Well got some more bench time in, this builds going really fast. The quility of the fit is great, wish I could say the same about the colout note in the instructions, ie there are none except for the basic outside scheme

Richard I think I found the answer to my troubles with the wing seams on the Avenger I will let you know tomorrow if all worked out and maybe even have a picture or two to post. Funny how one can solve a model problem while working on another build isnt it

Suh-weeet helo Andrew!Stick out tongue Really love those markings; very agressive. Are they sprayed on or decals? Looks like quite the masking job to spray the tail on this scale... I am going to seriously enjoy this oneWink Glad to have you and have fun.Toast

Might wanna do a (first) helo of my own someday....

Ok finally ready to re-start on this thing. Had been trying to lower the count of the builds on my bench for some stupid reason but have come to my senses now. Anyways heres the box and bagged parts will be making the actual start tonight (I hope)

Hey peeps,

She's finally done.... Took me alot longer than expected but i am happy the way it turned out eventually. The kit itself was truly superb making me more and more interested in the IL2 Sturmovik in my stash by Italeri which is also an Accurate miniatures kit...

The instructions however (italeri took over Accurate miniatures drawings without the text they used to work along side of the instructions) were a horrible nightmare, forcing me to solve every problem myself basically. Really challenging and the model would have turned out better if i had better instructions. Nevertheless i am quite pleased overall.

Take a look for yourselves:

The airplane depicted was stationed aboard the escort carrier "Mission Bay" and operated mostly in the atlantic according to the instruction sheet. I just liked the colourful markings...

Sooo... that settles number two for this group. Thank you all for watching and commenting during the build.

Kermit ( Richard) you did that free hand ??? WOWZERS !!! She is lookin good, very well done. I do have to agree with you the detail in the bays both torpedo and landing gear is just too good to cover up. Idea maybe build a trolley for the torpedo and place it under the bay doors ?

Kermit WOW

Thanks Vette, as always, but you can be honest with me after seeing my latest WIP pics... Stubborn dutch guy as i am i have decided on doing the camo job freehanded using humbrol enamels. It reminded me of the fact that i am A.) NOT a master of airbrushing techniques and B.) I need a new nozzle on my airbrush (revell Vario).

The nozzle problem i have lately (not perfectly round at the tip nomore) caused lots of overspray that i have tried to correct both using a q tip dipped in terpentine and using the 'ole brush. And it shows....:

Trying to make the best out of it i have added a black wash overall afterwards as well as some drybrushing using a lighter blue humbrol enamel colour. Apart from that i have chosen to not occupy the bomb bay with bombs and depth charges as i really like the detail inthere. Just imagine this bird waiting for the ground crew to load her up if you will...Wink

Still i think this is the best kit i have had the pleasure of building sofar, even though the instruction sheet is a true nightmare. So,... great kit, wrong frog handling it...Hmm

Its not easy being green indeed....

Jmart and Kermit thanks guys. This build is nothing short of a challenge I am tellin ya.

Kermit WOW!!!! you masked that turret ? You are much braver then I my friend. Your Avenger is coming along very very well. Cant wait to see some paint on it, like you I am going to go for a 3 tone paint job, but dont think I will be doing any painting this week on it as I still have some wing issues.

Caribwill your subs look great, that white stripe must have been a nightmare but you pulled it off very well Bow Down I gotta try a sub one day me thinks.

Lwebud thank you sir. We are having phun building the Avengers, really we are Stick out tongue

Caribwill, Great work on your submarines! I am really starting to like these 1/700 kits. The white "pinstripe" came out great too, i know how you can seriously get frustrated masking and spraying white stripes. Well done indeed. Your builds will be added to the mainpage as soon as i get time for it after workWink

As for me... I actually managed to get that turret installedCool Bit tricky and fiddly but with some careful swearing and angry looks towards my turret it finally surrendered and went inDevil

Only got the undercarriage assembly in front of me before i can take out the airbrush...yayyyyyStick out tongue Thanks for watching and commenting.

