I would be great if they came up with a 4-6-6-4 Challenger, 2-6-6-6 Allegheny, or even 4-8-8-4 Big Boy to compete with ROG's 1/87 scale.

I don't think Trumpeter does anything in that scale, and for years Revell was the only one around but these German and Soviet trains are still being released giving us a lot of options.

I want any one of those, or a cab forward Southern Pacific in 1/35. That would be insanely huge but so much fun.

Tonight's progress,

I should pretty much have it together tomorrow night depending on how much time I get with it. Then it will be the intensive painting and weathering.

Steve you've got a lot done, I'll need to get to work. It looks fantastic, everything is a mirror image of the 1/35. Awesome...

Steve are you going to follow Wayne's lesson and lay your own track? HO rails work perfectly with 1/72.

That's cool, but I'm upset that they didn't release it in 1/72 scale as well. They did all the other train engines in that scale, why did they skip us when it comes to this?

Absolutely. The engine will be attached, or close to, a Thor 60 mm mortar with it's carriers. The total length will be somewhere around 2 to 2 1/2' long.
I'm not sure if I'm going to show the mortar on the carriers or being dropped off. I think the latter may be an interesting diorama, what do y'all think?
I'm holding off on the mortar for the Artillery GB starting next month.

Gentlemen (cough, cough) I need some support. I just posted the track laying tutorial here

and i need a couple of you to check it out for content, grammar, and spelling. I am way to close to this. Please note any new pictures will have to wait until my next track laying session. Thanks

CLAMPONADO. this isn't as bad as it looks. the top is a tight fit and the ridge it attaches to is thin. this is 10 inches long so the clamps just make it easier to get a tight seal for the glue. just ran out of clamps.

This was the first big hurdle.

Here's tonight's work. I ran out of parts, so I guess I need to start painting.

Terry, do you know what color the valve wheels inside the cab are? I can't seem to find any reference pictures of the cab interior.

I'll install the windows after I paint.

Oh, I like that tutorial. I'll defiantly have to try that for the 1/72 scale track, now that I have a wee little engine to lay the track with.

thank you. did you notice any errors? I just looked and i did spike the rails on 1/72 but only one on the outside more to hold the track then to "look realistic"

No. It looks like you were demonstrating 1/35. I was going to spike the rails on mine. I think I still have spikes from my father's HO remains.

yes the tutorial is 1/35 which is much easier then 1/72. i was saying i did add a couple spikes to my 1/72 but not to the extent of the 1/35.

Started painting. Got the grey on, the wood deck painted along with the dials and valves, the drive wheel connecting rods and some black wash. Tomorrow, I'll apply the number decals, chipped paint/rust spots and pastel weathering. Sounds like fun.
I would like to find some 1/72 german soldiers and engineer/breakmen for the dio.
I'm not planning on doing anything with the rails since I'm going to use Wayne's method to make a set for the loco and mortar.

Steve it looks fantastic, its really coming along nicely. And you were worried. My apologies I haven been on the bench in days but tomorrow and Sat I should get a lot completed.

Steve any thoughts on weathering or how you'll finish it?

Not sure. As you can see, the grey went on kinda thin on the sides because my AB wasn't spraying right and I thinned the paint too thin. I'll probably work that flaw in as faded paint.

Steve that is looking good. I also think that the faded paint look is spot on. Nice work. As for brakemen and engineers, I think Preiser will be the only place to get something like that, but there are several companies that make German troops.

Also, anyone not using the Trumpeter track sections that come in your 1/72 scale train kits, feel free to send them to me. I'll gladly take them off your hands. I guess I'm a lazy modeler who is willing to use all the track sections included in the kits. Thanks.

Keep up the great work guys. I'm hoping to get started on one or both of my trains soon. I just placed an order for some of the additional flatcars I'll need to make these trains complete.

Looking good Steve. at least you remembered to decal before weathering unlike me. I have a big sign now to remind me. You are right, the weathering is the fun part.Pastels, powders, eye makeup, artist oil washes and filters, chipping. if i could go from build to weathering and skip painting and decals i would. don't forget to wash the wood since the back door is open. In reality i think the wood would be darker  BUT from an artistic standpoint of adding color plus given how dark the cab will be anyway it's a good choice. Instruments look good,

More clamping today as i added the end plates to the trucks. DO NOT INFER ALL THIS CLAMPING MEANS IT'S A POORLY MADE MODEL there are big parts with some thin surfaces and some tight fits. the clamps are easier than sitting there holding it for 20 minutes.

That would be HOBBYBOSS but all of us know what you mean. Seriously it doesn't take that much more time to DIY given the effort it takes to make the plastic look good. However, if no one in my clubs want the sections for a diorama i will start a CARE package for you. I would offer all the 1/35 for the K-5 BUT Big Smile

Terry sent me a link to GAUGEMASTER which has all sorts of choo choo stuff including tie plates.

Hey guy's. Is it too late to join this GB. I model 1/25 German railways . I've been modelling in the "wilderness" for a while now .My entry would be the Trumpy high sided wagon with modifications, the "load" being the Revell  L400 Maultier. I'm building the Trumpy BR86 at the moment and I'm also building the Baluard Ko1 diesel shunter,

Thanks Wayne. I know it ain't that much more effort, but with my limited time and resources, I like applying that little time to my models. I do appreciate the care package. I'm going to try and start my RR models today; hopefully I'll have some pics to post tomorrow.
