Is there a official start date or can we start at will?

In the original post I though we could start right away, if there was enough interest, and as of now I have 11 (including myself) signed up so sounds like enough to me. So have at it! Thumbs Up [tup]

But remember you don't have to start now, we'll be doing this GB till June so plenty of time still remains.

See ya

Hey,

      Everyone

Started mine over the weekend. Decided to go with Italeri/Zvezda 1/35 ISU-152 with an Eduards barrel and Fruilmodel tracks. Will keep posting WIP pics as build moves along.

Slight problem with the ISU-152 (i.e. I put the roadwheels on backwards!Banged Head [banghead]). So I'll be reposting some WIP pics of my "new" build Tamiya's 1/35 T-62A w/ Barrel Depot Main Gun.

See ya

Excellent!  I have to finish couple things first then get going on my sub mini-fleet including the Alfa.  Some of the armor kits mentioned here sound (and look) REAL nice.... Look forward to this!

The kit particulars are: 1:700 ARII Modern Subs Series 3 - Kit # A643, the Red Star - Alfa Class

Oh, the Hobby Boss 1:700 modern sub offerings are better/cheaper than the ARII old molds, if anyone feels the needs for Nuke Speed ;)

Hi chaps!  I'm in, if that's OK, with a 1/72 Roden IS-3 Stalin heavy tank.  I was thinking of a T-54, but the Polish scheme looked more interesting (it has an eagle on it!).  I also have a MiG-21 in 1/72 from Academy, but I can't work out which country the scheme is for!  It's all over BMF, with a black cat on the tail, and the writing 'MG-47' on the nose, and a black and white roundel.  I'm guessing it's not Soviet!  There's also a 1/48 Eduard Polikarpov I-16 as used in the Spanish civil war, but, I don't think that's acceptable?

Hey

      osher

Got you down for the IS-3 for now. One of the requirements of this GB is the subject must have Soviet markings or like in the case of the Alfa Submarine have no marking or only been used by the Soviets.

Hope your ok with this.

Scott

Hi Randy -- Awwww, you've made me blush! Big Smile [:D] It's seriously good to have my work appreciated, my friend! But don't sell your own short, you're a darn good styrene surgeon too!

Well, I guess that clinches it, I'd better build that MiG! I have the parts laid out for inspection, there are a few things to do, give them a good scrub to get rid of the demoulding agent, sand back the fabric detail (for some reason moulded as raised ribs rather than depressions of stretched fabric), consider the Squadron vacform canopy, get the Express Masks and shop around for some AM decals. I have the edition of the kit with ten markings choices and I would like to do five of them, but I've read in reviews that the ICM decals are useless, they'll shatter. I can give them a go with a heavy application of Microscale Liquid Decal Film and see if it'll hold them together (MS suggest that for any decals that look suspect at all).

We could coordinate, if you like, and make sure we do different schemes? Or would you like to go head to head on substantially the same scheme?

Cheers, looking forward to it,

Mike/TB379

Ah,

I understand if your scared of the big bad Thunderbolt379. Of course you can change your build. Boohoo [BH] Would you like some warm milk too? Laugh [(-D]

Scott

P.S. Yes, this is a sarcistic joke. After seen your Wildcat in the Guadalcanal GB I know who's skill is better. (i.e. not mine, Boohoo [BH])

Scott huh yeah but can ya make the milk cold and can I get some warm cookies with it ? Big Smile [:D] Thanks for the compliment on the Wildcat, I hope to have final pics up today if the sun will come out.

Thunderbolt it would be a blast to build in concert with you, although head to head I dunno, I know who would win out on that one Big Smile [:D] I pulled the kit out of the closet this morning, opened it up and took another look at it. I think you are right about the decals those are ultra thin ! I cant see any carrier film at all so I too think the wise move would be AM decals. , if they are available. I didnt know Squadron had a vacuformed canopy for this kit so with all that detail in the cockpit I think thats the way to go as the kit part is not very clear. Be ready with the putty too looks to be some filling and sanding to do espcially at the wing root from what I saw in a build of this kit. What caught my eye on this one besides the airframe was the winterized whitewash finish and the red wing tips, but I am open as far as a paint scheme goes because it would be fun to build squadron mates. Oh and we must have the same kit also as mine has 10 options for markings the kit number is 48051. This is gonna be fun !

