(Anti) Submarine Warfare GB 2010 *CLOSED*

I'm at work right now, but before I left I painted the upper hull of the Carter.  Will unmask and should have her decalled tonight after I get home.  Bottom hull of the Seawolf is painted, will mask and paint the upper hull tonight.  Pics will have to wait 'til later.

If I built the Gato (I've heard that sucker's about 5 foot long)and had to move it, I thought about strapping it to the hood like a dead deer.  Another possibility would be to get an old 70's land yacht (Caddy, Olds etc) preferably a convertible and mount it like steer's horns ala Boss Hogg from the Dukes of Hazzard. 

lewbud, I'm right there with you. I'd love to build a 1/72 Gato, but I don't know what I'd do with it. My wife is very tolerant of my model stash, but I don't think even she would put up with a 4 foot sub bolted above the door which is the only display method that seems remotely practical

Just clearing some space, then I'll get to work on the Bell so you guys with the subs will have something to hide from.

To the guys building the the Revell kits, I don't know where you guys put that stuff.  I wanted one when they first came out, but realized I barely have room for the box let alone a built one.  Couldn't take it to a show unless I strapped to the roof.

I was able to get the non-41 U-Boat kit from Revell a couple of years ago. I was in the library of a cruise ship in the St Lawrence Seaway reading about the Battle of the Atlantic. I got so into it, I went over to one of the library's internet PC's and bought a Revell 1/72 Snowberry and 1/72 VIIC U-boat kits from web vendors on the spot.

I was doing so much research on the VIIC and found some amazing builds that I actually psyched myself out from building it. I'll tackle it next year.

That  VIIC-41's hull looks great with the rivet detail. You should have some fun weathering that up.

Ok, now for my (first) contribution to the group... (Wouldn't be much of a host if i didnt participate in all the fun now would i?).

I am going to build a 1:72 scale type VIIC/41 german Uboat; the big three foot beast from Revell... Appearantly the "normal" type VIIC is no longer offered by revell so i had to settle for the C/41. This type of Uboat was basically the same as the normal type VIIC but without the deck gun, bigger saddle tanks and reinforced hull for deeper diving.

Started on it about half a year ago and stopped after fitting the torpedo tubes and gluing the hull halves together.

Made a very gentle start on her by attaching the propeller shafts and props. Next up will be fitting the forward and rear dive planes and rudders.

Well, I am off to a flying start today. I built the hulls on my Alfa and Los Angles class SSNs. Not that that requires a whole lot of work. But to get major construction on two vessels in one day... well for  me that has not happened since both of the real ones of these subs were the cutting edge of operational submarine warfare.

Between these two boats and the other two Soviet subs I have under construction,  a nice battle of the Atlantic, 1980s style is shaping up in my collection.

Those displacement markings are called draft readings, and are used while on the surface to tell when the sub needs to blow the main ballast tanks again due to the sub settling in the water. Just in case you were interested.

Here's some pics of my builds.   They are the Hobby Boss 1/700 Seawolf and Jimmy Carter.  The parts tree of the Seawolf.

Now the Carter.

These are simple kits.  Two hull halves, a choice of sails-periscopes up or down, a choice of dive planes-extended or retracted, a three piece stand and the shrouded prop.  If anyone has these, take a 1/8 in drill bit and ream out the holes in the bottom half of the hull, as they are snap together kits this will help the fit tremendously.  For decals there is a hull number, two escape hatch markers and what look like displacement markings.  Should have the hull of the Carter fully painted later this evening.

Ok, it's official now.... Its just about January 1st everywhere on the planet so the group build has now officially started. I do hope you guys will have fun here and i am looking forward to some stunning builds

Just wanted to take the opportunity to welcome and thank everybody who has joined my little idea for a group build. Start will be in less than a week and i'm already bursting with anticipation to see all your builds come to life soon

Aurora 7,  Thanks! Im not unsatisfied with it myself although i think revells standard rust colour was a bit too purple in nature... Would have liked a more orangy tone but oh well . Never been a PE fan myself but ive seen astonishing and remarkable models really come to life with the use of aftermarket stuff.

Vetteman, As always you are a master in sweettalking [swg]. To be quite honest this is my first submarine build... Glad you liked it though. And take your time in starting your build. All in your own time and as you see fit.

I really like how Hobbyboss include a Sensor Operator station and a sonobuoy launcher in the kit ;

I also like the American flag on the tail , so i'll build mine as HSL-47 "Sabrehawks"

I've noticed they make PE pieces for my Sunderland and I'm debating if I should get them. At 1/72, the cockpit components wouldn't be very visible but the depth charge gear would.

As i've told i've been busy on a sort of preparation build for this group. My model is just finished minutes ago, apart from a dull coat of varnish. Goal of my build is trying to capture the feel of a battle worn, rusty sub that has been at sea for a while. Hope you like my work:

Used acrylics for the base colours, artists watercolors for the washes and enamels for drybrushing. Coated inbetween stages with future.

Hello Kermit,

Kindly put me down for Accurate Miniatures 1/48 TBF-1C Avenger, a torpedo bomber that participated in the Truk Lagoon Raid in 1944.  This bird was stationed on "The Big E" (USS Enterprise CV-6).

My kit is still in the box, celophane still intact.  I'll be dipping into it soon to start building the 'pit.

P.S.  I noticed the comment on "Das Boot" (a favorite of mine as well) & put together an alternate badge complete with the laughing swordfish from U-96.

Thought i might give this thread a little bump and to tell you guys i am a bit preparing for the group build by building a RoG 1:144 Type VIIC Uboat. Sofar it is going very well. I've assembled and painted it and am now busy on the most important part of a Uboat build: the weathering. Sofar, with only a black wash on it i am quite pleased with it.

Subject of my model is the legendary U96 depicted in my favourite of all movies: Das Boot.

Ofcourse i will post some pics as an appetizer for this group build as soon as possible

Found out it was the FM-1 that was in my head... Could remember it that well since the atlantic scheme i mentioned was involving an overall grey cat instead of the usual blue colors.

Aircraft based on escort carriers were very often used for ASW patrolling so there's a whole bunch of choices left for you.

Kermit thanks for the info on the Hobby Boss FM2 kit, I will look for that one too. You are right I do like the Wildcat, maybe one day I will have the full Grumman Cat collection who knows.

The avenger would certainly do Randy. Anything goes as long as its a sub or is or has been used as a sub killer or ASW patrol craft

Have a 1:48 Italeri TBM in my stash myself that would be a pleasure to do lol.

Btw i know you're fond of Wildcats, right? If you could get ur hands on the 1:48 Hobby Boss FM-1...it has an atlantic scheme and decals for it too.
