Got started on my F84 with the pit. I have an Eduard pe set to add some additional details to this great looking kit that is good oob but the pe part and film instrument faces will look even better. I still have to cut off the molded foot pedals and replace them with the pe ones.
The pit tub was assembled and is ready for paint. The seat still needs the pe belts that will go on after paint is sprayed on.
have a decal sheet for colorful Thunderjets but for the E variant and my kit is a G. A little research revealed the main exterior differences are the vents on the fuselage doors and the inflight refueling door on the port inside wing on the G model and absent on the earlier E.
The kit offers both early and later reinforced canopies that appeared by late 1952. I want to use the markings of the 527th FBS, 86th FB based at Neubiberg, Germany 1952 that will require deleting the vents and refueling doors.
The Squadron book has lots of useful information.

I pooled Plast I Weld over the light refueling door pane lines which swells up the plastic over the panel lines creating a filler. After a few hours of curing the area is carefully sanded smooth with various grits of sanding pads eliminating the panel lines.
For the door vents I cut and fitted a piece of plastic sheet and pooled the Plast I Weld over the patch causing it to ment into the area and later can be easily sanded smooth when cured. I will be using Alclad and Xtreme Metal paints and don’t want to use any putty as filler.

Yes with both corrections it will look like an E. The rear deck has enough on it to look busy but I may add some wires and other junk.

Thanks. I love using Plast I Weld cause it melts the plastic into a solid join and pooling it will swell the plastic and hide defects.
Test fitting the rockets and got the 500 pounders and pylons together and ready to be cleaned up.

For some reason the clamped fuselage reminds me of Uncle Fester when he needed to clear his head in a head clamp.
Short update on my F84, ready for gloss black enamel then some Alclad paints for a nmf.
Got the clear parts masked. The upgraded canopy had reinforced tape which was an off white color, not silver as the main frame is so I have those masked and after spraying them will mask again to shoot the nmf for the main frame.
The rear canopy deck got some scratch built additions and pe parts to add more details
shot the black gloss enamel in preparation for the Alclad paints. Will let this one cure for a few days then polish up the paint to get a smooth aluminum finish.
A short update on my F84. Polished the gloss black and shot the Chrome Alclad. Man that thing is like a mirror and surface prep is a must. I went with the shinier chrome cause it has a lot of masking to come for the very colorful squadron colors and will be shooting Aquagloss to protect the finish and will probably dial down the shine a notch. Will also be masking panels to get different metallic shades.

Thanks guys. I took an old soft cotton t shirt and lightly polished the Alclad and actually made a tad shinier. From what videos I have seen the Aquagloss doesn't kill the metallic effect. Lots of masking to come.
I'm waiting for Gauzy shine enhancer to shoot over the Alclad to protect it from masking since is says it will not change the metallic tone. The masking is a bit more complicated for using post notes so just want to make sure the tape doesn't pull up the high shine paint.
I tested Aquagloss on a test piece and wasn't completely happy with the look.
Ohh this is really getting interesting! That Gauzy stuff sounds promising if it can really cover chrome type paints without losing shine. I ordered some myself today. Really exciting. Glad you shared that.

Well the Gauzy came in today and I shot it over the Alclad and I'm VERY happy to report no loss of metallic sheen. This stuff levels out like a champ leaving a glass smooth finish. I freaked out at first cause it was a bit gainy in a couple of spots but it just leveled out smooth. No pictures cause believe me, there is no difference in the metallic effect!
I will post some pictures once I shoot the yellow and white paint on the tanks and tail feathers.
Hi, Ernie - Your F-84 is looking outstanding, really good build quality and superb finish. That gloss NMF is perfect, and I'm glad the gloss protective coats didn't change the effect you had achieved with just the Alclad. It will be fun to see the completion of this one.

Thanks Patrick for dropping by. I will have more pictures as soon as I have shot some of the other colors.
Have been unable to work on this for a couple of days but finally shot the tanks yellow and white for the tail feathers, Both will have checker boards on them. I also picked out a few panels and shot them in very subtle contrasting shades. I still have to mask and shoot olive drab on the spine along with red.
Plasticjunkie, is that with the Gauzzy over the chrome paint? If so would you mind if i posted a pic over on LSP to show one of the guys there how it looks over Alclad?
