You can go Tamiyausa.com site and find the Lancaster kit. Some have links for the manual guide that you can print out in English version. It can't be any different than the old one you have compared to the Lancaster kits of today.

Cool, this should be interesting, as you said a real classic kit there. And unlike an American heavy bomber the RAF painted their planes so no annoying NM finish. Plus those Eduard masks should make the masking much, much, easier.

The decals looks usable though I don't think I'd try using that plastic cement!

Hmm, considering the apparent age of the kit, it might be a good idea to get hold of some Microscale Liquid Decal Film (or something similar) as a precaution in case the decals break up when they hit the water.

Wow, nice old kit of a clasic bomber.

Yes, I noticed that there are no MNF allied bombers, at least I didn't find one.  That's interesting trivia Gamera!  Oh no, the styrene cement will not be utilized.  I did purchase some AM decals.  Thanks for the read and reply.

Beware of the engine nacelles to wing fit. I recall having to use quite a bit of filler on all four engines.

It is a very nice kit if you take your time and  don't mind raised panel lines

AND probably get a high-resolution scan of the sheets, just in case you have to print them on new film.  Good luck, should be fun!

Tohsi, I don't know my British bombers that well but the shot of the fuselage seems to me to have a lot of windows in it. I know the Brits made a airliner version of the Lancaster, could this kit represent that or does this version have that many windows? Tim

The fuselage windows were a feature of the early Lancs & were deleted in later production runs.

The last several days were beautiful!  The weather here is now sunny and at a cool 70 degrees.  This is a perfect scenario to go outside on the patio to AB a kit.  I've had the chance to primer the Lancaster.  Please see below for a progress report.

Toshi

There are so many windows, the Lancaster looks like a 747.  LOL!

Of all the planes I have painted, I think the Lancaster was by far the most fun.  Maybe it was the thought that black, instead of white or light gray, wasn't so intimidating.  Have fun Toshi.

I was in shock that the bottom half the Lancaster was painted black.  This will be an interesting challenge.  The only other kit I painted black was the P-61 Blackwidow and the SR-71.  Thanks for the visit!

To my fellow forum members,

Please excuse my ignorance, as I thought this is a cool bomber to build.  I had little next to no knowledge of this aircraft.  After reading about it, I must say that the Lancaster was one of the most important allied aircraft of all time.  I also found out that this is Tamiya's original first of the series, hence the Japanese instructions.

I also read that this kit was reissued with new molds.  This newer release comes with a painted canopy glass.  I thought that was a great idea.  They actually look great!

Well, I made very little progress yesterday and into the evening.  It took me that long to use the Eduard mask.  I must say, I had fun and it was exciting to see it's transition.  That's something no one can ever take away from me, unless Tamiya pre-paints the canopies.  LOL!  Here are the front and rear turret assembly.  Thank you so much in advance for visiting my Lancaster thread!

If I may add, I would like to reiterate that I am almost clueless of the Lancaster build.  It's like learning to ride a bike for the first time.  Thinking that since this is a Tamiya kit, everything about it would be perfection.  The only mistakes made would be on the behalf of the builder.

A few builds ago, I assembled a Monogram 1:48 B-24 Liberator.  Gaps on the liberator as well as seams, was exceptable in my humble opinion.  Of course like all hobbiest, putty and sanding would be the norm of the day.  Fast forward to the Lancaster build.

Being that this is a Tamiya produced kit, everything and I mean everything would fall into place.  Oh my!  That was incorrect.  I have to remember that this mold is probably 25+ years old, hence the technology that we take for granted is in all the new kits that are produced today.  I'm sure when this kit became available for the market, everyone was in awe.

The seams are equal to the Liberator kit.  At some places on the fuesalage, it was next to ridicules.  I'm not complaining, I'm just giving forum members a heads up if members choose to build this classic kit.  So far the front and rear turrets are on the Avro, next up, is the wings and engines.  I do know this much, I'm going to have to paint this kit in sections as it's a monster.

