Thanks for the 411. I mostly spray enamels and lacquers, very rarely acrylics, so I'm excited to give the Sotar a try. Now, I just gotta build something...

OK, sorry to hijack your build thread with my airbrush detour. Looking forward to seeing more of your progress!

Thanks!

The Aim 9s,7s and jamming pod are done. Gave them a wash to pop some details.

Shot the rear bottom NMF area with different shades of Alclad to get a dirty look from the twin exhaust staining.

Looks great PJ

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

I did some digging and found pictures of this aircraft with the shark mouth when it was stationed in  Korat. Apparently the shark mouth was painted over once stationed at Andersen sometime in 1973.

On September 9, 1972 while flying an Iron Hand Mission as call sign “Eagle 3”, 392 shot down a MiG 19 using an Aim 7. A second kill was scored over a MiG 21 on October 15, 1972.

The Tamiya shark mouth has a pretty good fit on this Revell Phantom requiring minor red and black paint touch ups.

The decals are almost on but lots of small stencils are yet to be applied.

Tail numbers look great thanks to Solvaset.

I got to Udorn in August of '73, and all nose art and unofficial markings were gone at that time.  By the time I got there, Udorn and Ubon were phantom bases, and the thuds were at Korat and Takhli.  Eariler they were switched.

I seem to remember that the 119 ECM pod didn't have the very bottom short gondola under the front.  I dropped one off a jammer one day and ended up on top of it.  Shattered all 4 of the black radomes....10k each at the time, and scrambling a bunch of circuit cards in the long gondola.  The final bill was around 240K, IIRC.

The bottom bulge is a later mod to the 119 family.

Was an ECM tech, we had 71's, 101's, and the 119's, and got all of Ubon's 119's and equipment when they started to close out operations in '74.

Don't know if your a/c had the color flash on the top of the vertical stab or not.  Ours were by squadron (I think), red, white, green, blue, etc.

Ouch, $240K!! I’m sure you pissed off someone in the chain of command.  Thanks for the heads up on the 119, easy fix to make it the earlier type.

I haven’t found a picture of this aircraft with the color flash on the fin so I guess it never had it?

The early 119 looked like a late version of the 101.  The main section was 10" in diameter, the gondola was somewhere in the 7-8" area, and the same contour for the full length. (No squared off areas)

Yeah, that ended the transport of single pods on a jammer.  Had to use a truck and trailer that would hold 4 pods.  Happened on an active taxiway that we had clearance to use.  Took a couple hours to get everything cleaned up, and the FOD walk down done

Don't know if the other outfits used the flash or not, especially on the other bases.  I got there late in the game.

Should be okay if you're happy with it.  Any more and you'll lose markings.

Are you going to mount in a Sparrow bay on the belly, or an inboard pylon.  If a pylon, could only carry that, and no ordinance on that one.

Don't know on a mig cap bird, but would suspect on a pylon to keep all four of the sparrows.  Strike bird, probably in a missile bay

The kit comes with the 4 winders and 2 sparrows. Have to mount the pod on the left front sparrow bay.

Common spot for them.  Don't know if any of the other bays had the necessary wiring.  I worked mostly with the RF's.  Never came across one mounted underneath IIRC, just pylon. After I got back here it was more RF at Shaw till I got out.

You're doing a great job on the old Revell monster.  Haven't had that much ambition to tackle any of the three in the stash...E, G, and RF.

Thanks GH. I have seen them on the left inboard pylon like you said and the left Sparrow bay. This one has the attachment point for the Sparrow station.

PJ. That F4 is looking very nice, my dad bought me one in 75. The kit was huge! I've always enjoyed those Revell 1/32 jets form the mid 70's and all hand painted Bang Head well thats the way I was taught at the time. Well any way Yes.

Thanks crown. I believe this one is the new tooling one having recessed panel lines and better details than the earlier release. I have the G Wild Weasel one in the stash. It has some nice anti radiation missiles and great looking decals.

Really exceptional, Ernie -

It turned out beautifully, of your builds that I've seen it's my favorite. The weapons details are among the best ever, extremely fine work and appearance. Thanks for the post and photos.