Now that Randy reached the masking phase of his build i felt increasingly frustrated for not finding the inspiration and enthousiasm to do the masking on my Avenger. Have to admit that turret is very tedious to mask and like Randy it caused me to postpone the choreBig Smile

Luckily i found my own "mojo" back today and found a way to mask the canopies, turret and finalise the pre-painting assembly work on this gorgeous kit:

Hope to stay on track now. Would really love to finish this build up before i leave on a six week trip end May. Thanks for watching gentsYesSmile

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement guys. JMart I don't remember what happened to my first build of this kit, it was just too many years ago LOL

Got a bit more work done so here are some WIP pictures.

Had some huge gaps at the wing roots so I slid some plasticard in the gaps and used Tamiya's liquid glue because it wicks so well. Both top and bottom wing roots got the same treatment.

A quick trim with my trusty hobby knife and the gaps were gone, a great idea I got from someone here on the forum.

Next were the outer wing panels, what a nightmare those were. Nothing wanted to line up or fit at all, I finally threatened them with my trusty 3 foot crowbar and they went on in a fashion of sorts. I still have some work to do on them. Anyway thats where it is at now hopefully I will get more work done during the week.

Work was slowed down Sunday due an invasion of my " MANCAVE" check out the posting on the aircraft thread. I had a blast !!!

Richard – very nice WIP on the Avenger.

Randy – good job on that old Avenger… yes ,I also had that one as a kid, it “helped” me sink (blow up with firecrackers) my two IJN carrier fleet in a recreation of the Midway battle..lol.

Glad to hear about your mojo coming back to you. My avenger has been hard for me lately to continue on as well so let's just blame the aircraft type LOL.

Now, off to the hobby dungeon with you!Propeller

Guys I tell ya getting that worry outta my head really did the trick Geeked Got the rest of the wing center section on and the Avenger is now at this very moment sitting on the gear legs. Hopefully I will get the wing root gaps filled and the outer wing panels glued on her tomorrow. And if that isn't enough while that is drying I have my air racer Miss America almost ready for paint. Cant believe how such a simple thing could throw me for such a loop. Thanks for the encouragement guys Bow Down

Finally got the modeling mojo back Stick out tongueYeah

shhhhhh.... i won't tell a soul...Angel

Masking canopies (i agree) is one of the most tedious things in our hobby and can get even irritating if your model resembles a greenhouse, just like the avengerWink Don't worry about it and it doesnt look that bad RandySmile

Found out that the best way that works for me is to mask the entire thing, burnish the tape down so the framework is clearly visible and then take a sharp, fresh knife, carefully and slowly cutting along the rims. Don't push too hard as you basically want to cut the paper, not the plastic. Minor scratch marks wont be a problem as they will be right along the edges wich will fill with paint anyways.

I commend you for your persistence with this build and hope that, now the masking part is done, your case of modelers block will lift soonWink

Very nice work Vetteman. Really, sometimes I get hung up too and the solution is really to keep it simple.

I have a new ASW subject about half done....coincidence maybe?

Kermit I too have been hung up on my build so don,t be feelin bad about it.

Bondoman all I can say is WOWZERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! you have nailed that build for sure. Very impressive and well done.

Guys thought I would give you a bit of an update on my Avenger build. I kept looking at the turret and thinking about the masking I will have to do when I paint it. The more I thought about how I was going to mask it the more nervous I became sooooooooo. I spent a couple of days splitting the rear of the fuse apart again removing the turret and hand painting the frame on it.  So here is a pic of my wobbly handed frame painting should be worth a giggle or two LOL

Now that I have gotten over this worry maybe I can get on with the build Stick out tongue again and get the turret back in and the fuse reglued Huh?

Bondoman,

Sorry i have not responded to your post earlier even though i read it the day you posted it. You had me clicking on those pictures to make em biggerWink Stunning and clean work of an aircraft i've never seen before. You can be proud of that one. Heck, i wouldn't mind you joining in here with something similarStick out tongue

Must admit i have not been really busy on my avenger the past week other than masking the glasswork, assembling the turret and trying to get the bomb bay doors to get where i want em. I think, from looking at the research pics, that the doors in opened position should connect with the fuselage on the outside but my first two attempts to accomplish this have been quite dissapointing. I may have to be cruel to my model and put my modeling knife into it and use CA to get it right. WIP boys....... I am busy on it but things are going (alot) slower than people are accustomed to with me...Zip it!

Also i am busy for other group(s), taking even more time. Bear with me please.

Great looking projects, guys. Gotta build a TBF one day. Here's a new one, not my assignment I know, but in the meantime...

