Completed 3/26/17 Trumpeter 1/32 P-38-5-LO Lightning
Posted by Toshi on Sunday, January 29, 2017 4:31 AM

To my fellow forum members,

Originally, Mrs. Toshi was going to sell this kit on Ebay.  You see, I ended up purchasing this kit for a ridiculously low cost.  How much you ask?  $52.00 including S&H.  This kit retails at $120.00 but I've seen it on eBay for around the $100.00 amount.  Give or take a few dollars.  Instead, Mrs. Toshi told me to go ahead and keep it in my stash for me to build.  You gotta love Mrs. Toshi.  Don't worry, I already took care of Mrs. Toshi with her Valentine's gift.  She'll love it!  And it's a huge surprise for her.

For some strange reason, she is infatuated with something called Tsum Tsum's.  She has a few but not the special edition Stitch collectors case.  Stitch is from a Disney movie called Lilo and stitch.  Hey, don't laugh, anything for Mrs. Toshi!  LOL!

This will be the biggest P-38 Lightning I've ever built.  I've done the Monogram/Revell 1/48 P-38 Lightning and my most recent build with AM Eduard Brassin PE set Academy 1/48 P-38 Lightning.  Unlike that build, I'll be doing this kit as a OOB build.

In it's usual set up, Trumpeter sets there kit and box up like a high end Tamiya 1/32 kit.  They are still not quite there yet but they are giving Tamiya a run for their money.  All the spruces are in stapled plastic bags with a side insert box filled with special styrene/rubber pieces and PE.  I just love these 1/32 kits.  They always come with extra goodies.  It's like a kid on Halloween night getting all that candy.

Within the kit box, you will find, a total of 362 pieces in 19 sprue, 3 rubber tires, PE for the aileron flap hinges, and metal pins for for the aileron shafts.  This is the same type of set up that Tamiya uses.  Other than what I have written, I know pictures will tell a thousand words.

Thank you fellow forum members for always supporting and visiting my WIP threads.  Keep em' comming, all the comments good and or bad.  I can only learn from this.

The rest of the sprue are doubles so I will not include them in the photos as that will just be redundant.

It is a very fun looking build as I've never assembled a WWII fighter plane this big.  It's crazy!  LOL!  Yes, those are rubber tires.  I'm going to use them as everything in this build is OOB.  Thank's for the visit!

This will be an exciting thread for me to watch. I'm hooked on your building P-38's Smile.

If you're not going to hang this kit vertically on your wall, won't you need a LOT of nose weight to prevent it from being a tail sitter?

All of this building of P-38's started as an accident in purchasing these products via eBay.  Mrs. Toshi purchased the Trumpeter P-38 Lighning first in November of 2016.  It was for her to sell back on eBay.  I wanted to build a P-38 hence I purchased the Academy Lightning with the Eduard Brassin set.  In the end, the Trumpeter Lightning just sat in our walk-in closet.  Due to the holiday madness, it was forgotten until now.  Mrs. Toshi gave it to me as a early Valentines present.  I'm Extremely happy and pleased to receive such a gift even this early.  LOL!

As for the nose weight, there will be none.  I am going to do some panel cuttings as the engine that is extremely detailed cannot be seen.  This is a common factor in the modeling world.  So it's up to me to cut out panels to view the engine and the armament area of which is also extremely detailed. So you see, there is no room for nose weights nor any kind of weights.  The only options I see is to

1) Do a diorama and tie the front landing gear to the bottom of the base.

2) Utilize some stretched clear spruce and place it on the tail like a stick to act like a leg.

3) Hang it on my wall.

Number three will be my chosen option, I already have a space dedicated to the P-38 Lightning.  In the future, when I get to a level of modeling like you and my fellow forum members, I will definately attempt to build a diorama with this giant beast of a fighter plane!  LOL!  Thank you Greg, for everything you have done for me!

Thank you my friend for watching my threads.  I so greatly appreciate this and am most humbled.  I'll do my best in making sure I can build this P-38 Lightning to yours and forum members standards.

Thank you!

I'm sure you know this, but if not, be sure to coat the plastic wheel sections with something, a clear coat, to protect against the rubber before you install the tires.  There have been cases of rubber tires actually eating the plastic, I believe it was ATM/Ertl's F7F Tigercat kits that were notorious for this.

Yes the old AMT Tigercat tires are notorious for eating the plastic after a while. I have resin replacements for my F7 and suggest the same for the Trumpy tires. The weighted ones look specially extra sharp.

You got that kit for an excellent price, what a great deal!

Yes, I've heard of this issue as well and will coat the tires accordingly.  Thank you for the heads up!
