I'm going to do the 1/350 Trumpeter Jeremiah O'Brien. This will be a lot of fun.

Your timing is impeccableSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]... Been looking for the right inspiration to work on either my 1/72 scale Type VIIC-41 or my 1/350 scale bismark.... Don't write me down yet but i will sure give it some serious thought, especially given the timeframe...

Hello, I have ordered a Junkers Ju 290 for a sub-group build of another GB.  If I can use that, I would like to join.  The early 2010 date gives me a chance to get it in (it is back-ordered), and finish some other projects.  It would be the RoG 1/72 A7 Attacker version.

Thanks for your consideration,

Greg

Your on the list. I'll be anxious to see that kit done. I like the look of the 290 and have not seen a kit of one built, yet.

Sure if it's done up as a Seafire that served on an HMS carrier in the Atlantic.

Honestly, I do not want to be in a position to tell people "no, you can't be in this build". This GB is really just a suggestion for people build and post images together for a related subject theme. If some one decided to post their Tiger tank images in this thread, I'm not going to start an e-mail/PM fight to get them to stop. The most I would do is say 'Nice tiger, but I'm pretty sure that weren't used in the Atlantic.

If it's ok with everyone, I'd like February 24th to be the start date for this build. The 24th is the 70th anniversary of the day the Snowberry was laid down for construction. I'll leave the end date open for now.

Count me in please.  I'm still gearing up to get back into the hobby but should be building by the start date.  Thinking of either something Coastal Command or an escort of some sort.

Silentmodeller, the Battle of the Atlantic refers to the efforts to get the convoys to/from the UK from North America etc and the Germans' interception of them with surface ships, U-boats and aircraft.  Not really linked to the Battle of Britain but I can see a space for a Spitfire - the RAF deployed fighter squadrons to Northern Ireland to intercept the German Fw 200 Condors that flew out over the Atlantic hunting the convoys.  If you can find a Spit that did that...

Up to Aurora-7 on that one.

Silentmodeler,

Battle of Brittain doesn't really fit for this Battle of the Atlantic build but I really like  Antipodean Andy's suggestion for the spits that chased down FW-200's.

Also, while I'm not sure what the Revell Mk II is specifically, I know MK IIC spits were used as Seafires.

Andy, I've got you down on the list.

Just ordered the Dragon 1/350 USS Buchanan (Gleave class) off Dragonusaonline.  The plan is to do the kit as USS Quick for this build - http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/490.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Quick_(DD-490)

Have only found her 1942 scheme from the starboard side.  Would it be a mirror on the port side or colours reversed or...?

Sounds interesting.  Can anyone tell me where I can do a search on what planes were involved in this campaign?

Thats a pretty broad area overall for aircraft subjects. You may want to narrow it down by country and service. USN, USAAF, RAF Coastal Command, RN Fleet Air Arm, Luftwaffe, Soviet Naval Aviation...

In general, aircraft involved would be, for UK: Short Sunderlands, B-24 LIberators (someday I'm going to do Monograms 1/48 B-24D in RAF Coastal Command colors), Fairy Swordfish, maybe Seafires and Sea Hurricanes

For Germany FW-200 Condor, Arado-196, BV-138

For the US, TBF Avenger and F4F Wildcat

You'd have to do a little research for particular marks for particular times of the conflict. What I mentiioned were just off the top of my head.

I'm doing a Sunderland, myself, for an Anti-Submarine campaign that starts in 2010 as well.

Aurora-7- What about land based RAF Coastal Command Mosquitos & Beaufighters?  Also, there were US Helldivers, Dauntless & B-25's patrolling the US eastern coast.

I've been following this thread and if my schedule allows, I may join in later in the year.  Looks like a good group to build with.

Good points, Bob. Lots of aircraft would fit this build. And how could we forget the PBYs!!??

Feel free to drop in anytime for the build.

I've got you down, espins1.

On the German side, you can add Bf-110s and Ju-88Cs that flew long range Counter air sweeps against Allied anti sub patrols in the Bay of Biscay. The US countered with Lockeed Venturas and Harpoons when Liberators and Catalinas proved vulnerable. On the US side add: the P-38 out of Iceland, they scored the first US air to air kill of the ETO downing a Condor that was on anti shipping duty; the Kingfisher flew anti sub patrols along the Eastern Seaboard of the US- one got an early U-boat kill. Late additions to Fleet Air Arm such as teh Hellcat and Barracuda flying strikes against the Tirpitz in Norwegian fjords. You could even count RAF 617 Squadron, the Dambusters, for their work with Tallboy bombs against the Tirpitz as well.

Interesting about the P-38, Stik. It intrigued me so much I had to do some googleing to see what I could find. So far, just this image of P-38's 'somewhere in Iceland':

Wow, Stik! Not only did this P-38 shoot down a FW-200 (with the help of a P-40) it was the USAAF first victory over the Luftwaffe! And it's part of the Battle of the Atlantic!

So now I'm nuts to find images of this P-38!  It's from the 27th Fighter Squadron that was stationed in Iceland from the begining of July to the End of August, 1942. I have an early P-38 kit that I would like to build as this P-38 someday.

This paragraph is from the Wikipedia article on the P-38.

After the Battle of Midway, the USAAF began redeploying fighter groups to Britain as part of Operation Bolero, and Lightnings of the 1st Fighter Group were flown across the Atlantic via Iceland. On 14 August, Second Lieutenant Elza Shahan of the 27th Fighter Squadron, and Second Lieutenant Joseph Shaffer of the 33rd Squadron operating out of Iceland shot down a Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Kondor over the Atlantic. Shahan in his P-38F downed the Kondor; Shaffer, flying either a P-40C or a P-39, had already set an engine on fire.[45] This was the first Luftwaffe aircraft destroyed by the USAAF.[46]

I think the Lancasters of 9 and 617 Squadrons that attacked the Tirpitz is a bit of a stretch even though the ship was a threat to the Arctic convoys.  That's just me though. Stick out tongue

Don't forget the Coastal Command Ansons!  Anyone come across a kit or AM for a Mossie Mk XVIII 'Tsetse' with the Molins 57mm cannon?  No. 618 Squadron had success with them against U-boats in the Bay of Biscay.

Sorry to see you go, Bill. Feel free to jump in any time in 2010.

Stik, I think you and read the same sites.

Andy, good point about the Ansons. And I agree the Lancs are a bit of a stretch.
