1990-1991 Gulf War 25th Anniversary Group Build

Here is some WIP on Landy

Sorry for the delay in an update guys. I normally try and go for once a week. But this build had lots more to do than i had expected. I have also been following a build on Britmodeller and while i am not going to the same lengths to add detail as that guy has, there were a few things i felt realy needed some attention. And just when i thought i was ready, i realised there was somthing else to add.

Anyway, enough of the excuses. After the last update i starte adding the resin. These included new exhausts which i had not realised were in the AA set, but it was easy enought to remove the kit ones. And there was of course more PE to add.

Then it was onto the turret. Lots of PE on here with the handles and mesh for the bins and a few bits of resin.

My usual sequance is to build the whole thing miuns wheels, tracks tools etc and then prime and paint. But given the nature of the side armour, i was going to paint and weather the lower hull, wheels, tracks and inside the armour, put that all together, mask and then carry on. But some test fitting showed that the wheels and tracks can be fitted after the armour, so i decided to carry on with what i know.

I also added the last details to the lights useing some wire rather than the flat PE parts.

Then it was time to primer. A couple of areas needed a little more filling and sanding.

But there was also a couple of pieces on the turret that i had neglected. Phogto's show tanks carrying water jerry cans in the frame on the rear turret bin, but the kit does not include anything for them to sit on. The build on the other forum gave me the answer to that.

And i also had to add tarps to the side bins. I used white Milliput rolled thin, first time i have done this and it works a treat.

I only just added those so need to let them dry for a bit. But in the meantime i can the straps and a bit more detail.

I aslo got the tracks together and coate with NATO black. This Sword tracks and very nice, no flash and the holes are open. The only problem is the wire which is thicker than that used by Fruil and is a real pain to get through the hole. I had to drill most of them out.

And that all for now. I have a couple of days to myself as the Mrs has had to go north to see family, and i have taken tomorrow off work so i am hopeing i can get a lot done to this.

GM, your USS Tarawa has been added to the front page. She looks great. I sawher many times when she was base dout of Long Beach here back in the day. You captured the look of the ship perfectly. Thank you for mixing it up and giving us a ship here! I look forward to the 117.

Bish excellent progress on your Chally. The AM stuff is kicking this build up a few notches compared to the basic OOB build I did of this thing years ago. And thank you for the assist with the finish photos.

Castel, your Rover is progressing nice enough. I know it's giving you some problems, but you are obviously up to the fight.

MC Wow! Great work on the T-72. That how I like to see that beast. Hit and burning.

I'm done! This was a nice kit, although I have no idea of its accuracy.

So introducing the Iraqi T-72 M1 Lion of Babylon. The scene is during the Iraqi retreat on the Ramallah oil field road. This T-72, while trying to get off the road, was hit and just brewed-up, prior to the turret removing itself. I don't know if this is plausible or not, but I wanted to mainly experiment with simulating fire.

Ok, my turn again. I finished off the tarps for the sid bins with straps made from Tamiya tape and the locking mechanisim from lead foil.

After those bits got some primer, it was paint time. I got a bit carrie away and started ading the decals before i remembered to atke some pics.

I have noticed one sligth error from the PE set. The small bit on the drivers hatch next to the handle is PE part 80. The instructions call for one here and 2 for the pick head. But there are only 2 included. Some checking showed that there should be nothing here, so this needs to be removed and out in the proper place.

With the rest of the decals then added, i did a light dry brush, only doing one layer as i don't want to heavy a weathering job here.

The dry brushing was done Tues night with the base enamel and white oil. So i am leaving that to dry until tomorrow before a coat of future, which i hope to do correctly to protect it dfrom the washes to come.

Just a short update. After the coat of future, i gave the hull and turret a dot filter followed by a pin wash. I used the AK interactive wash for DAK vehicles. It's now being left to dry fully before sealing with a mix of future and tamiya flat.

Its a bit heavier in some areas than i had intend, but the dust effects should tone that down a bit.

Once sealed, i can paint all the small details and ad the tools before adding some dust. But i am waiting on some stowage items from Accurate Armour before i can do that. So i will have plenty of time to finish the tracks, figure and a few other bits.

I like it, well worn effects.

Bish it's looking good. i was at the veterans day parade and they had a sand armored HUMVEE and sand armored cab 6x6. the interiors were NATO green and the tire hubs on the HUMVEE were black. all the bolt on armor had lots of bolts but NO PIN WASHES. i know why we do it and i know i will continue to do it, just an interesting observation. also saw the cleanest GAMMA GOAT in the world there.

wayne, thanks. I know what you mean, its a fine balance. I am trying to get more and more away from the artistic side of things, but sometimes its hard to resist adding some form of effect. Its is more than I had planned, the pics do show these rather clean, hardly surprising given that its the desert and sand doesn't act like mud. Its certainly heavier than my desert Pz III, that's what I get for allowing myself to get distracted.

I'll keep my eyes out for your intro.

Sorry for the wiat guys. The stuff i ordered from Accurate Armour arrived sooner than i had expected so i was able to get those done and fitted. After the last update, i gave everything a coat of future with some Tamiya flat. I then added the tools and items from AA, bergans, roll mates and oil cans. I made some bungee's with some wire and used these to secure some of the kit.

According to the decals instructions, the markings on the rear and left of the turret were done on vardboard. The only stuff i had that was sutable was some WW2 German box's. As i don't think a box with a German eagle and Swastika on it would have gone down to well, i managed to find enough that had no print on it to use. None of the bags i have will fit into the side bins and i don't have anything else sutable to use so have decided to leave the side bin half empty. I might add a bit of cam net into the front one but there is no way that will hold a full chally net.

I also worked on the tracks, giving the inside 2 coats of Vallejo steel and an oil wash on Raw Umber and Yellow Orche mix on both sides.

After adding all the baggage, i gave the whole thing another coat of future/Tamiya flat and then some AK N Africa dust effects. This was applied quite heavy low down and light as i went higher up. As i had hoped, this has toned down the pin wash. I also added some exhausts stain with Tamiya smoke mixed with a little black.

Next up will be some streak effects and some oil staining followed by a coat of Alclad clear and then the pigments for the final stage.

Time to wrap this one up and call it done. The last thing to do was add the dust effects, fit the antennas and bring hull and turret together. For the dust i used a mix of miG and AK pigments and the antenna are micro carbon rod. I had considered adding the commander figure and even started painting it. But when i test fitted, i realised he would not fit as is with the MG ammo box's in place, so that decided it for me. Closed down it is.

And the hull. I used some tamiya soot pigments around the exhausts. I also fitted it to the base so i could get it in the soft sand before it hardened.

And then the two were brought together.

And there you have it, my first 35th none WW2 German armour build in many years. I know i could have done more to make it more accurate and it could have more kit on it, but it was nice to be able to relax and not worry to much, i have enough German armour to pull my hair out over.

And thanks Stik for the chance to start my modern British armour collection.
