Wayne,

Are you going to install spikes to the rails?

I was going to purchase some HO flex track, Tie sized wood, .025 aprox, and cut the sticks into the appropriate tie length. Then remove the track from the plastic ties, glue them to the new wood ties, at the appropriate gauge. I was then thinking of cutting off the spike plates from the old flex track ties, and gluing them to the new tie/rails.

With the Trumpeter WR360 and the Hase Thor, I'm thinking it should come out to around 2'. I can't imagine the size of your setup. The K5, flatcar, AA, BR52 and did you say a generator? That is going to be EPIC! do you have the room or are you going to send it to the Smithsonian for display?

Steve

hey MC

not doing the BR-52 for this. K-5 is 3 feet long, gondola adds a foot and WR360 another foot. may go with just gun and loading ammo from a truck parked next to it. base would be wider but shorter. the generator is the other part with the crane that sits on the rer truck behind the gun in firing mode.

SprueOne asked the same question so spiked it this morning, took about an hour, have plan for fakey plates too.

you are making 1/72 way to complicated. get some 3/16" widw basswood strips, stain before cutting then dip the ends in the stain and wipe down. buy some loose HO scale rails. i laid my 1/72 track with one tie width between ties. at this scale i don't think you need spikes or plates. i just superglued the rails.

starting on the K-5 with the generator compartment. straightforward except for when the muffler halves slip in the clamp. started to cut them apart, decided i would do more damage so scrapped and puttied. fortunately it only looks weird at the bottom and, it sits vertically and i will texture and rust the hell out of it so that's fine. broke a part to crane but easily fixable. think i will prime and paint the generator body before putting on the roof. probably add all the door handles right before priming after attaching it to a piece of wood to avoid knocking anything off.

Wayne the tracks look fantastic, that'll be another project. The finished photos of the gondola are sweet I wish I could've got better shots of my 86, its just too big to get close enough. The last one I posted may work for you.

Off we go to another cool project.

I think the K-5 will be a lot of repetition but will build up into one impressive model.

generator and ammo crane. the door handles won't  be attached until after all the painting is done. same with the crane winch since i have to run a bunch of cable around the drum. first pic is the winch parts.

K-5 suspension. first pic is the bottom of the two 6 axle trucks, second is a pile of wheels and axles, third is a bunch of suspension assemblies.  by using my sprue nippers and cutting really close and understanding what won't be seen so little sanding necessary.

i do warwheels including military trucks so i am used to detailed suspensions but this is suspension on steroids, second one will go faster. i am cutting really close with my nippers so, given how that looks, primer paint and weathering, and it's undercarriage and wont be seen, i saved some time there. some warpage on the lower base but clamping the upper part will fix that. painting the underside is going to be amusing. lots of light coats.

Wow, that is something Wayne! Makes me glad I only build in 1/72 scale! Still, it reminds me of the suspension I did on my 1/72 scale Br-52 Kriegslokomotive. That was tough! I even put a couple parts on backwards back then which had to be torn out weeks later and re-installed correctly. Fortunately, I seemed to have done well enough to have kept people from seeing it.

Keep going Wayne, this is looking great!

I do hope to start my two Russian Armored trains soon for this. I just have a few more long-term projects to finish up first.

no pics because the second truck suspension is identical to the first. It did go a lot faster.  I should have both suspensions primed this week and the wheels painted and rusted. broke four more pieces but it was i of 4 and a total of 4 sets and the same part broke in the same spot so i suspect a molding issue. easy enough to fix.

Duke, Terry - did you get  the email with the RR weathering pdf?

Wayne I did thanks I thought it to be real informative. Have you had a chance to use the AK Railroad Weathering kit yet, I was wondering what make that different fro  other pigments? I haven't felt fell lately and I'm trying to finish up a build for Gameras GB but I should be up and running any day. Your railgun is looking fantastic BTW.

I've seen that but forgot about it. Thanks.

Can't wait for the BOEING build so i can build AVENGER SAM, LAV SAM, or JGSDF PATRIOT ots.

Terry - Your paints are disgustingly organized.

I got all the wheels done on the K-5. glued, primed in gray, painted Vallejo Air german red brown 2x and touched up, rims are Vallejo oily steel followed by aluminum. after that a pastel mix of burnt umber, sanguine red, ocher and light fray was ground into the outside wheels.. today i will A/B the 24 journal boxes and add them.

added 20 more parts to each of the lower suspensions for the 6 axle trucks. will paint them today and maybe get the tops on. nothing yet new worthy of pics.

Terry,

I am really interested in watching you build this as I have the same kit. You'll give me a benchmark to strive for, although I will probably fall far short.

Steve I just seen your post, follow along and we'll build them together. After building a couple BR86's, this is a lot less complicated. I've done some research on them and the finish and paint are all over the place. They were mostly used for yard work and smaller details and i'm thinking they didn't get a lot of maintenance like the big boys, but they'll look good side by side on our front page.

will post some pics tonight. sent you my pdf on laying track. the 14s were used to move RR guns into firing position from hides. there were only a few 12s and they weren't deployed outside of Germany, but there are workaround explanations to use them.

Ya know Terry,

I think I'll do just that. When I get home and get some time tonight, I think I'll buss that puppy out and start. What the heck, my 1/32 Mustang is on hold waiting for IP decals from the UK, and the 1/350 Indianapolis' PE from Australia (although there's always something to do to the Indy). I may as well start on something that I can finish without stopping, while I wait for parts.
My wife will be all.."When do you get that one? Well honey, I got this from the Christmas money you gave me, so in a way, you got it, HA!

Terry,

I guess I didn't look at the scale of your loco. I have it's little brother. Oh well, I'm still going start on it.

each truck is about the size of the gondola.  i rattle can painted the underside and inside panzer gray going on the assumption the dark yellow would only be on the outside.  most of this as well as the wheels won't be seen. The journal boxes were hand painted with Vallejo Air dark panzer ocher 1943. The color has some green it and, after doing a bunch of modern desert vehicles, it takes some getting used to.. i can always alter it with washes at a later date.

Well here we go. My little guys  suspension and left side wheels. This thing is really detailed. The inside of the frame, that will never be seen, is very detailed. I think if I was careful enough I could make the brakes work

Impressive, most impressive.

Sorry, that should be for the Star Wars GB.

Steve great start. This may be a first doing the same Loco.

Wayne those Journal Boxes, do they fit outside of the rails on the springs? I haven't built anything yet with em. I'm to assume they're oiling tanks?

Steve I may not get much done today, my dog just had surgery yesterday and I'm trying to keep her quiet. Maybe I can get her a bed under my bench later?

i had 2 black lab mixes. neither ventured into the bunker but helped me cooking and doing jig saw puzzles upstairs. the little dog we sit sometimes will climb into my lap, lay on the recliner arm and help with word games and crosswords.
