So I've been doing a bit of digging around and I found a set of Bison Decals for you 1/35ers for Soviet occupation and later mujahideen tanks (1989 to 2001)

Soviet Tanks
Airborne Units

Afghan tanks 1
Afghan tanks 2

Thought it might be a cool option.

Its okay, though I don't like the stylized latin/cyrillic script, it doesn't feel russian.

Some Russian sites have great images we could use like this one:

Russian soldier's art

Hmmm....I don't know. It doesn't really "scream" the Soviet-Afghan War. However, when I get some of my badges done(hopefully later this week) we'll have a vote on all the badges to decide which one's we'll keep, wether it be one or all of them. Hope this sounds good to everyone.

Hmmm well that badge didn't seem to be too much of a winner, oh well stuff happens.  The image by the way is a couple of abandoned T-55s left behind by retreating Soviet forces at Bagram air base.

Good news though on the 1/35 T-55 front though, I got an email last night that the set of Modelkasten tracks that I ordered have been shipped Propeller [8-]

I like the image, but the copy is kinda funky, and Mikey speaks the language, after all...

I flocked up and started on my BTR 152 APC and BTR 152 Command vehicle. Oops, just got excited...

Hey the BTR-60 is still enroute and I will hold that till 12/1/09.

Busy looking up cool cammo. Overall brown dust seems to be the order of the day.

Here's a question. If you read Sebastian Ungers article "Fire", he told a story of how the Northern Alliance built a bus from a shot-down helo, maybe an MI-8 and drove it around. I'd love to get more info on that.

Best books: Frederick Forsythe "Lie Down With Lions". James Michener "Caravans".

B-man I haven't come across anything about it but I'll keep my eyes peeled... its really striking how poorly covered the region was during the 1990s. Have you by chance read Coll's Ghost Wars or Stewart's the Places in Between?

No and no. In my mailbox today, the very exquisite Trumpeter BTR-80 in 1/72. I'm so sold on this after looking it over that I want more of them. Also the T-54 and 55 by Trump are looking good...

Italeri also makes a T-62 which seems pretty good too. I've also been eying up ACE's BMP-1 and 3s too.

As for the books, I'll look for Michener's book; I really liked the Bridges over Toki-ra (only behind Salter's The Hunters to me as a great flying novel) and this should be good. Coll's is a great account of this period with some really good stories you might enjoy if you liked Unger's work. There's this story of a Mujahideen commander wearing a silver Russian high altitude fighter suit on a broken down bike meeting with a CIA operative at the dead of night which I found memorable.

That's awesome, buddy! I'll PM...

What kit will the hind be?

I'm thinking of adding a 1/48 KOPRO in w/some Eduard details...

Start w/ the RoG, end w/ the KP kit...

We've got a year, right?Big Smile [:D]

mg. ,

Can I do that? Add another kit?

Guys I'm not much of an expert on Soviet camo or colors for tanks so could someone give me a heads up on what color green my 70's vintage T-55 should be?

I can get hold of Vallejo, Tamiya, Gunze, Model Master Enamel & Humbrol enamel paints.

Thanks

I'm going with MM Russian Armor Green, whited out a little since my BTR is abt the size of a cigarette lighter, with a camo of Humbrol Light Stone. Then, a whole lot of gray dust all over everything.

HSteve - Sorry about the delayed response, yes you can add as many builds as you want. I'll update the roster very soon.

BearTrappers- Guys I'm sorry I didn't get the badges up this weekend. I had to get some supplies for my studio class and finish up a few architectural projects. But I'll try to get the badges finished very, very soon. (that way we can have the vote.)

Well the blst models set for the T-55 arived today and after a quick inspection I must say I'm very happy with it.  The only part that I can see that is damaged (beyond repair) are the drivers view ports.  This is not a big deal as I'll just use a combo of kit part, Blast and scratchbuilding to fix it up.

