AIRCRAFT - Concorde/SST Group Build

well guys, she's now in primer and i am getting reay to topcoat the beastie. pics will be posted when i have got a host for my pics. my own website has got a few bugs to sort out so i can't use that yet.

Hannants are now advertising the new 1/72 Airfix Concorde in their Future Releases section.

Price is £18.99 (Just under 4 windscreens - Sorry Tango!).

I guess I'm going to have to build that extension on my house after all!

Heller and Airfix have been releasing the same kits for quite a while, Brian... I was at the London Toy Fair today and saw the new Heller kits, such as the Jeep, the landing craft and the GMC truck in Airfix boxes. What surprised me was the price. £19.99 is cheap for such a big model. The Heller kit I saw info about comes with a CD-Rom and other goodies, hence the extra £10, I suppose..?!

I wanted to offer up a few photos of the Concorde that are fairly fresh. I was one who attended the pre-opening of the new Air and Space museum at Dulles in Washington and took "research" photos of some of the stuff there. I have a few of their Concorde and would gladly share them if you would like.

I will get them out to you, then! No concorde, but I am working on a 1/32 scale conversion to an "A" model F-86. My father was a crew chief during the Korean war, serving with the fighter weapons school at Nellis AFB. I'm trying to build his particular aircraft (FU-201). Lots of photo-etch, and I'm going to try an honest aluminum finish with some combination of Bare metal foil, etc... I am just ready to begin.

I left the hobby for many years (I retired from the US Submarine Force), and am gearing up for my return. I am about 50% done with a 1/12 F-1 car that I received as a gift. It is GOOD to be back!

Hi all Here's a little update on my nightmare,-I mean my concorde!

I'm still waiting to hear from revell about my replacement windscreen. I emailed them saying that I thought £5.00 was way too much to pay. So far they have'nt got back to me..........
The white paint is starting to look right after a couple of coats, I think after another spray it'll be right. I feel like I'm in modelling limbo at the minute, waiting for the windscreen. Mind you, Brasil models are releasing a resin windscreen soon priced at £2.69. Mmmm...explain that one revell!

Braz are releasing a correct supersonic ramp, but you'd need to correct the shape of the fuselage too... Might be a bit late if you are in the painting stage...

DJ, sounds like correcting the fuselage could be tricky, maybe I should eat some humble pie and wait for revell to get back to me!

After seeing your Concorde on Ron's gallery along with the others- I feel quite jealous and I want mine to look that good! At the moment I just want to get the front end finished so I can complete the painting stage. I guess I'll just have to wait.................

Hi guys, DJ, i have not been on the forum for a while but i see you picked up on the 1:72 Heller / Airfix Concorde kits. There is still an element of doubt about the super size kit, the box image from modelstories seems not to actually mention scale which seems a bit odd ?, the artwork is as Hellers 1:125 (or 1:144 ?) Concorde with a new background. It appears to have a DVD with it and this has caused a few peple to believe its a 1:144 'special edition' (going on price variations with or without the DVD) some websites are notorious for getting 1:144 down as 1:72 also.
i hope all this is wrong of course but for now the jury is still out i reckon.
June 04 is given as a release date and this is one positive for 1:72, otherwise why wait ?
Great to see you all keeping so many Concordes 'in service' did anyone add a Tu144 to the groupbuild ? (maybe i missed the calling )

The Airfix artwork on the future Concorde kit states 1/72. I saw that at the London Toy Fair, so I presume they know what they are doing. I'm still questionning the price though..!

Unfortunately, I still haven't found a decently priced Tu-144...

had you said you'd seen the 1:72 Airfix Concorde box i would'nt have had to blurb on about the doubts. i cant read your mind ?

Latest I have on the Airfix big one is that it's due to arrive in June!

3 months to drastically 'What if' it before Telford 2004!

A year and three months is probably nearer the mark!

Although I'm not far from finishing my Concorde, it looks like I'll have to wait until after February to do it... I'm clogged up with display models to build for a customer, for the Trucks 'n' Tracks show at the end of the month..! How's yours progressing, Guys..?

