1/72 Red Star Models Mikoyan Gurevich MiG 3 (Completed Pg. 2)

Thank you, Bish. I did burn through this one in just under a week with a scratch built canopy lol. That is a small accomplishment in itself. 

But c'mon, I could've done better if I'd taken more time with it. Oh, and I found that missing acetate sheet I WAS planning to use for the canopy. If I had taken more time to do a better job on this one the canopy would have looked better I think because I would have found the proper meterial to make it so.

Well.... I would be happier with it now anyways lol.

I hold myself to a fairly high standard. Higher than I probably should, but that's because I believe professionalism is an attitude, a mindset, that transcends just having good skills. I have a good set of skills, so I push myself to be better. Don't we all? There are still a lot of you guys here that I want to emulate because you build such beautiful models that seriously blow my mind. And I want to be that good too.

That's why I help the new guys out so much, because I was there myself not very long ago. Its nice when someone says "I wish I could do that!" Because I'm thinking, dude, you totally can! Let me show you how! :)

I love this place for that attitude because its infectous here and its like we are all on the same ladder shouting down to the guys down at the bottom saying, " give me your hand, we can do this together." 

Oops, I've deviated off target here lol.

I push myself hard, Bish, and I'm just as hard on myself if things don't meet expected criteria. We all seem to be like that to one degree or another, right? :)

We all, will always be our own worst critics. So maybe I'm being overly critical. Okay. Forgive me. Lol

Thank you, guys! Now that I've had a couple of days away from it, I don't think it looks too bad. That LaGG 3 kit will probably look better since I won't be scratch building a canopy for that one. 

And gee, Max, I don't know why that picture would remind you of me lol.  Nice one.  :)

Hey Mike,

Good job on this kit.  The canopy came out well, the colors make the model pop, and the weathering is just right.  Plus, you hand painted the stars, and they look perfect.  There is a lot to proud of on this kit.

Nice looking aircraft.  Seems to be all engine.

Making canopies is not only possible, but there is an easier way to do it than I did lol?

Very nicely done, Mike. Considering the clear bits were missing and you had to scratch them, you not only saved it from the bin, you turned out a really good build. I see the finished product as even better than one that came with all of the bits, since you had such obstacles in the way.

Thanks for the detailed posts and photos, I'm sure you passed along valuable info to others. Me for one, I had no idea making your own canopy was possible.

I very nearly dumped it in the bin before I started the effects stage. I had a personal issue that tanked my enthusiasm, but then I had a visit from my little brother. All is well now and I'm quite pleased with the outcome of this build. 

But that canopy still bugs me. I KNOW I could've done that better. :)

Very nice Mike. Always thought the Mig 3 was a great looking airplane, and you've certainly done an excellent job with that kit

Alright here are the daylight pictures for the completion. Flaws and all. 

I can't help but feel I could've done better.

If I have to do this again I will be using your idea Pawel. The method I used took a lot of work for a mediocre result.

Your MiG is looking good! I understand your feelings about the canopy, but it's a nice save none the less!

I have even built my own vacu machine (http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/tools_techniques_and_reference_materials/f/23/p/151922/1627952.aspx) to be able to adress isssues like that, but even without a special machine you can form your own canopies, so please try it - as I have said before, it opens a whole new set of options.

Here are a couple of sneak peeks before I take some pictures outside tomorrow.

I don't think I'll make a canopy using this method again though. It's okay, but not that good. I think it's a bit distracting, but I can live with it.

If memory serves I believe I used Tamiya smoke and weathering kits when I dirtied mine up and I'm happy with it. Really doesn't matter in the end, I think you have a winner as it is.

Thanks Brandon. I was going to use some oils, but I don't seem to have them with me right now. I'll try some acrylics and Tamiya powders. 

Im not sure if this will end up how I picture it in the end, but I'll try.

seriously, that one looks super nice. It represents any winter Mig-3 you want it to. I was just looking mine over and I think your little guy is done better. I'm looking forward to seeing how you weather it up.