Cheers

As long as it's available until I can afford it, yeah...

I've found one kit available, and from what -neu- has told me, they're not great kits...

-neu- ,

bad fit, flash, etc.?

The KP costs around 50 bucks... I want to hear from some folks who've built 'em before I go nuts...

Eduard has an entire set of p/e stuff to detail it - cockpit, exterior, you name it...

I'm a little cautious about sinking +/- 100 bucks into a model; I've got a year to build and hone my skills, though...

Well thats difficult to say because I don't know the 1/48 kit. KP kits weren't the best of quality, especially when they were the only game in town before the fall of communism. Yet their quality has increased significantly since then, especially in 1/48 (which admittedly isn't a scale I build.) Poking around the net this one seems to a well regarded model.

One thing; even if KP isn't the best in quality I found its flaws really help build your skills. It maybe aggravating at times, but you build a couple of these then go and work on a tamiya or hasegawa, you find that your skills are much improved. I was actually raised up on these kits by my mother who brought them back for me... I can tell you I'm a much better builder because of them.

Sorry about not getting the badges up this weekend guys. I've been swamped with work again this weekend, but I'll try to get some work on them done later this week.

Going to the 27th Butch O'Hare IPMS show on Saturday(won't be entering any builds) but maybe I'll pick up a Shilka or something.....guess I better get their early.

I admit I am thinking about joining this one, but for now just a question. Are the MiG-19, Su-15, Su-20, Su-22, Tu-95 and Tu-128 not listed because they didn't fly actual combat sorties during the war or for some other reason? I am pretty positive they were all "In the inventory" during this time frame.

Four of those could be included; the Mig-19, the SU-20/22 and the TU-95. The Su-15 and 128 were high altitude bomber interceptors, which weren't really useful in the counterinsurgency war.

Hey MG, I would like to get in on this one as well.  I have  Maquette 1/35 ASU-57.  I will probably have to fight this kit to get it done.  I have attempted ths Russian brand before and it was horrific and spent many days in theropy afterwards and Johnny Walker and I became close friends............LOL.  let me know if I can hop in this GB.

I looked into it and I will include the Su-20, Su-22, and the Tu-95. The Su-15 and Tu-128 are not going to be included because I found no proof of those ever seeing service in the Soviet-Afghan War.

As for the MiG-19, I haven't found any references that state it was in the war, but if anyone has proof otherwise please share.

Roster and vehicle list have been updated.

Yesterday at the 27th Butch O'Hare IPMS open meet, I picked up a Tamiya 1/35 T-72M1 for the fantastic price of $10.00.Big Smile [:D] So I'm gonna be building that for the Bear Trap GB......unfortunatley the rubberband tracks look pretty bad.

Anyone know where I can get a pair of ModelKasten T-72 tracks very cheap?

I have been looking for some for a while now as well. Great Models has them listed but they are out of stock and have been for a while. I'll keep my eyes open for em. Seen em in the past for $22 to $26 range.

They were "out of stock" on some other online hobby sites too.......I wonder if they were discontinued or something. I know Miniarm makes a set of tracks, but their resin unfortunately.

Maybe I should have bought the Friuls at the IPMS meet yesterday, but they were $33 dollars or so and even if I did haggle for them they still would have been too pricey for me. Especially considering the T-72 kit cost $10 and I didn't want to spend three times that on just the tracks.

I want a set for my T-62. Havent really started looking yet but if I cant find em online I will hit the local shop. Maybe he can order them through his own supplier. If not the kit ones will do. Unlike yours, my kit comes with indy tracks and they dont look that bad.

This is my first attempt to post pictures to a web site. Figure I better get some practice in before the real deal starts up.

Just some plane jane pics of the box and some parts. I didnt worry about picture quality or lighting or anything. Purely done just to see if I could get them to post.

Complete kit

Tracks and roadwheels

Box art

Lower hull, metal barrel, clear plastic, and PE
