Chad you have to thin it about 50/50 and shoot close to get a wet coat and then shoot the leveling thinner by itself which creates that gloss.

This.  I replied before I read them all....lol.

LD, So I tried that gloss combo on my Fw190 and it came out a little grainy. Didn't look near as great as yours.  Maybe it wasnt thin enough or perhaps I needed to lay down a few more coats.

Yeah, you probably need a few more coats or need to put it on a bit heavier. Don't forget to go back over it with straight thinner.  That's the trick.

That may be it. I had a ratio of 50% glass to 50% thinner but I was about 12 inches or so away as I didn't want to have any pooling. Next time I'll get in closer. Thanks!

Besides them looking great as usual I really like that gloss coat. I have yet to get a nice gloss coat with X-22 but I think I will get some of that thinner and give it a try.

Thanks Tick. The thinner is actually the key, especially when you go back over it with straight MLT thinner. It's like magic. It almost melts it. Great stuff.

I got that trick from watching doogstx on his web site. The leveling thinner is super.

Your paint and markings are just gorgeous.  Beer

I saw a modeler on YouTube test a bunch of different gloss coats and he liked this one the best. That's what prompted me to give it a shot.

Thanks PJ.

Quick update.  I fired down a few coats of X-22 Clear Gloss and Mr. Leveling thinner (50/50). Best clear coat ever.  Smooth as glass and hard as a rock.  Forget anything else.  I used Techmod for Gabby's plane, namely for the fuse letters, tail serials and the kill panels.  I was worried as Techmod tends to be very fragile and if your not careful they'll schrivel up on you, however, I used alot of water and had no trouble. Perhaps they have improved a little?

Schilling's Hairless Joe got Aeromaster decals.  The sheet was from 2001 but still performed perfectly.

I'll give myself props..........Big Smile

Time to start working in the fiddly stuff.

Looks fantastic so far!  On Gabby's jug, I noticed the Technod decals showed the "taped off" fuselage invasion stripe boarders too, but your masking effort looks infinitely better than the decals would have IMO. Congrats for your patience with all the masking but it looks fabulous. The camo looks great too.

Thanks Hoss.  I was pleased how they turned out.

Great build so far. What did you use for the RAF Green? I come back and look at your threads when I’m building something similar.

Thanks.  I used XF-81 RAF Green.  Looks perfect to my eye.

That is simply amazing how well the markings came out dog. I was thinking of painting my own Jap markings on a 1/32 Oscar I'm working on and thought about the work involved but after seeing your hair pulling tedius masking work, mine will be a walk in the park.

Both Jugs are looking EXTRA sweet and are a refreshing change of the usual NMF ones. Beer

Thanks PJ

I continue to plug along on these turkeys.  I'm starting to see Montex masks and Tamiya tape in my sleep.  I endeavored to paint on the stars and bars and invasion stripes.  I figured I'd add the stars and bars first.  First I sprayed down some XF-2 white and added Montex masks.

Next I mixed XF-8 Flat Blue with XF-1 Flat Black to come up with Insignia Blue. I sprayed this next.

I then switched exclusively (for the moment) to Gabby's Jug which would get full invasion stripes.  The fuselage stripes were unique and showed to have only the white stripes with black borders. Apparently they removed the black ones or never painted them in the first place. This photo kind of shows it, at least the "borders".

I started by spraying the whole area black.  Then I cut strips of Tamiya tape to outline where the white stripes will go.

Next White was sprayed.

I then sprayed more white on the wings and then taped off all of the areas to remain white.

I taped the flaps and gear doors in place so everything is consistent.

Next I fired down black which was then taped off (This work was also done to Schilling's Jug, but only the lowers).

My research showed that the 56th FG painted these with RAF stock in their day fighter scheme of Ocean Grey, RAF Green over Medium Sea Grey.  I had these in Tamiya paint.  I started with the underside Medium Sea Grey XF-83 and used XF-2 White to reverse base it.

Note: At this point both planes are painted at the same time as they share almost the same scheme.

Next I fired down the XF-82 Ocean Grey.  I reverse based this with white as well.

Next I got to the tedious process of adding the green striping/mottling.  I went in close with low pressure.  I found this challenging on both as reference pictures were hard to find, particularly the upper wing surfaces.  For Gabby's Jug I used the 1/32 Hasegawa P-47 profile in instructions (from my stash) and for Schilling's the limited pictures I could find on the net. In reality this is a crap shoot anyways and it was probably pretty random.  I also sprayed the rudders and cowl bands as appropriate. Overall I'm pleased.

Tape and masks removed (Schilling)

Gabreski unmasked.

I'm pretty happy with the fuselage stripes.

All together?

Time for some weathering then decals.  I hope I don't have to paint any invasions stripes for awhile....

I love it so far! I envy your build speed my friend. I have a Tamiya jug that needs built, in Kenneth Dahlberg's livery. I love your choices though too! Gabreski and Schilling are great personalities to go with great liveries.

Thanks B777. I did Dahlberg's skull and crossbones a few years ago. Great subject!
