my cheap a@@ opinion.

After I Dremeled all of the resin loose, which was fairly painless, I started adding the PE.  The multi-piece rudder pedals alone took me almost an hour to assemble and add to the floor.  The trim wheel(s) and gears were something else too.  Once done, I painted it all up in my normal fashion with Gunze RLM 66 over a flat black base.  I used the Bf-109 G walkaround book as a loose reference in this endeavor.  I figured in this scale, the little stuff mattered.  For those who would like to see how I do my cockpits, please go here...

or here...

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/161025.aspx

I still have to add the clear piece to the yellow fuel line and perhaps dust it with some more dull coat, then its time to work on the fuselage.
