Robert, despite your troubles it turned out great. You should be proud of that. I love your display case too. I really need to get one of those. .....and I never realized just how big the Lancaster was...wow!

 

Thanks Joe  Yep she’s a whopper. I think the Pe-2 I started would fit on one wing. But it’s still a baby compared to the B-29

Doesn't look bad in spite of your troubles. Incidentally, the Lancaster was not a passenger plane first. It was a redesign of the twin engined Manchester and was a bomber from the start. Either late war or immediately post war (I can't remember which) Avro built a civilianised version of the Lancaster which they named the Lancastrian for passenger service, and it was one of these which was involved in the crash which was mentioned in an earlier post

The P was on the nose so the ground crew could identify the plane from the front.  It was only after the war that the Lanc carried passengers other than incidentally like the flights at the end of the war where the ground crews got tours over the destruction in Europe.  However, all the little windows down the side are there because in the specification for the Manchester there was a requirement for that aircraft to carry passengers as an alternate use, though it was not utilized during the war with the Manchester or the Lancaster which was derived from the Manchester.  There was a postwar conversion called the Lancastrian that was a passenger aircraft.

Robert, these large aircraft are hard to bring to the finish line, and yours looks pretty good.  The dust is just some free weathering!  I am sure more of the Tamiya Lancasters would be built if it were not for we modelers fear of failure.

Doing a model this big would intimidate the hell out of me.  Despite the kits best efforts to frustrate you, you did a great job!  I really like being able to see the figures in the bird.  All that effort and perseverance paid off big!

I know many don’t like adding the figures to aircraft but I kinda like how the little dudes look especially the guy up front.  He was a right bugger to get him glued into place.  I don't have a paint booth big enough to accommodate the whole plane so I had to do it in sections. Which might explain why somethings came unglued. Big planes are not my favorite either but I’m kinda doing a home museum kinda thing. I have a 1/48 B-29 left and I have no idea where I’m gonna put that.  Big bomber row is filled up

 I lke what you've done so far . Now question . Have you ever heard of a Lanc flying for BOAC and known as " Stardust " ?

 Saw a T.V. program the other day ." Stardust " was a passenger version that disappeared 50 years ago or so in the Himalayas .

 Last Radio message  "SENDEC " .Old military code word , repeated three times . They found her in a mountain pass . She had flown right into the mountain .They figure the flight crew goofed and didn't know they were too low . Slammed into the mountain .

 A Rolls -Royce Merlin engine is what they found first . The glint of sun off the metal shroud from some shiny  part of the engine is what got their attention . 

 They figured she hit and got buried in the Avalanche that followed . How many modelers know that the " Lanc " was used for passenger service first ?

 

 

i have never heard that. Thank you for sharing. I know that many of the German bombers started out as “passenger” planes to skirt the treaty

Well like all of us, I envisioned what this finished model was going to look like and unfortunately, I apparently had way too high expectations. To me, either the model or I was cursed.  Multiple problems with fit issues...note do NOT glue the figures in before attaching the cockpit to the fuselage.  I had to amputate the poor pilot's arm and reposition to get the canopy to seat. Multiple breakages, and parts that just fell off multiple times...like the tail fins.  My biggest issue is the finish.  I had problems with a fresh can of dullcoat and I got splotches.  I used clear acrylic to smooth those out but the next morning it looked like I had sprayed the model with dust.  I blamed the acrylic for this until I started cleaning up my workspace this morning.  Our furnace occasionally blows out alot of dust and I usually keep the vent closed in that room. That night I opened it slightly because it was pretty cold in there.....lesson learned. I never was able to completely recover from that.  Had terrible problems with decals.  Most silvered, bubbled up after dullcoat or just chipped off. 20/20 I would recommend to paint the stripes and using stencils if possible. I didn't chip too much, as the pictures that I found of the princess really didn't show too much.  I don't know why Tamiya didn't provide the "P" decal. It's on in all the flying pictures.  I apologize to the poor tail gunner I had to amputate both feet to get the turret to fit properly. I did add some parts on the back turret..I think they are to funnel spent shell casings and I personalized the big bomb. My first picture typifies my experience with this model.  I was taking off the main cockpit canopy masks..my last step..when I noticed the wing felt funny.  It had come unglued and so nearly did I.

Thanks John I do have some errors on some things. I guess I should have studied the plane a bit more before I painted. I don’t think Tamiya’s scheme is %100 accurate.  I wanted to cut out the little vents underneath the engines but the slots are so small I don’t have a small enough pin drill. Decided that discretion is the better part of valor on that one
