Jay, looking forward to seeing some pics.

Here's the pit of the Me110F-4

...and together....

The fuselage is together, but I'm still sorting out the engine nacelles.

hi guys,  beginning modeler here from TN.  Would like to join this build if possible. Ive always been a WWII buff and am ready to enjoy modeling. My grandfater was an avid modeler as is one of my uncles.  I grew up roaming my grandpas model room stacked from the floor to the ceiling with WW II models.  I tried building a p-51 when i was 12.....and failed miserably.  Anyways im now 26 and am ready to have another go at modeling.  So as my second attempt at a model in my lifetime id like to try Revells P-38j lightning "pathfinder".  I realize from reading other peoples experience with the model that its probably a mistake to start with this one.....but im a jump in headfirst kind of guy.

I haven't been back to the Widow dio yet... It's at the stage where I usually falter a bit in staying motivated and do something else... It'll be back in the rotation by New-Year's though, I'm sure..

Fellow twin engine fighter builders,

I finally finished the Revell P-38J!  I picked this kit up at Michael's & used a 50% off coupon.  As I walked to the register, I thought to myself: "How bad can it be?"  This model will definitely challenge you.  Make sure you have some putty & sandpaper, there are fitment issues.

I didn't care for the decals that came with the kit, so I purchased the Super Scale set that included "St Louis Blues" from the 433 fighter squadron /475 fighter group that flew in the Phillippines in 1944.  Because this was a relatively inexpensive kit, I figured it would be a good time to try out a natural metal finish.  After construction of the airframe was complete, I primed the model with Mr. Surfacer 1000.  I then shot the entire plane with Alclad II white aluminum.  Once dry (it dries quickly), I taped off a few panels & shot Alclad II duraluminum for contrast.  Once this was dry, I was able to tape off the anti-glare paint on the nose & twin booms.  I had trouble finding references for this particular aircraft.  The top half of the Super Scale sheet said that the anti-glare paint was olive drab.  The bottom half of the sheet said that it was black.  I saw a few pacific P-38Js with black anti-glare paint & liked the look of it.  I'm not sure if it is historically accurate, but I like the black.

It was a fun kit to build & definitely helps develop your modeling skills.  After using Alclad II, I'm no longer afraid of natural metal finishes.  This stuff was very easy to use & it looks great.  My lightning has a new home on the mantle with the other WWII birds that I've built.  Here are 2 pics:

Jay, I'm starting to think you've got a Gekko thing going on!

What with the one you did for the IJN/IJA GB, and now another one.

Progress Update

Started painted the pit today, just needs a coat of Future tomorrow night then an oil wash to pop out the detail.

Having test fitted the fuse halves, can't say I'm impressed. Fit is so-so, and the nose cone is about 0.5mm too wide either side. I'll leave that to the moment, and wait for the Aires gun bay to turn up before I start hacking anything about.

The fit of the engine nacelles is very average as well, doesn;t help I've just finished Tamiya's latest Zero!

I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

John, Melton is about an hours drive away, I go through it on my way to my sister in law's in Lincolnshire.

It's a small world.

I was actually born, and grew up in West London, a stones throw from Heathow, and just down the road from RAF Uxbridge, nerve centre of the Battle of Britain.

Much prefer Oxfordshire these days, far nicer.

It even has a couple or aircraft related claims to fame.

It was where the first Halifax flew from after assembly, and it has one of the few surviving pre-war RAF hangers still in existence.

Woohoo!!!Smile [:)]

It's the Revell 1/48 Me 110G-2, which is really an F!

I'm doing a non-radar equipped machine from 7./NJG1, using a set of decals from Owl, along with Owl Eberspacher exhausts and an Aires resin gun bay.

Not a lot done so far, just a few parts removed from the sprues.

The P-38 is one of my all time favorite fighters of WWII. I have the 1/72 MPC lightning in my stash but I admit I'm afraid to start it. You have mirrored what EVERONE seems to say about building this aircraft. Maybe I'll give it a go after I improve my skills a little more.

I look forward to seeing more pictures of your progress.

White Aluminum ? I did not know they had that.   It looks good, and I wonder what it looks like compared to Alclads regular Aluminum ?

Fellow Twin Engine Fighter Builders,

Here's an update on my Revell P-38J:

Wow, this kit sure does humble you.  I've spent ALOT of time puttying and sanding.  Most of my trouble was with the nose.  The cone & gun bay doors just don't fit together.  I had to load tons of putty to make them flush.  The canopy also didn't fit well, but a little putty fixed it.  If anyone builds this kit, I recommend attaching the canopy prior to painting your aircraft.

This is my first attempt at a natural metal finish.  I primed the lightning with Mr. Surfacer 1000.  The NMF is white aluminum by Alclad II.  I taped a few panels off & shot them with Duraluminum for contrast.  I hope to shoot the anti-glare paint on the nose & twin booms tonite.

Here's a pic:

Thanks fo the compliments Mike.  If it is a rebox the kit has great fit.
