Julez,

That is a fine submarine there! Did you ude preshading on it? I like the subtleness of the effect your weathering technique had. I did build the U99 kit too and remember having a blast with itBig Smile It might not be the youngest kit outthere but it still kicks *ssWink Well done on a fine modelYes

Eatthis,

Looks like you will be busy for awhile with all those builds going onWink Like your taste though. What brand of 1/32 spit is that?

N E ways....

Been a bit under the weather the past few days and tried to work on my projects as much as i could whenever i had the energy... Like the afforementioned websites explained i modeled bowwaves with modeling clay and filled in the foamy bits inbetween with ordinary putty. I think i can start thinking about priming the whole lot and paint itSmile

Being busy with the clay and putty getting your hands dirty like that really takes you back to your childhood LOL. Having lotsa fun with this one... Thanks for peeking.

Richard

Thought i might post an update on what i intended to do with my tiny submarine...

As i have told you guys already i felt inspired by the FSM special gallery edition with the waterbased diorama's in it.

So when i came back from my holiday i started doing some research and this particular webpage kind of got me started as it looked both logical and doable:

http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2002/11/stuff_eng_tech_sea_water.htm

So last week io went into town and got me a photoframe with a decent deep rim, some plaster of paris, modeling clay and modeling putty. Tamiya taped the frame as to not make it dirty during the plaster pouring:

Last friday when i had the time i took the aluminum foil as per the directions on the website and crumbled it up and applied it into the frame:

After this i mixed up some plaster of paris and poured it into my assembly. After an hour i flipped over the whole bunch and this is what came out. Pretty pleased sofar...Smile:

It has now been drying up for 24 hours but i will give it another 1 or two days like the website states... Thanks for watching guysWink

By all means take your time during this phase 68GT! The sanding and filling, like masking canopies is stuff that is not that much fun to do yet very important. Better let it sit for a day until you feel like doing it instead of struggling through it and finding out it wasn't a very good job afterwards...

I'm sure you will get it right budyWink Hang on inthere.

Kind of stalled on the P-3C because I just can't get the seems they way I want them.  I just hate filling and sanding and filling and sanding just like doing body work on an old car.

 I'm getting there though!Indifferent

I would have some photos but the camera took a dump.

On Ed's bench, ???

WIP:

Assembly, basic painting, black wash and a generous coat of semigloss later. Wanted this boat to look "wet", hence the semigloss.

Once everything has been cured enough i plan on decalling it and add some rust accents and this baby will be ready for my dio. Thanks for watchingWink

Strange how a visit to your LHS can sometimes help you decide on something completely different...

Found this little but great kit waiting for me:

Yes, this one is 1:350th scaleDrinks. Cute innit?? Just 10 bucks too... Measuring a stunning 8 inches it is a great candidate for an experiment attempting a first water dio....Eats

Anyways... The usual sprue and decal pics. Note the Bic ballpoint for scale reference:

And impatient as i am i stated on her right away. After an hour or so gluing some enormous pieces i came up with this sofar. (tower has been dryfitted for the pics):

More small news to follow soonWink

Hey guys,

Just got back from my holiday yesterday, fighting a monster of a jetlag but otherwise pretty much alive...Wink Had the greatest time ever and saw and did too much stuff to be able to express in a few lines. I will just say i do love the USABig Smile

Ok, back to business...

Took a few moments to catch up on stuff and update the first post with Randy's and Konigwolf's completed builds. Stunning work gents!

Bought that gallery issue of FSM while i was in the states and fell in love with the waterbased dio's that were in it, especially the dio of the Italian cruiser "Fiume" really caught my attention. It made me think about attempting a small dio for this group but not seriously planning something as of yet... Who knows

I will take a few to decide on my next build; more news to follow...

Again, hats off to everyone. It is an honor and delight to be able to put such beautiful work in the gallery post. Thank you all for your contribution to my little GB Yes

Just checking RichardYes Looking forward too seein some more of your work....Hey i hope you dont mind if i add a little artistic license to my Welly and add a little flak damage to the tail.....Lets just say that it had a close encounter with a couple of surfaced U-Boats on the Bay of Biscay at the time when they were ordered to stay on the surface and fight it out.....

