To my fellow forum members,

As you may all know by now, I sprayed the 104 with MM Enamel Chrome Silver.  The chrome silver enamel takes forever to cure.  So I'll be starting another thread. Once the 104 cures, I'll restart this thread.  Thank you for your support.  By the way, the next thread will be a F-22 Raptor by Revell.

Nice work Toshi.  In the spirit of helping you create a pretty accurate CF-104, there are a few things, paint wise, that you might want to do.  First off, NMF CF-104's in Cold Lake, Alberta were painted differently than those based in Europe.  Cold Lake CF-104's were painted as depicted in the thread below.  NMF CF-104's in Europe had Gloss White wings and horizontal stabilizers (top), aluminum wing tanks and the undersides of the wings and horizontal stabilizer and the bottom part of the radome was grey (Model Master Gloss Aircraft Grey) is almost an exact match.  Here's a link to a Cold Lake two seater that I put together for a group build over on ARC.  I'm not doing this for accolades.  It's easier for me to explain with photos.

http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=274686&st=0

From post #36 on, you can see the colours I used to get the tone variations on the back end and the colours I used for the wings, tail, tanks, radome, etc.  Masking can be a bit of a pain but the results are well worth the effort.

As I said, nothing more than a helping hand.  Continued success with your build.

Wow, you did a fantastic job on your build!  Absolutely supreme.  I am honored that you have shared your build with me and other forum members in regards to your F-104.

Your photos will be of great assistance as a reference for my Starfighter!  Thank you so very much for your help, it's greatly appreciated.

Lol, I know you want to keep moving on this but good idea on letting her wait for the paint to be good and dry. Just don't let the model wait so long you have to wash the dust off like I do... Wink

Oh no, on Tuesday I'll pick up a couple of cans Testors clear gloss to seal the NMF.  I'll restart the thread then.  LOL!  Thanks for the laugh Gamera.

To my fellow forum members,

This is how far I got with the Starfighter.  I had real problems with this build.  Actually more so with the paints.  I had the F-104 primed, sanded, and had MM enamel chrome silver applied with an AB.  I sealed it with clear gloss after allowing the NMF cure for a week.  When it came time to mask the Starfighter, disaster struck!

I used Tamiya and Frog tape, both tapes pulled off the NMF up to the primer!  I literally freaked out and became very upset.  I couldn't understand what was going on.  How was I going to fix this?  I wet sanded the F-104, then I hand painted the NMF on.  What you see below is my handi-work.  I'm very pleased with the outcome.

I'm very happy to say that I had practiced hand brushing with the last build of which was the Zoukei Mura Kyushu Shinden.  I was weary to do so at first but once I got started, everything fell into place for the Shinden build.  I was hesitant to hand brush the MM enamel chrome silver.  As you can see below, it turned out well, at least to my humble opinion.  Thank you forum members for visiting this build!

Thank you sir!  LOL!  I did loose my mind and had an out of body experience.  LOL!  I was very upset with the whole issue.  I just wished that it could come out on the first try.  I'm just glad that it finally got resolved.  I'm still trying to find out what happened!  At the minimum, I definately won't loose any sleep on this.  LOL!  Thank you for the read and reply!

Thank you my friend!  As upsetting as this whole situation had erupted on my build, I actually truly enjoyed hand painting the F-104.  I'm still not out of the woods yet.  I still want to seal the MM enamel chrome silver so as to protect the finish.  Then place the decals on and install the landing gear doors as well as the other doors like the air brakes and the ammunition panel.  Thank you for following my threads, I'm most honored.

WOW. Too bad about the tape problem. Whenever I use tape, whether it is the blue tape or Tamiya tape, I always first press it on my work surface a few times to remove some of the stickyness. By doing this I have never had tape pull off paint.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Thank you for the tip!  I'll remember to do that the next time I'm going to do a paint session with mask, Tamiya and or other.

Thanks Bakster!  As I wrote previously, there was a major issue with  the paint peeling off with the Tamiya and frog tape.  I only was able to save this build by hand brushing the F-104.  I'm going to let the MM chrome silver sit and cure for a couple of days.  Until then I'll be working on my other build/thread, the F-22 Raptor.  Thanks for the visit.

Very nice save to an unfortunate issue Toshi.  She's really starting to look like a Cold Lake Starfighter.  Good show.

The long fin on the wing tank that orients toward the fuselage; make sure the angle of it is the same as the trailing edge of the wing.  It's the same for all Starfighters.

I'm not sure what the kit decals are like (thick, won't conform, brittle, etc).  I used aftermarket decals on mine.  If you do have issues with the kit decals, try to find a set of Leading Edge Models or Belcher Bits CF-104 decals.  Both are very nice and there are Cold Lake decals on each.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Gamera!  This paint job was very frustrating, especially after I let the MM chrome silver cure for a week.  I did not expect it to come off with the tape, then again my dad always said; "Expect the un-expected".  LOL!

Here is (Finally, after the paint issues) the completed F-104G Starfighter.  If it weren't for my paint mistakes, I feel that this kit is a very decent Revell model.  One mistake I found was that one of the red stripes by the tail section, was numbered 1.  It should have been number 21.  Other than that, the F-104G went together relatively smooth.  Some very minor putty work, some sanding, and with a little adjustments, this is a fine kit.