Hi Domi, and the rest of you guys. due to work comitments and some other stuff going on at the moment mine is slow progress, i have one coat of white on and it'll need a couple more yet, then there's the blue cheatline and the tail to mask / paint, the u/c to finish ect,ect. how about an extention to the build time?. it,ll give us both a bit of "breathing space" plus Tango 1 will have some more time to sort a canopy out. btw Tango1 i will be sending you an e-mail, ihave an idea to get you a canopy without you spending five quid. later and best regards

like gregers says I'm still waiting for a canopy but revell showed mercy and waved the five quid as a goodwill jesture. Wonder if they read these posts?
I've got a nice white finish on my bird now and thanks to Greg I have the markings that I need. I'll be re-painting the engines and detailing the landing gear tomorrow.
I asked my boss for some time off in march and if I get it I hope to finish the model in time for my friends birthday.
If anyone has any tips for painting the very fine lines on the supersonic ramp-I'd be very greateful!

you could try white rub-on transfers. Some sheets have long unbroken lines some place or another, and most have little fine lines under the letters. I often use the black ones to detail airliners (rain gutters on top of doors, lines on the radar nose,..).

Went to the Seattle Museum of Flight the other day, wanted to see the Concorde but unfortunately they were having some silly event so it wasn't possible. Still snapped a few photos from beyond the fence. Nice looking plane, smaller than you'd expect, and the windows were just tiny. Landing gear seems very long (tall) but maybe that's because the body is small.



If anyone wants me to e-mail my other photos (I shot the whole body, but they are not that great), let me know and I'll send them on.

my Concorde has had a bit of a setback today, i brought it down from my modeling room to do some work on and whilst i was in the kitchen making a cup of tea it got clobbered by a tomcat, not the F14 variety tho, the F....errrrr four legged type. one main leg damaged (easy to repair tho) and BOTH wings off, GRRRRRR. i have glued the wings back on and have filled the wing roots, this has set me back quite a bit because it was ready or its last gloss coat untill this happened. i am going to work my tail off to get it finished for the march deadline tho. i can't find any rub on letters for the airline name yet and hand painting them will be very hard work so i may change my mind on what it will be finished as, the other option i had in mind will make it a bit easier tho. how are your "pocket rockets" doing?.

BTW Rob, i can't wait to see your finished kit once you have attacked it, that conversion you mentioned at the model show sounds awesome.

update, the wing roots are filled filed and sanded, two more coats of white are on and it'll need another two yet (to hide the filler). i am going to try something for the markings. i have the apropriate letters but they are decals and in the wrong color so i will cut around them then paint them gold. hopefully this will work as i would love to see it in the scheme that i have in mind.

latest.........the airframe is finally all white, (no thanks to Jazz - the cat), i have had trouble getting the acrilic paint to stick to the primer (also acrilic)even tho i gave it a light sanding to give it something to key to and cleaned it down with panelwipe to get rid of the dust. hopefully it will be ok when i pull off the masking tape that i am going to have to use to get the cheatline straight, i will run the tape between my fingers to make it less sticky tho, just in case. plus i will leave it alone for a couple of days for the paint to fully cure.

Dano, compared to 'normal' airliners, the Concorde is quite skinny indeed. The fuselage section is very small, just wide enough for 4 seats and the aisle, and is very cramped. And those windows are very small, you are right! Wait to see the inside, if you can that is, and I bet you'll be surprised by the cockpit too, very '60s looking and cramped too. But then Concorde is 1960s technology, covered with a 21st Century body..!

thanks Domi, i'll post some pics a.s.a.p i pulled off the masking from the underside and the white paint came off with it. now i am goint to have real trouble doing the cheatline down the fuselage and around the nose. really going to have to reconsider the options for the markings. i'll let the cat out of the bag so to speak (even tho cats are a sore subject LOL) i was going to do it in BOAC livery but now with the paint having adhesion problems that may not work. i am going to see if i have anough decal striping to paint blue and do it that way including the nose. either way its been one bear of a kit. the underside don look too pretty now as i have had to brush in the areas that came away with the tape. i must admit that if it wasn't for building this kit for the group build it would have been in the spares box by now. thanks for giving me the insparation guys. hen airfix / heller bring out the 1/72nd kit are they only doing the latest markings?. it'd look much better in the original scheme......which i just remembered i should have the decals for up in the loft. gotta go searching. later.