What I do like about this kit is that I get to see how Tamiya has grown over the years.  We now have the Tamiya signature 1:32 kits like the Corsair, Mustang, Zero, and the Spitfire.  I almost forgot to add the recent introduction of the 1:32 Mosquito.  Ultimately, I'm just taking my time and enjoying myself, isn't that what this hobby is all about?  I think so, no, I know so.

Thank you sir.  I almost purchased the Dambuster version as well but this kit was going for a good deal.  The only problem I've encountered was one or two mislabeled parts number.  Other than that, be prepared to sand the seams down.  You'll fall in love with this kit!  Thanks for the visit.

Here is yesterday's progress.  SubarooMike was correct in that certain Eduard masks were Askew. I did order AM decals. This should be good!  Due to the incorrect nature of the Eduard mask, I did approximately 50% by hand, the old school way.

To my fellow forum members,

What you can view below is the first base coat of Vallejo Flat Earth 70.983 on the fueselage.  I then free hand AB the camoflauge of which is Vallejo US Dark Green 70.893.

In order to protect the camoflauge, I purchased a product that I've never used of which is Testors Wet Look Clear #1834 one coat lacquer.  The clear coat is not only is a pre-prep for the decals but also for the entire bottom half of the Lancaster of which will be AB Vallejo Black 70.950.

As you can see in another photo, I am also putting together both wings which are huge monstrous.  Due to the size of this Lancaster kit, I need to AB this aircraft in sections.  This makes AB the Avro that much more user friendly. So far, I have yet to come across any issues and or concerns regarding the assembly process.  I hope I can continue in this fashion for the rest of the build.

Once again, I'd like to thank you all in advance for supporting my builds And leaving comments as well.

Hi Toshi,

All the masking pays off.  Your build brings back fond memories when I painted mine.  Hope you are enjoying the build. The cammo pattern looks spot on.   It will look great when you do your weather washes to tone down and blend the green and brown.

Cheers,

Scott

Yes, the canopy masking really paid off.  It was tedious at best, but the more I do it, the better I get.  Not only am I enjoying myself with this Lancaster build but, I'm so excited to see how all this will pull together.

You are correct that when I add a wash, the colors will actually tone down but blend into each other much better.  As for today's work, I'll be working on the landing gears and prepping for the AB of the black.  Thank you so much sir for your support in my projects.  I am most honored!

Mr. Jay Jay, thank you so much for the compliments.  I greatly appreciate your support in my builds.  I only recently felt that I have enough confidence in myself to be able to free hand the coamofluage.  In this case, it's the Avro Lancaster.

Here is Saturday's progress report.  As I described above, the Lancaster fueselage is prepared for the black coat.  I'll also seal the flat black in with Testors clear coat.  While this dries and cures, I'll be working on the front landing gears.  More up dates to follow.

What a great day to be alive.  I've always said any day I can wake up is always a good day.  I just started my continuation of my build at 12:00 noon, just as I started, a classic movie started.  I'm sure everyone knows of the Academy Award Winning Movie called Patton with George C. Scott.  After this movie, another one of my favorite shows will be playing, A Bridge Too Far.  I saw this movie when I was 12 years old.  At nineteen, I would have never imagined that I would be touring these battle fields as a Jazz Artist.  How life can hand you a new direction at every turn.

Thats one thing I teach my children; "Always take the oppurtunity when the door opens, it might never open for you again.  It's a once in a life time scenario, do it while you're young and have the time".  I think that's the key.  Enough of my Toshi philosophy, below is my progress thus far, I hope you enjoy enjoy the photos as much as I had building and painting the Avro Lancaster.  Just a quick note, I've never painted the underside of an aircraft black.  It just feels weird.  LOL!

That's looking really nice Toshi, great paint job. It is a bit of a surreal feeling being places with a historical significance.

Thank you Mr. silentbob33!  Yes it is a surreal situation being in an area of historical significance.  Some of my most memorable moments were the nuclear explosion at Chernobyl (That was scary), Hadrians Wall in England, Ann Frank Hause, The fall of the Berlin Wall, performing at the very first Live Aid, visiting the many bridges of Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, visiting the many museums and churches throughout Europe, and seeing structures that are hundreds of years old!

There are so many other things and places I can go on about, I just don't have the room nor time to do so.  When my children were young and had tests in history class, I would tell them that I've lived in all those places and they would be in awe.

