Don, the only effort needed to change it is to wait a week or two and get the DC-4 kit that Revell Germany is releasing.

I didn't know that ROG is releasing a DC-4 kit that soon.  Well now, Mr. Stauffer will be pleased to know this!

Toshi

You bet- that is great!  I also intend to pick up the 1:72 Heller DC-6 kit.  I have seen a couple of great builds of that at contests.  But I think of Heller aircraft kits as major projects.  I have found RoG kits to be great to build, so will go for that first.

Other than decals, what other changes must be made to a C-54 to change it into a DC-4?  I would expect there would be some changes to the door- anything else?

Mr. Stauffer, don't quote me on this but several of the reviews concluded that one of the main floor pieces was a two way piece.  On one side, there are holes for the military jump seats.  On the other side there are holes for airliner seats.  There is also a rear area that is empty, the reviewers concluded that these will be bathrooms.  Certain doors are embedded from the inside.  These doors look like airliner doors.

Another interesting fact is that if you carefully look at one of the spruces above, there are three sets of wheels.  My guess is that one of those will be used for your DC-4.  Also, there's closer to 400 pieces and not 352.  This tells me that these extra pieces will be needed for your DC-4 as well.  The reviewers have all concluded that another type of DC aircraft could be in production at anytime.  I hope I answered your questions.  Oh, I forgot, there are two types of noses for the C-54D.  I haven't even looked at that yet so I can't tell you what's it for, sorry!

Toshi

So your telling me that if I keep the rear door closed it becomes a civilian airliner? I only say that because i can get the c-54d at hobby lobby for 40% off  and I have no idea if they are going to carry the dc-4 version.

John, you would also get the seats for the airliner with the new kit.  The shape of the airline door is not the same as the small front door of the two part C-54 cargo doors so a fair bit of work would be due there.  Maybe you could order a new fuselage half and door from RG.

I suppose that could be an option,   maybe Hobby Lobby will carry it and solve the issue.  Surprise

It's not like I'm going to run out and get it today,    waiting to see if it comes at christmas!

Well, I'm very very happy for every FSM Forum member here that are interested in a DC-4.  That's what a forum community is for.  A healthy and constructive conversation in regards to each other builds!

Currently, I've been meticulously working on the cockpit this evening.  It's a tough one with so many little parts that it needs the TLC that is required on this build.  Check it out for yourselves.  Thank you forum members, with out your visits, I could not have progress!

One aspect between the C-54D and the DC-4 kits are the seats.  ROG creatively placed the military jump seats on one side then if you turn the piece over, you can clearly see that the other side is for civilian seats as the photo here shows.

Respectfully, I'm no reviewer.  I got this information via several reviews from the Internet.  I'm just humbly passing this information on to fellow FSM Forum members.  Thank you for visiting my threads!

Looking really good there.  I picked one up at Hobby Lobby when they first came out.  Opened it to check it out, then put it in the stash for now. Need to do more building and less buying

Here's a tidbit that maybe all members know about the DC-4. In Alaska a fuel delivery service still flies them, as well as the C-46, called the Curtiss Commando, quite a performer back when they were flying them over the "hump" on supply runs.

I think the name of the service might be Nenana Fuel, they have huge onboard tanks for delivering fuel supplies to remote Alaska locations. I think it's remarkable that an aircraft that old, can still be doing rough duties like that. Rugged buggers they are.

Even the modern jets don't hang around that long, about 30 years and 60,000 flight hours will make them candidates for the scrap heap. But they are a different sort, the complexity of the systems renders them not cost effective for major rebuild, best to make soup cans from them and just buy new airplanes.

And to me, the DC-4-6-7 propeller driven airliners just "looked right."

I wanted to add Patrick206, I can't believe that after some seventy plus years that these aircrafts are still flying around.  That's just amazing!

Thank you Modelrob.  Your vigilance in my products are very noteworthy and I extremely appreciate that.  I still need to touch up the cockpit and weather the platform that you see (The long gray piece) when that's done I hope that this mix of bulkheads turns into some semblance of an aircraft!  LOL!

It's 4:20pm and I only now got started with the C-54D kit?  Am I sick or something?  LOL!

I just had a bunch of things to do, so here goes, another bulkhead.

Hey Toshi,

I don't know if you have Netflix, but the first two seasons of "Ice Pilots" is offered.  Lots of exposure to both the inside and exterior of DC-4s.

I never built the Revell Visible B-17, but it looks like this kit has so much detail it would be nice to show it as a cut away.

Love watching this build log.

I do have Netflix.  I'll definitely tune into that as that can be great reference material plus, it'll be great to see one of these dinosaurs fly.  LOL!

I built a Visible B-17G and did a complete interior Eduard PE set.  Check it out on a thread I did via the search tab.  I think it was in 2015.

I think a cutaway would be an awesome idea!

Thanks for the Netflix info and the heads up on the B-17G.  Also thank you for the visit!

Here's what was done yesterday, not much to show and you can barely see it.  But a lot of detail painting and assembly went into it.  So far, this kit is going together really good with no issues nor concerns.  Fit and finish is just perfect!  I'm really enjoying building this kit!

As you can see by the diagram, my next step is to AB the seats and glue them into place.  This looks like an all day process if I'll even get to it as my grandson is coming to visit and staying for dinner!  Thank you forum members for your support!

Doesn't a Ford Trimotor still serve Put-in-bay island in Lake Erie?  And I saw an article about a year ago about DC-3s still in revenue service.