Hey

Yes, you can cross over with the BTR. Must have Soviet markings, though. Should I put you on the main post for this kit?

Hey

    Everyone

Just want to give an update on this GB. First, with newest participant "camo junkie" we have 14 modelers signed up including myself. Make a Toast [#toast]

As this is the first GB I'm running. I would like to thank all of those who have signed up and will sign up later. Also, although I know this is covered in the main post I want to go over some of the rules:

1.) Soviet subjects, only. So anything from 1917 to 1991 in Soviet markings. (If it had markings.)

2.) Partial builds and Crossovers, OK.

3.) Start date: NOW or when you fell like it but must be done by June 30th, 2010.

     End date: June 30th, 2010.

Join by date: NONE! So join anytime.

4.) Most important rule: HAVE FUN!!!!

Also, WIP pics are highly encouraged but not required. The only rules I'm really strict about are #1 and #4, especially #4!Big Smile [:D]

Finally, from the beginning I want to do some kind of ranking system, so people could build more than one kit if they desired. But I didn't want to propose it then because I was not sure how much interest this GB would have.

So I guess what I'm asking is what does everyone think about adding a ranking system?

Thanks

Scott

Scott I dont really understand what you mean by a ranking system, call me dense I dunno. You would rank someone by number of models built for the group ?

Hey,

      Randy

I think the best way to explain is by example. So take a look at this link to the main post for dupes 1,000 Roadwheels GB, that is where I got the idea.

Thanks

Hi Scott -- I had a quick count up and I have at least fifty kits appropriate to this build, so something tells me I'll knock off an extra one or two before the close date. May I suggest a line of small red stars on the badge to record the total number of builds... Kinda like the discrete stars that appear in the "P" in the Playboy logo... Big Smile [:D]

Randy -- great to see we have the same edition of the MiG-3 kit with the ten schemes. My info at the moment is there are good quality AM decals to be had on Aeromaster 48-313 and 48-314, so I'll be on the lookout for them, though it would still be worth doing the Liquid Decal Film treatment to see if the kit markings are any use before binning them.

Thanks for the links, great research data!

There's plenty of time for research and bringing the AMs together -- there's a first-rate cockpit set for this kit as well, Aires I think but don't quote me.

Here are some reviews of the kit and accessories:

http://www.internetmodeler.com/2001/february/aviation/mig-3.htm

http://www.swannysmodels.com/Mig3.html

http://hsfeatures.com/features04/mig3tb_1.htm  <== This one's the kicker!

http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/ModelGallery/mig3_48.php

Yes, the winter schemes are iconic, and the red upper wings are that splash of color you don't usually find in military combat markings. The five schemes I'm interested in are that one, plus one of the all-white schemes with the red arrow down the fuselage, and three of the camo schemes -- the dark green/light green one, one of the green/tan loose-pattern examples, and the green/tan tight-pattern plus black 'tigerstripes' overall. There's plenty of challenge in that lot, and I'm not sure which to choose! The dark/light green scheme was featured in Trumpeter's 1:48 kit, which is probably very good, and should be for the price. They have a 1:32 as well.

Cheers,

Mike

Slight change of plans:  I looked at the IS-3 kit, only to see it has a option for Egypt.  Ohhhh, must do that one!  My T-54 has a Polish option, which is nice.  So, time for something else.  I was very tempted by a variety of aircraft kits, but they all were either non-Soviet, or, in the case of the Havoc, in service post communism.  Then I found it, or them even!  Two Academy kits, one of the MiG-29, one of MiG-23.  Whilst no dates for either decal option, they seem to be Soviet era (red stars, no extraneous writing, etc).  So, either one, or the other, or, indeed, both for me!

No problem, osher. Changed it on the main post. Just wondering what scale?

And just so it is clear to everyone, you CAN change your kit at anytime.

Anyone else, want to chime in on the possible ranking system?

See Ya

Scott the ranking system sounds good to me Big Smile [:D] And yeah I think Thunderbolts idea for the stars would be great as I hope to get a second build in.

Thunderbolt thanks for the links. I do like the redwing winter fighters, but after reading one of the links I posted, those redwings dont seem right. They would stand out big time in the snow on the ground or in the sky, ( not a good idea for combat ). I would think that the green would have been more likely the true color. The red does look much better though. What are your thoughts.
