You beat me to the name "Hellion," dans1120. I thought of that one and was thinking the squadron marking would be the eagle-like bird on the cover of Judas Priest's "Screaming for Vengeance." Here's a few others, all inspired by the best kind of music in the world...heavy metal!
"Metallion"--I think that's the name given to the creature on the front of Judas Priest's "Defenders of the Faith" album that looks kind of like a cross between a dog and a tank spray-painted with Testor's "Colors by Boyd."
"Painkiller"--Yet another one inspired by a Judas Priest album cover--their "Painkiller" album depicts a knight on steroids riding a flying motorcycle with spinning saw blades for wheels. Below the motorcycle is a devastated landscape. (This would also be an excellent squadron marking.)
"Megadeth"--after Dave Mustaine's band.
"Ktulu"--after the Metallica song "The Call of Ktulu," their second best instrumental. ("Orion" is their best instrumental, but there's already a plane called that.)
"Eruption"--that blistering Eddie Van Halen guitar solo on that band's debut album.
"Creeping Death"--another Metallica song. Granted, "creeping" might best be applied to armor; on the other hand, that song's tempo is more supersonic than creeping!
"The Beast"--from the Iron Maiden song "The Number of the Beast"
"Hammersmith"--from Motorhead's great live album "No Sleep Till Hammersmith."
A night-fighter version could be called the "Night Hunter" after a song by an obscure Dutch heavy metal band called Picture.
"Speed Metal"--a kind of quick-tempoed heavy metal.
"Motorhead"--One of the loudest, rawest, scuzziest heavy metal bands ever; these guys appealed to punk rockers as well as metalheads.
The plane could also be named for these great bands:
"Metallica"
"Black Sabbath"
"Deep Purple"
"Saxon"--an early 80's British heavy metal band.
"Trouble"--a late 80's/early 90's band with a very dark Black Sabbath-like sound.
"Hendrix"--after the guy who virtually invented metal, of course!
Individual planes could have these names:
"Aces High"--an Iron Maiden song about World War II fighter pilots.
"Lights Out"--a song and album by UFO.
"Destroyer"--the Kiss album. (Twisted Sister also did a song called "Destroyer.")
"Bad Company"--not the heaviest band, but a great name for an individual plane! (Hey, one member of Lynyrd Skynyrd liked Bad Company so much he named his bass boat after them.)
You might be wondering why Led Zeppelin isn't found anywhere here. Not that Zeppelin wasn't a great band (they're one of my all time favorites!), but somehow a ground attack plane named for a slow, clumsy dirigible doesn't seem right!
If I think about it, later I'll prowl through my heavy metal collection and post more possibilities for this hypothetical airplane. Perhaps some of you plane fans who are also heavy metal fans might post ideas, too.
