No, you are absolutely correct, for a WWII Sherman. The Sherman's which received the 76mm gun in WWII also had the T26 turret. The Shermans with the standard 75mm turret which received the 76mm gun was a post war mod.
The standard 75mm turret was even used with the 90mm M3 gun (the same as the M36) for a trial. The turret was WAY cramped, so it was abandoned, but it did fit (barely).
That's one of the things that makes the Sherman so great to model. Just about anything goes. All you need is a picture or some documentation and it's off to the races. My personal favorites have to be the following:
1. The Sherman Crocodile (I've got the stuff to convert one of these. Just don't have the time)
2. The Sherman with the Mineroller suspension. (I've seen one of these done by a friend in 1/35 scale. Super Cool
)
3. The Sherman with the Half Track Suspension. Talk about weird.
4. The Crab.
5. The DD
The more I keep on this list, the more I keep adding. There's just too much cool stuff.
