2015 Messerschmitt Bf 109 Group Build

MC -- nice start! I built an Israeli S-199 a few years ago, using Aeromaster decals, and it came out very nicely indeed. It's one of Hobbycraft's better tools.

I made a start today after wrapping my last two tanks and officially ending my 2014 tally. I opened the Airfix E-4 and Hobbycraft -D, and am working on cockpits and wings, my usual 109 starting subassemblies. I'm aiming to paint the cockpits in the morning, along with gear legs, doors and bays, all in 02. I'm not exactly production-lining these two, but back-to-back builds looks doable, especially as the Hobbycraft 48th scale is at about the same level of complexity as the Airfix new-tool 72.

Hey very nice work so far..... The wife and I ran away for a while and it took me a while to catch up on all the work done by this Group so far... I did however come home to a box on the table from the postman so my 109 should hit the bench later today

I finally got some time on the last day of my vacation to work on my 1/72 109.

it's at least a start.

The kit offers 2 different Israeli markings and 1 Czech. It's going to be easy as the entire AC is painted in RLM 02, everything except for the office interior which is RLM 66.

Jelliot, I got two big Hasegawa G-6s in my stash and those kits come with decals for one of Hartmann's mounts. I won't be using those decals though because I'll build one of them as a JG 300 aircraft and the other one as Barkhorns machine (the other marking option in the kit). I could send you the decals if you are interested.

BTW, I never built a single 109 before either...

 But I think I need to touch up my interior,  it's too light.  Didn't have any interior 109 information,  I'm still on 190GB paint

I hear you re the intimidating Luftwaffe schemes. I botched my first one, but the second was and is satisfying. Got all kinds of help here, great learning environment with all the nice folks here.

John, only just remembered you are doing a G. For that I would go for an RLM 66 pit, the same as the 190. Looks like you have gone for an RLM 02.

Okay, quick question on RLM colors and what is considered "best."  I know there is no perfect solution for this question, and I realize everyone has their favorites.  I was just checking because I've seen RLM colors from MM, Vallejo, Humbrol and AK Interactive.  I'm trying to decide which way to go.  Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

I always go with MM myself.

I use MM Axcrul RLM shades BUUUUT -- they are different from their enamels. the enamels I feel were very accurate but the Acryls leave something to be desired on a number of occasions. I have taken to mixing RLM 74, 75, 78 and 79 from Tamiya acrylics, and others as need be (MM Acryls are hard to get in Australia). 74 and 75 are notably wrong in the MM range.

Steve, do you get yours from an online source or do you pick them up locally?

I was getting them online, however Hobby Town has really stocked up, or did before Christmas, and they are just 5 mi from me, so I've been going there lately. Sometimes Hobby Lobby. They really surprise me withe their selection.

If online I go with eBay. There's a store called altarail that seems to have the MM RLM colors I need. Not bad shipping price or speed either.

Altarail as was mentioned has a lot of cool stuff and another good source is Hobbylinc.com. Fair prices and fast shipping. I'm lucky to have a Hobby Town near with a Hobby Lobby right across the street from them.

Doug, thanks!  I actually just got off of the Hobbylinc website.  That is one of the main areas I buy my stuff online.  They are currently running special on the MM paints and you can pick them up for about $2.79 for 1/2 oz.  I am pretty sure that is what I am going to do, seems to be the best price I've found so far.  I may also check the local Hobby Lobby's and see what they have.

I decided to work on the engine while I wait for the PE interior set to arrive.  I completed assembly of the engine which went together nicely.  Just a bit of filler here and there.  I've looked at a bunch of photos online and can't seem to find any of the bottom of the engine.  I decided to shoot the exhaust manifold a dark rust color.  I added a few drops of MM gun metal to some MM rust.  I'm not sure what it's supposed to be, but I figured what the hell.  If someone knows the true color, please let me know.

I will probably shoot the engine RLM 66.  A dark wash should darken it up.  If that don't work, I'll lightly hit it with flat black.  We'll see.  I'll post pics once I get going on it.

Dang Craig! My Buffies Best 109G-10 CD used to work real well in this computer and I had a TON of Daimler Benz pictures of the bottom of the engine. Doug is the first person I can think of right off hand that would have pics as well as Tucohoward (Jay).

Hey Craig, that engine's a beauty. The block itself should be a semi-gloss black. The part you just painted is piping for the coolant system. Not sure what color they normally are. I don't have any pics of the engine bottoms either. I'll look to make sure and post them here if I do.
