Here is the current progress of the Raptor.  I'm still trying to figure out the paint scheme.  It seems to me that there will be several areas that will need masking with a minimum of three to four different shades of gray.  This will be interesting!  LOL!  My next step is to assemble the air intakes and then assemble the fueselage.  Thank you for stopping by.

Bish,

Its not a clear produc, but yes, it adds a metallic hue to the paint. I used Gunze's Super Metallic SM03 (Super Iron) and SM04 (Super Stainless) and, per Hasegawa instructions, added one or the other 50-50 with the gray callouts to give the finish a metallic sheen. These paints are similar to, say, Model Master Metallizer paints. I used these as I use Gunze lacquers almost exclusively on my builds.

I was initially concerned that the 50-50 Metallizer mix would be too much but it turned out well for my taste. The metallic finish was also subdued a bit after the clear coat.

Just for info, here are the Hasegawa color mix recommendations for the FA-22:

H314 (50%) + H334 (50%) light gray lining

H315 (50%) + SM04 (50%) light gray base

H317 (50%) + SM03 (50%) dark gray

hope this helps

Nice! I finished the exact same kit in January.

In addition to what Bish said, be careful with the paint itself. FA-22s have metallic-looking paint.  I followed the Hasegawa (or was it Fujimi?) color callouts and added Metallizers to the paint. It did give a pretty satisfying metallic finish, though.

Toshi, sorry to butt in here, but i am curious about this as i would like the right effect when i do mine.

allan, when you say you added Metallizers, is that a clear product to give a metallic look to the paint your useing or a metalic version of the colour callouts.

No apology needed.  This thread is for everyone.  We all learn from each other.

Yeah Tosh,MM silver enamel is shiny but takes a long time to cure! The Raptor looks great and you are making rapid progress on it!

Yes, it looks nice, it's just the post dry time is longer than I expected.  LOL.  Thank you for your comments on the Raptor.  This will be my first modern stealth jet.

Did you come across any kind of issues?  Was this a straight forward build?  Thank you for the tip, I'll definately be looking into that.  Thanks Allan!

Cool subject Toshi. I didn't know Revell made an F-22

Yes, after opening the Raptor box, I really liked the lines of this jet.  It does have the cool factor.  I've seen this kit at Hobby Lobby for awhile.  If it weren't for Mrs. Toshi, I would not be building this kit.  You know me and propeller aircrafts! LOL!  Thanks for the visit.

No worries. You want somthing that does not give you a hard edge but that will give you the curves of the scheme.

Off to a nice start. Just an idea for the paint scheme. Freehanding at this scale can be tricky. The soft edge can look very out of scale. you might want to consider some sort of putty as a mask. A lot of guys over there use silly puty. I myself use white tac.

Hmm, I never thought of the difficulty of AB camoflauge in 1:72 freehand.  See, I'm really clueless when it comes to 1:72!  LOL!  I've never used putty, Silly Putty, Blue Tac, White Tac, or other types of putty masking.  I think I used index card stock once, but that was it.

The idea of some type of putty mask sounds intriguing.  Thanks for the tip Bish, I can always count on you.

Here is my first progress report for this build.  The second photo is only a dry fit for the cockpit.

Gamera

Cool Toshi! And 1/72nd, I thought she looked a tad smaller.

Those are some great photos there Bakster!

And great choice there on Langley. We get F-15s flying over every now and then and I assume they're out of Langley. I have yet to see a F-22 though.

This will be kit number three in 1:72.  It's going to be a challenging kit for me to build.  I'll do my best.

I'm for Langley "FF" as I retired from the USAF there and was getting my hand on working the F-22 and if the tail numbers are correct, I touched that jet.  But that is my $0.02, you are the modeler, your choice. Wink

Kevin

Sir, thank you very much for your service.  In honor of you, I will build the Langley FF!  What was the tail number?  I have four different tail numbers to choose from.  Please let me know.  They are as follows per my build sheet.

04067

05094

03047

03061

Toshi,

I see the tail markings for Tyndal, Alaska and Langley. What is your choice or is it to early?

Kevin

Thank you very much for asking, it's never too early to ask that question.  Do you have a preference, and why?  The reason I ask is that I'm fairly new to building jets.  I build a lot of WWII aircraft.  I currently have yet to choose what markings to utilize.  Maybe you can help me With some suggestions.

Currently, I'm much more concerned with the paint scheme.  I've never seen camoflauge like the Raptors before.  It's very cool and subtle!  I want to do it freehand, if a can.  LOL!  My other concern is the scale.  I've only built two other 1/72 kits, a SR-71 and a Twin Mustang.  This kit is much more complex than the two mentioned, not to exclude the paint scheme On the Raptor is much more complex.  Thank you for that question, you've peaked my interest!

Toshi, your are welcome. Let me know if you need closer detail with any of these. I have these same images in higher resolution than what I posted, and they can be magnified a lot.

Good luck with your build and I will be enjoying seeing it all come together.

Ok that sounds good.  It was a long day at the airshow and when I decided to call it at about 5:30. I had just about got to my car when this gem emerged.

Whoops.  This time with the images.
