IRON RAILS 2015 GB

I've placed all the decals and added most of the smaller parts. I decided to add a couple figures so I'm waiting until they're ready before I close in the cab. Onto some pin washes and weathering, almost finished. 

cool. do the couplers work? if not the air hoses are fine. mine aren't on so i can make hose connections between cars. also saw a pic of a built gondola and the handles on the air hoses were red which makes sense and adds some color.

i think the red needs some washes. what color are you going to use? i used burnt umber on my german gray gondola but black or medium gray could work to. maybe a dark red brown, not quite rust brown. i have to do the circular steel on the bumpers on mine.

The answer to the couplers is yes and no. They can be built in almost any configuration but the threaded rod doesn't work so you could find a way to connect them and still look convincing. I've already washed the red once with a black wash, and my thought was to tone it down with some "dirt" pigment but once again looking at a photo it could use another. I painted the bumpers a Burnt Iron from Mr. Hobby Color, it gave it a used iron look, very cool in person, I still have to finish them up.

I just got done with some pin washes, I used a light and med gray and a black to try and simulate a dirty ash look. I'll post a pic in a few minutes.

I seen a photo of the Bunker, very cool, looks like you have a lot of room.

Oh and Jibber....nice workspace, mine is just a TV tray with very poor lighting right now. I'm too embarrassed to show it.

I still need to see some pics on how to make up some rails for 1/72 scale cause I'm just not understanding the process yet.

Steve, a big thanks…Wayne and I figured some would follow along, but maybe when I'm finished I might put it in the Armor Forum for comments. To me its such an interesting subject that even if I didn't have an entry, i'd follow along. One thing that concerns me is how to take full size photos, this thing is huge?

I'll bet it's big.  I can't wait to see Wayne's 1/35 K5. Wat a behemoth that thing is going to be.

And your right,  thr subject is so interesting,  I'd be watching even if I didn't have an entry.

hey Steve and Terry. 

we know. my sci fi GB is kinda slow i do need to start T-2 HKT with lights for that.  I think the fastest one was BRAILLE SCALE  which makes sense but in 6 mionths some of us had 4-6 builds. almost everyone finished. will start a nerw one of those in march.

I will be slow for a few weeks here as i finish my BM-21 MRL for ORPHANED GB. i have ALL the components for my 1/35 lay your own rail tutorial technique and a start picture. May work on it all week off and on taking pics. i think 1/35 will be easier since i can spike the tracks faster. will probably make a rail gauge when done for future builds. remember K-5s were designed to work on damaged and hastily laid tracks so it doesn't have to be high speed elevated gravel bed. BTW Terry, i found the perfect rails, just the right size, about $.80 a foot in aluminum i can use the big brass ones for my 1/25 rail builds (GENERAL and BTTF 3 Deloreon)

for 1/72, which i have done, i should have 1/72 K-5 pics on the forum which will show the homemade rails. i have my gondola  WIP in  armor too, lots of looks but not many comments. maybe if i but an 215 halftrack on it. DOOG made a comment about that a while back, many GB builds aren't seen so i post in GB and appropriate other forum. 

oh and Rob S over on the BUILD BIG GB suggested i put my K-5 on a scratch built Voegele Turntable. if i could find detail plans i would consider that. i do have pics of a 1/72 resin kit for $117 so maybe i can work off of that.

off to the bunker to check on gondola. i cleaned off 2 work stations, one will be my decal and weathering, the other big table for base building plus the K-5 work station. someone in BUILD BIG uses file folder slotted holders to sort and hold his sprues instead of stacking them in the box.

Terry hard to say from the photo. i have turned into an oil wash nut, thanks to some initial encouragement from The DOOG.. do a search for UN UNIMOG. it's white and all the weathering is oil. just c leaned up an egyptian SU-100 with some oils. i think i need to tone it down a bit but looks much better. will post that later too.

I thought black worked best for this one where as if it was a three tone camo I might consider an umber. I don't know, I seem to change my mind as I go sometimes, for example, I was thinking closer to a clean build for this one but then that really isn't realistic. These things for the most part are dirty, dusty, oily, greasy, full of black soot and ash. So I thought I'd dirty it up a bit. I've added a few goodies too.

i make up my washes as i go too. just put second umber wash on wood over decals. took a lot of sheen off. also made up a pastel dark rust for the metal. thinking of a light vertical streaking with a light gray, either oils or pastels.

you misunderstood on the couplers, grasshopper. I meant do YOUR couplers work? mine do because i loaded up the pins and holes with paint so they would be tight.

Sorry on the couplers, they did work but I glued them down into two different configurations. I have a resin set of those couplers in a box here I haven't used yet, I figure if I add a car later I'll use one of those. I can pull them right out, just a tiny bit of glue holding them in just in case.

Also looking at the photo of the couplers, I forgot that I had put a piece of shiny foil in the lights. It made them look better.

Well my first build of 2015 is done, now I have to figure out how to go about shooting this thing. I have a white backdrop but this is one where I think i'll need a series of photos to show it all. I'm going to start some test shots.

calling this done. still need to lay track but base and ties are stained, rails are primed and  rusted with steel tops.

after adding decals i gave the wood a second raw umber wash and then added vertical streaks with gray pastels. the 2 wide lighter streaks on the deck represent where light armored vehicles would sit. 

Wow!  waynec and jibber, you two are truly fine craftsman.  The kits look awesome!

this may go behind the K-5 with soldiers offloading ammo. other possibilities include a light AFV or a sandbagged end with a MG crew being pushed ahead of a locomotive. i have another plus a high sided in the stash.

 i have started laying track which will become a tutorial. i have the ties staines, cut, and glued to the base. rails are painted too. think it's snowy on Wednesday so should get clay down for "terrain".  i think 1/35 is going to be so much easier than 1/72.

FlyerDuke thanks for the nice comments, I should have the finished Locomotive photos up tomorrow.

Wayne maybe if you're going to have the gondola behind the K-5, I would think they'd want some AA protection and soldiers to protect their huge investment? Are you going to add the BR52?

My next build will be Trumpeters WR360 that I'll do for the 1945 Build and copy it over to ours, I'm also going to pu a BR52 in 1/35 just to have around and stare at it..

Mine is going to be in a shooting position so rear truck is in the firing position, not the travel position. generator cart will be on rear truck behind gun.  no flak gun would be that close and i have an ammo loading photo series to work from. 

where are you getting your train figures. got this from PJ over in the BIG BUILD GB. i'm not sure if your BR-86 has journal boxes or not. the BR-52 tender would and the rail cars will.

they were filled all the time, so there would be dirty oil running from the bottom of the cover. hope this helps.

MC, Duke thanks, this was a lot of work but I loved every minute of it. I had two major (to me) issues that I did my best to deal with. First was the large decals and the second was a warped roof over the cab. I tried everything short of heating it up to try and get it to sit correctly but that just wasn't going to happen. Everything else turned out all right.

i have the Vallejo choo choo weathering set. i can scan the instructions and email them to you.i am ready to lay rails and the base will be finished. soooo much easier than OTS. even have rail guide, 39mm from base to base of rail. tutorial will be posted this weekend