My fondest memory was when I lived in Amsterdam and my girlfriend and I would visit her parents in Eindenhoven.  It was so beautiful there in the summer!  Then again, I sit here writing this on my iPad in NE Ohio, 35 minutes from Cleveland with my beautiful wife enjoying the wonderful sunny and warm spring weather is something I'm very thankful of.  Thank you sir, you've awaken some fond memories.  I thank you also for taking the time out and reading as well as replying on this thread.

With the size of this beast maybe you need a full on spray gun. lol.

Your camo looks great, Toshi.  The clear coat looks like it went on pretty well too. Decals should sit nicely now.

Looking great. Indeed Tamiya and Monogram were similar in kit design back in the day. Their Betty Bomber is supposed to be beautiful though, but that's a newer kit.

I know!  LOL!  What I have is 3 AB.  The main one that I use all the time is the Iwata NEO Gravity Feed.  My second go to AB is the Iwata NEO Gravity Feed Pistol Grip.  Both AB are 0.35 needles and nozzles.  They do great work as an all around detail and wide pattern AB.

I also have a Harbor Frieght Tools AB that's a siphon feed with a relatively larger needle and nozzle, this generic AB does a great job handling large coverage areas plus it has a decent size paint bottle to be able to AB with a wider pattern spray.  It's just that the clean up on the siphon AB is and can be difficult at best.  So I use laquer thinner to do a thouruogh job.

The clear coat I purchased was a first for me.  It's for car modelers that want that high shine wet look.  It looks really nice, it was an experiment in process for me.  I think it went well.  Allan, thank you so much for your support in my projects.  It's members like you can hat have allowed me to grow in this new and exciting hobby!

You know lawdog114, for the age of this kit, it sure held up well during these last several decades.  It definately shows that Tamiya was doing its job.  Thank you sir for your support and the offer to assist me in the building of this kit.  I very much appreciate it!

 To my fellow forum members,

Here I have finally applied successfully the base coat as well as the camoflauge onto the Avro Lancaster.  As you can see by the photographs, the wings are now attached.  I am working on the tail and will assemble the tail on the fueselage.  More photos to follow.

She's lookin' good Toshi. Glad to see your Tamiya paint stand was up to holding something this large!

I know what you mean about certain places. From strolling the battlefield at Gettysburg to battleships like the USS North Carolina and Wisconson it's that feeling you get. A few years ago touring the USS Yorktown I sat in the pilot's briefing room and tried to imagine what it must have been like to be a young kid back then prepping for a mission.

Very nice Toshi. The lines look great. I think I'd have to attach the wings to paint it though, I'd be too afraid I wouldn't be able to get them to line up properly.

Yes, so far the Tamiya paint stand has held it's own so far.  The only other large aircraft I have yet to build as well as utilizing the Tamiya stand to hold onto is the Monogram Superfortress and the Monogram Stratafortress!  LOL!

WOW!  Gettysburg, USS Carolina, and the Yorktown.  That's real history sir! Thank you for the read and reply as well as sharing such memories.

Thank you sir.  I used the attached photos and eyed it the best I could.  I was surprised that I got that close.  It's just too big to AB the Lancaster whole, half of it barely fits into my paint booth.  LOL!  Thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time out to read and reply on my thread!

Thank you 7474.  I still have the propellers, bombs, and the bomb bay to complete.  Once that's done, I can apply the decals.  Due to the age of the kit, I've had to outsource (After Market) the decals as the original decals are questionable at best.  Then I can weather the Lancaster and seal it with a dull coat.  There's still a great deal of work ahead.  I too would like to see it finished and I'm excited to do so.

I own a siphon feed AB from Harbor Freight Tools due to the fact that I purchased a AB compressor from HFT.  The AB came with the compressor.  Both have served my purpose without any issues and or concerns and continues to do so exquisitely!  Thank you sir for the read and reply!

I too hope they arrive soon.  When I purchased the first AM decal set, I ordered "Micky the Moocher".  Little did I know that the roundels were a separate sheet of decals.  So I had to order it, the seller sent it out today.  I expect to see it no later than the beginning of next week at the very latest.  Thank you for the read and reply.

