Matt: Bummer about the landing gear.  Those Brassins look awesome though.  I used a set of their wheels on a P-51 but I wasn't overly imressed.  Your plane is looking fantastic none-the-less...

John:  Gorgeous build.  Hard to believe thats 172nd scale, which makes it all the more impressive.

jubya70:  I'm glad you back is better. I used to be a machinist and lifted truck axles into a turret lathe all day for years.  Every now and then my lower back reminds me of those days.   As I age more often than not...

Mike: That D is awesome!  Have you addressed what the white crosses/question marks were for?  If you did I missed it....sorry.

Johnny:  It depends, sometimes they were modified in the field.  I had the same question for the G-6 I'm building and I ended up doctoring up the original splintering.  Heres what I went with....

Speaking of the G-6, I got a little more work done last night.  I got it decaled and Flory washed.  I pieced together the markings with old Aeromaster sheets.  I used the kit stencils and the tail kill board.  Interestingly, these went down fine.  Go figure....

On a side note, I got these Reheat figures off Ebay recently.  Ill probably add one to the base and the other for another 109 or 190.  They look kind of smug yeah?  We'll see how they paint up...

I'm hoping to wrap this build up tonight...

Joe

BrandonK -- many thanks!

BrandonD -- I'll PM you in a moment!

Lawdog -- that is just gorgeous beyond words!!! Oh, and the white crosses indicated a 'schwarmfuhrer' aircraft, Jay found that info in one of his references.

I'm home from work and looking at the radio antenna. I found a ref last night to early 109s, especially in Spain, not being fitted with radio, but I'm guessing by 39 most of the early birds had been retrofitted, especially those serving at home. I'll have one more look before I struggle with the EZ-line one more time (what an ironic name that is!)

Bish and all, many thanks for the kudos!

I'm gonna go with done here .  The glue is still wet on the groundwork.....LOL.  To recap it's the 1/48 Hasegawa Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 in the markings of Anton Hackl of JG II around August of 1943 when JG II was assigned to Reich defense.  Hackl was a 192 kill ace with 34 of those being heavy bombers.

Reference the kit, it was the "Experten" boxing which came with Hackl's markings.  Its nicely engineered, but in my opinion somewhat basic.  I have built many over the years and they do just fall together.  It does need a resin pit, or at least some PE in there.   My issues, or should I say confusion, lyes in trying to use the correct parts for the particular variant I'm building.  Then all the "cut this off...shave that....fill this" stuff.....its mind boggling to me and I usually forget something.  For example, this one has two dimples on the port fuselage which was for an umbrella on tropical versions, not this theater.  I think I used the wrong cannon blister on the starboard side too.  I did remember to shave off the scoops in the canopy.  Anyways, on this build, I used a True Details cockpit and Quickboost guns which I found in the stash.

The Reheat figure was found to be nicely detailed.  I painted "Major Tony" with Tamiya paints and drybrushed with lighter versions of that color.  The skin tones were done with Model Master Enamels with the same techique.  It was all given a brown detailer wash.  Figure painting is really not my forte but I'm trying to improve in this area.  To me, these models just look better with a pilot standing next to them and the chute at his feet is a bonus.  I may eventually branch into vehicles and such too.

I may try the Zveda F model one of these days just to see how it compares.  I heard its better than Hasegawa's kit. I still have 2 G-2's and a G-10 in the stash.

If you'll have me, there's a good chance I'll do another in here.  Thanks for having me and it was a pleasure to be amongst friends again...

Joe, absolutely gorgeous! I shall add these photos to my reference file of great 109s, with your permission! The base came out a treat and the figure sets off the plane wonderfully!

Triple thumbs up!

M/TB379 (still fiddling with the short strand of the antenna wire...)

Joe (Lawdog) - fantastic work! Yes

So when will you tell us and admit you are an alien hybrid?  Seriously, in less than two weeks a beautiful model along with a base and figure.  Don`t know how you do it, but looking forward to seeing your next one.

Jack

Joe,

Your G-6 looks superb. I like these little vignette scenes, they really add to the realism.

Lawdog - that looks great, could have fooled me that it was 1-48 scale, up to this post I thought that I was looking at a 32 scale build.  Outstanding!

really like the base and the added Pilot figure.

Sweet work, John, that's a highly skilful 72! I have Airfix's new E-4 in braille scale, waiting for masks, it'll be a challenge to live up to the bar you've set with this one!

Okay, here's the Hobbycraft Bf 109 D in 1:48th scale, a kit that I can safely say was uncooperative at every step. The cowl guns will be added when they arrive (many thanks, BrandonD!) The antenna wire was a pain and not my best rigging, but the resin wheels came out pretty good. The set of the main gear may be a bit too far forward, it's always hard to tell and the gear locators took filing to get them to mate at all.

I think the lead photo would be a good one for page 1.

Cheers and thanks for a great build, guys -- I'm going to take a short break from 109s and switch momentarily to the dark side, but when the masks and harness arrive, I'll be back!

Wow! Awesome builds. I hope that one day, with more 109s under, they will match ya'lls mastery and precision.  Just awesome!  Thank you for all the excellent advice, tips and encouragement.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.  Falcon, That is looking great.  I see yours has a white tail too.  Mike, congrats on finishing.  I'm not crazy about Hobbycraft either, which tend to be poorly engineered and lacking detail (ever see their DO-17 or even their P-40B?...ouch).  That said, you did a fine job on that D.  I don't see anything wrong with the gear legs.

I'm currently perusing decals for either a G-2 or G-10....or Maybe the Tamiya E-4/7 I have.  I need inspiration!

Mike - great job with 109D Yes ,and understand fully the work required with Hobbycraft kits.  Those personal white markings really do set it apart from the traditional.

---------------------

Joe - glad to see you took my comment as the funny is was intended to be.

For inspiration, have you visited this site of colour profiles.  Not affiliated with any decals sets, but shouldn't be too difficult to cobble things together.

STFD637:You are in que for entry on the roster! Build away and lookin' forward to your progress bud!

Joe(lawdog):You need inspiration?IndifferentDude you've got enough inspiration for all of us! lol . Talk about a guy who uses all of his time at the bench at each session. You've got building a model down the way I walk up to a car when repairing.  You approach it the same way every time and it pays off! It's a good thing I can't build as fast as you do! I'd have models from one end of this house to the other!! lol  Which one of those beautiful pictures would you like to see on the front page bud? I've gotta say thank you sir for participating in what all you fine folks out there have turned in to one helluva great Group Build! I'm looking forward to what you have in store for us next.

Mike: You too have a great finish going and have given me inspiration to build my Hobby Craft C model 109 (this'll be after the G-6 of courseWink). What a great job on a model that gave you that kind of trouble. Thank you also for contributing to this Group Build and I look forward to seeing more of your talent displayed here. YesI'll get right on the posting.

Update: Mike your picture is now posted dude!

I finally managed to read through all the posts in here and I have to say the amount of fantastic work you guys are doing is unbelieveble! I'm probably going to write a loooong list of comments (and maybe some questions) later today.

My time schedule is back to normal again, so I expect to get a bit more done on my own 109s. The mailman also brought me a small box from Ultracast this morning with some new resin wheels for the G-1 as well as the IP decals Doug recommended. That means I can finally finish work on the cockpits!

Is the roster still open to jump into this one?  While I wait oft replacement parts for my 1/32 Corsair I just started a 1/48 Zvezda 109F-4 last night.  Wouldn't mind throwin' down with some  109ers if'n you'll have me.