The Airfix 1/72 Sunderland Mark III, updated to a SAAF GR5 circa the mid 1950's.

35 Squadron SAAF was formed on 2 February 1945 by renumbering South African manned 262 Squadron RAF which was operating Catalinas from Congella (Durban harbour) and St Lucia on the Natal coast and from Langebaan on the West Cape coast. In April 1945 the squadron received the first of 16 Sunderland GR 5s, but peace prevented the squadron from going to the Far East and the Sunderlands were used for ferrying South African troops home from Cairo.

The Squadron continued to operate the Sunderland on anti-submarine patrols from Congella until 27 September 1957 when the squadron re-equipped with the Shackleton MR3 and moved to Cape Town.(hint)

A classic oldie. Replaced the Bristols and their cowlings with Pratts and the proper props from a B-24.
MAV decals and beauties too. Clear bits from Falcon, Quickboost gun barrels

ASV III antennas under the wings, a searchlight in the nose, and away we go.

Richard thanks for your kind words and encouragement. This kit is "OLD SCHOOL " early 70s Monogram, the only recessed lines are the control surfaces and the cowl. I do have to start watching ebay for one of the kits you have as you are right it is gorgeous and AM really isn't needed.

I am planning on doing blue over gray on this build, however that could change once I get to the point of painting as I do like the 3 tone schemes a lot.

Not to worry Richard I will get my head screwed on right and get building again soon.

Randy,

She's coming along nicely there buddy. Those panellines look like they are engraved, not recessed right? I am so so looking forward to see how you will paint her eventually as i am right now selecting and deciding on the shades of paint i am going to use. Kinda scared but i think this three tone scheme i am going to do will be sprayed freehand, something that scares the sh*t outta me every time lol. And yes, the number and masking of the clear parts are giving me nightmares just thinking about it lmao...

As for your question: i have never scratched a thing in my life except for my wooden ship adventures so yes this is all OOB that you seeWink Gorgeous innit?

Oh, and if you're in a modelers block phase: don' t worry and don't force anything. This is not a contest and i know very well how you can sometimes "just not be in the mood". If you wanna step away from it for awhile, by all means do what you feel is right my friendSmile

Kermit your Avenger is coming along nicely, very nicely indeed. The engine really looks good Richard, did you add bits and pieces to it or is that OOB ? That looks like a very nice kit my friend. cant wait to see her Kermified.

Guess I gotta answer Kermit's ( Richard's) WIP pictures with some of my own Big Smile I have been in a bit of a modeling funk of late, kinda sit down at the bench and zone out for some reason. But I have managed to get some work done in my Avenger. So here ya go

The turret is going to be a real problem to mask as it has to go in before the fuse halves are glued together Bang Head. But I will come up with something I hope.

The wings were badly warped but I think the use of my trusty heat gun and a bunch of clamps solved the problem.

Just had to show off my figures, I am really pleased with the way they came out.

Some more WIP picture fun for you to watch. Spent a whole hour yesterday just to attach the fuselage halves to eachother because of the sheer number of detailed parts inside that needed to be correctly lined up but i managed with lots of patienceWink

Wonderful surprise to see and something i never encountered in all my modeling years: SEAMLESS wing/ fuselage joints! The wings go in " slots" molded into the fuselage so the parts overlap. Hats off to Accurate miniatures i have to sayBow DownYes. The fuselage seam will have to be puttied and sanded like usual. Less work, more fun{:D]

Also completed the engine. This is one of those kits that just fall together and also provide for lots and lots of painting pleasure and attention to detail...

Next jobs will be the bomb bay area and ofcourse filling and sanding. More news to follow soonSmile Thanks for watching gents.

Don' t worry about going too fast on this build... I spend alot of time trying to accentuate all the OOB detail goodies and apart from that i'm gonna start on the Revell 1:32 Junkers JU88 bomber for the upcoming Battle of Britain GBWink That baby will probably ask for alot of attention as wellBig Smile

Ok,... now that my Avenger is at the moment my only WIP project i spent some time with it again tonight after waiting for Randy to make a gentle start on his build. Most interior work apart from the ball turret, wich is to be installed later on, is now completed so i can start on joining the fuselage halves and attaching the wings.

Hope you guys like it