Hi Toshi, Regret that I'm a bit late to the party but, I'm going to relish your fine Lancaster nonetheless. And with that said, excellent craftsmanship on that big beast. The all around work is exquisite and very nicely executed. I'm excited to see the finishing touches.

Concerning touring battlefields and museums, I've certainly visited my share of them. I've had the opportunity to visit nearly every Civil War battlefield from Richmond up to Gettysburg. Truly amazing experiences. But, Gettysburg was definitely different. I simply felt chilled and awed while walking it. Definitely a powerful and moving experience. Although Antietam was quite similar.

Yes, I didn't realize how much ordinance the Lancaster was capable of carrying.  It's amazing that it could even taxi down the runway let alone take flight!  LOL!

There's at least half a dozen sellers on eBay offering this very kit.  Check out eBay, you'll be pleasantly surprised in a good way on the cost of this classic kit!  Thank you sir for the read and reply!

Well you were right about it being in production still - however, the new version MSRPs at 163 bucks!  I wonder if the new version has recessed panel lines as I think the older kit has raised.  I'm going to take a look at eBay and tempt fate and an angry wife...

Just to put it in perspective, that single cylindrical bomb in the middle of the bay (a 4,000 pound "blockbuster" AKA "cookie") represents the equivalent typical bomb load (by weight) for a B-17 Flying Fortress. In addition, there are 18 500 pounders, making a total in this configuration, of 13,000 pounds.

Remember also that later versions (with a reconfigured bomb bay) could carry the massive 10-ton "Grand Slam".

I thought so, although at $163.00 that's high, really high.  I got mines on a bid I won for $70.00 including the shipping and handling.  The new releases should have recessed panel lines and from what I saw on a review is that the canopies come pre-painted.  My first generation kit has recessed and raised panel lines.  That's a very nice touch and they look very proffesionally done.  I can definately recommend this kit.

There is a dambuster version as well.  Oh yes, and one with a torpedo.  I would spend an extra $50.00 to $60.00 dollars and get the Big Ed set as the interior, although good could use a bit of finesse.

I've never built a British heavy bomber before so this is a first for me.  I choose the version where half the kit is painted a flat black as I've never done that before.  The only kits that I've painted flat black was a Monogram 1:48 P-61 Blackwidow and a SR-71.

This kit has half the undersides black with a camoflauge motif up on top.  At first I didn't know if I liked it or not, after a day with it, I think it's a very cool paint job and one of the most fun to do so.  Once again, thank you for the read and reply!

Thats some amazing trivia.  I can't believe that the Lancaster carried almost three times more ordinance than the B-17 Flying Fortress.   Thirteen thousand pounds is just amazing.  I just saw a special on the Military History Channel in which the Lancaster was featured.

That's one hell of a workhouse.  Thank you sir for sharing this important information on this historic bomber with fellow forum members and myself included.  Also thank you for the read and reply!

Oh, that 4000 pounds wasn't the maximum load of the B-17, it was a typical payload. I think the max theoretical load was up to about 17,000 pounds, but operationally, always remember that you have to trade payload for range. Wink

Thanks for the info Phil, I'd just assumed that the Lancaster, Fortress, and Liberator were pretty much in the same class. I had no idea Indifferent

I too thought that the Liberator, Flying Fortress, and the Lancaster were of equal in payload distribution.

To my fellow forum members,

I have been diligently and excitedly been tracking my Lancaster decals of the roundels.  Utilizing USPS tracking information, I can't wait for it to arrive!  I just found out some five minutes ago in that my decals are now in Kent, Ohio and are out in delivery mode.  That means I should have it in hand by 4:00pm today.  HURRAY!!!!

I'm also very anxiously been tracking my next build.  It's a GWH 1:48 P-61 Blackwidow.  This one is very special as it includes two extra decal sheets not including the GWH kit decals but also a Big Ed and a Eduard canopy masking set.  With this, the Blackwidow will be accompanied by a Squadron cowl and propeller set that comes with the propeller jig.

