I see the skink turret was on the range, which 'stinks'. Glad to see somebody had brains enough to get it into a museum where it belongs!
Took out my kit last night and wonder of wonders! Some kind soul had already made the indi' link tracks in that old DML kit! (I know, it was me about three years ago, but I'd forgotten about it!).

Hey, lots of information about the "Skink" lately, huh? But I guess that is not for me. I'll have either the M-10 or M36. These are already available here at about 10 bucks.

Thanks for the link Jon.

It shows both the early and late turrets and both the standard Sherman tracks and the Canadian Dry Pin tracks.

Robert,

You are right about the turret, but it was miles ahead of the old M36 Tamiya offering.

Your idea would definitely be the way to go.
I would tip my hat to the Tamiya hull. The exhaust and the pioneer tools are better. But I'd swap the bogies for the Academy ones.

Just my 2 cents.

Just finished building that one Latch .... a decent enough kit but the turret kind of sucks. With the release of the new M36 from Academy I may take another run at it someday using the turret from them and slapping it on either and Italeri or Tamiya hull.

Robert and Jon,

Thanks for the pictures of the Skink.

Makes me want to dig it out. But, I'm probably only going to get one kit finished for the Sherman Build.

BTW: Don't anybody forget about the M36B1! Italeri made that kit and you can occasionally find it. I found one in a hobby shop minus instructions. I paid $9 for it. Who needs instructions?

Mark - Here's the method that I use to make sandbags.
1) Using A-B Putty, I combine the two parts and then roll it out into a long "snake".
2) Flatten the whole thing out a bit
3) cut out a bunch of sandbag lengths
4) press a seam into the edges with a toothpick
5) apply to the model, molding it to the contures of the vehicle at the same time
6) press the exterior with some course material to leave an impression
7) allow to dry, then paint and weather.

Furthering the saga of the Skink ..... I'm not sure if anyone is going to take a crack at building this turret for the build, but here's some more pictures of the only other known surviving turret (Jon's pic is the second one found).
Maybe you all would like these for some future builds though.
These pics were taken a the R.C.A. Museum in Shilo, Manitoba.

I have also read that some one used chiclet gum to make the sand bags. They put the gum in water to disolve the hard shell, used a hankerchief to give it texture and used a hobby knife to create the seams.

You do Mark !!! You just don't know it yet. I agree 100% with both Latch and Jon, none better than the ones you make yourself. I use 2 part epoxy putty to make mine instead of milliput though.

IMHO Scratchbuilt sandbags look the best.

They sit where they are suppose too and you have the exact number you need. They even look like they have conformed to the shape of the vehicle.

Just my 2 cents.

Jon, I have never used Milliput before. I do not know if I want to scratch build sand bags, but that might have to happen.

I want to have sand bags on my Sherman Calliope. Who makes the most realistic sand bags. I could go to missing-lynx flea market. Some guy has a Kirin m4 hull with sand bags for $15.00. What would you guys recommend.

Great news Ron !!! A great Christmas gift.

Re: Skink - Contacted Commanders about a year ago and the kit is OOP and was told that there was no plans for the future to re-release it. As Latch has already pointed out, not the best in the world anyway.

CDP indy resin tracks can be purchased from S-Models in Poland for $5 U.S. I've built a couple of their kits, typical Eastern European, but have no experience with these tracks at all.

Ditto, Ron. Congrats on being able to be home. I get what you say about the double feelings, though.

Hey! Good news from my Guard unit!!! We're OFF ALERT! This means I'll be able to participate in this build! I'm both happy and a bit sad about this change in our status. However, there's still a chance in the future, so that part of me still has hope for a deployment, while the other part is happy to be staying 'home' with my family! A good Christmas gift!

ngc7293,

Beware of the Commanders Models "Skink".

The turret doesn't represent either the early or the late. It will have to be modified to represent either (it's closer to the early turret). The drive sprockets for the Canadian Dry Pin Tracks are a Joke. The kit doesn't include the Canadian dry pin tracks and that is one item that I don't believe has been released by anybody.

But having said all this, an accurate Skink can be built from the kit. There was one of the Skinks which used regular Sherman tracks and had the early turret. You will need to modify the turret to the early version. Get some after-market tracks to match the ones that were on the one.

Check out the Hunnicutt on the Sherman. There are several good photo's of the Skinks in there. Including the one with the early turret and the Sherman tracks.

I hope this helps.