Vetteman, i know how much this build has cost you headaches and seeing this build finished like you have done is simply stunning. What started out as a bad fitting old kit turned out gorgeous. Well done my friend! The three tone came out better than mine and the added crew only enhances the whole thing. Three cheers for you buddy! Love the fading on the wings in the second pic too.

DittoRichard....  Vette, Outstanding work buddyYesYesYes love the wing shading.....

The research/ history part of the hobby is at least as much fun as the build itself for me too. It only makes you want to build a certain model even moreWink

Can't really download and upload on this crappy connection but i will add your build to the front page as soon as i can.

Did i hear someone say helo.....?Whistling

Hey guys I am calling this TBF-3 Avenger finished..................finally. I want to thank you all for the encouragement I got along the way and I cant forget our fearless leader Kermit, aka Richard. Something else that kept me from tossing this kit was about 3 weeks ago, I decided to check on markings and find out where this aircraft was during her service. What I found was quite interesting, this ole girl got around some.

The Rocky Mountain Wing's TBM-3E Avenger original logbooks show that it was accepted by the US Navy on June 1, 1945 at the Norfolk NAS and assigned to the VT-75 Squadron - the "Fish Hawks". It was transferred in 1947 to VT-82 Squadron - the "Devil's Diplomats" and Naval Air Reserve Training at Los Alamitos in southern California.

In 1950 it was lend/leased to the Royal Canadian Navy with only 546 total hours flown. As with many other American aircraft, the Canadians renamed the the Avenger type to become the Tarpon. Our aircraft was part of 125 TBMs to be converted by the Fairey Aviation Company of Canada, Ltd. to "modern" anti-submarine warfare roles. These aircraft received an extensive number of ASW modifications, including improved radar, electronic countermeasures (ECM) equipment, and sonobuoys. The modified Avengers were then re-designated AS-3. The upper ball turret was replaced with a sloping glass canopy (seen at right) that was better suited for observation duties. The observer was thus seated facing forward.

TBM 53503 flew in the RCN 881 Squadron from the carrier HMCS Magnificent and marked as sub hunter "ABK", "AB*P" and later "315" as their numbering system changed over her years of duty. She also flew in this role as part of the flypast for the newly coronated Queen Elizabeth II's Royal Navy Review at Spithead on June 16, 1953. TBM 53503 is documented as being Struck Off Charge on January 1, 1958.

After her RCN military career ended in 1958, TBM 53503 was an aerial insecticide applicator from 1963 to 1970 for the Simsbury Flying Service in Simsbury, CT as N6583D. Acquired by the CAF in 1970 where she was painted as VT-10's "white 82" with a tri-color Navy scheme for the CV-10 Yorktown, but still lacked the characteristic dorsal gun turret. She flew with the CAF Ghost Squadron until 1981 in this configuration. During this time, her movie debut can be seen in the first five minutes of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind as directed by Steven Spielburg - hint: she is the one whose engine runs!

From 1981 until mid-1985, the Avenger sat outside in Arizona waiting for her next duty assignment and in desperate need of repair and maintenance on various systems. A new CAF Unit, the "Rocky Mountain Squadron", was formed in Grand Junction Colorado in 1981. This unit petitioned CAF headquarters for the TBM's reassignment to them in 1984. On January 17, 1985 TBM 53503 was officially assigned to the new squadron. She was flown on a ferry permit from Mesa, Arizona to Grand Junction, Colorado in that February to begin an extensive restoration lasting over four years.

By July of 1989, she was once again "ready for duty" - complete with the installation of the dorsal gun turret, and a new paint scheme - that of a TBM assigned to VT-84, also known as the "Wolf Gang" squadron, aboard the USS Bunker Hill, CV-17. This squadron was the first to attack Tokyo on February 16 & 17, 1945 and the colorful yellow cowling was adopted to enhance identification as "friendly" when returning to the fleet from their raid.

Her first CAF AIRSHO was in Harlingen, Texas in 1990, and since has been on the airshow circuit promoting the goals on objectives of the CAF. The Rocky Mountain Squadron grew to obtain official CAF "Wing" status.

Anyway I hope you dont mind the history as I said I found it interesting. Here are the finished pictures I did have some fun taking them and hope you like her.

Had to show off my first figures ya know

One with the motor running for ya.

And this next one is for our MIA Fearless Leader Kermit or maybe it should be AWOL ?? Clown

.