I did a budgeted forecast in that if buying each piece individually including the kit itself and came to an approximate cost of $215.00.  I purchased the GWH kit and all the AM parts mentioned above at half the price!  I think I got away with murder.  LOL!  Of course as usual, I'll have a WIP thread available once I start the GWH Blackwidow kit!

To my fellow forum members,

I just received the much needed decal roundels for my Avro Lancaster build.  You can bet that I immediately went to set up and install the final decals needed to complete this build.

As you can see below, everything has been completed except for two things.  Weathering and a spray of dullcoat to set the decals in and to get rid of the very high gloss on the Lancaster at this current time.  I'm going to allow the decals to set overnight and then I'll seal the Lancaster paint job in.  Thank you forum members for everything you've done for me.

Toshi, I am endlessly amazed by the quality and speed you can build models.  The Lancaster is a beaut!.  I actually got to crawl through one last summer at Osh Kosh.  I do mean crawl, getting over the wing spar was a challenge.    Talking about the B-17, it would typically carry between 4000-8000 pounds of bombs, depending on how far it had to fly.  As I recall, a typical mission into Germany would be closer to 4000 pounds, or 8X 500 bombs.  One of the issues with the B-17 was the size of its bomb bay.  It could probably lift heavier loads, but you couldn't squeeze them in.  As such, with its broad wing, the B-17 could fly higher and that made it safer than the B-24, which just couldn't climb as high.  THe B-24 could carry a larger load over more distance, though.

To My fellow forum members,

I can never forget how all of you wonderful forum members that logged on to my very first post of which was a Monogram 1:48 P-61 Blackwidow.  All I got was how well I was building my first kit after an absence of forty years.  With this build, I continue to receive assistance and praise of my builds.  You all just don't know how much this affects me.  Between doctors visit and physical therapy, modeling has become my escape as well as therapy in fine motor skills in assembling of a model kit.

For this simple gesture, no amount of medication drives me to be a better modeler and or a better human being.  I want to thank you all for everything, each day I wake up in excitement of being at the bench creating my next build.  Before this, I had absolutely nothing to live for.

This Lancaster had to be placed as a unfinished project as I did not receive my roundels.  I finally received my decals via USPS at 4:00pm yesterday.  I immediately started to decal the Lancaster.  Once done, I waited one day (24 hrs.) for the decals to set, then I sprayed the kit with a flat coat followed by a enamel wash.  Here is my finale of the Avro Lancaster.  Again, thank you in advance for your support in my projects.

She looks good to me Toshi. The canopy masks seem to have worked well.

I have the newer Hasegawa 1/72nd kit, I really need to get around to building it someday.

Another very well done build.  I can't believe just how far you have come in a year. (Hat off and deep bow)

If you like the camo/black scheme, think about a B-52D during Vietnam.  they had the SEA 3 color camo tops and black bottoms.  You would not believe what they carried internally as well as inboard pylon loads of 500/750 pounders.........

Just splendid Toshi!

I just don't know how you find the time and the stamina to complete your aircraft kits so quickly - but don't stop! It's such a treat to see anyone's WIP and I can always count on you to have at least one going.

I'm debating what aircraft to build next since I'm a little stymied with a simple old Lindberg ship kit that I want to make look good. It may be beyond my scope so I'll just try another a/c kit - preferably something that hasn't been posted here lately - perhaps the Fairey Swordfish?

Thank you harp.ta.  I tried to get as close as possible in reference to the camoflauge.  I actually messed up on the left wing, I had to reshoot that left wing.

On this build, although I was in physical pain, mentally, I was 100%.  That's one of the ways I'm able to complete kits so fast.  Before my accident, I was a go and go and get it done person.  Very motivated!

I'ts when my mental stability goes south.  Thats when Mrs. Toshi steps in to get me to bed.  I become incoherent.  I don't recall anything I've done during these episodes.  My bench time will cease and desists.

As far a a kit to build that is unique, the Fairey Swordfish sounds like a great idea.  I'm like you, I enjoy building kits that most modelers feel that it's a kit they would not like to build.  This is my humble opinion.  I'll be finishing up the F4U-1 Corsair today.  Then you'll be surprised by my next build.  Thank you for your support!
