well I have made some progress on my 2 subs.   All that is left are the few decals.  Anyone know a way to put them on that does not involve painting a clearcoat of future, decaling, and then a flat coat?  I like the paint as it is now and hate to add 2 more layers......

Ok here goes... Almost two weeks since the last post so it was just about time to save this thread from the second page...

I have finished the "beast"!!. Took me the better part of a year (since purchase) but i am very pleased with the results myself. I have even added the gun barrel "plugs" like Randy suggested (thank you; looks great!)

After i thought the rust looked "rusty" enough i have finished up with some last minute drybrushing and chalks and coated the sub with a matte varnish to tone down all the layers of future. It was getting a bit too shiny for my taste.

But i can rabble on for hours about the subject...just see for yourself i would say:) I give you.... U-995.

This rustbucket cost me a full box (200) of q-tips by the way...just to name one thing...

Feel free to comment about stuff you like to see different... This sub is right now how i had it in my head at the start of the build. Hope you guys enjoyed my work

Kermit WOW ! you have taken Kermifying to a new level with this U-Boat buddy.  The weathering is perfect, looks like the old worn out  ships I have seen moored off of Long Beach Harbor many years ago. You must have spent as much time weathering as you did building on this one because it is HUGE. Looks like it took up almost a king size bed sheet as a backdrop. Well done my friend, I hope, and you should very well be, quite proud of this build.

Richard do I see a Sub-mission ( punn intended) to the reader gallery in FSM ??? It belongs there ya know.

I have a Revell 1/72 Mk III Swordfish I would like to build as precurser/weathering experimenter for a 32 scale swordfish I'm about to start and you are giving me the perfect excuse. I assume 20+ U-boat kills class them as Anti-submarine

Thank you thank you thank you LOL, you are as always too kind I developed a hate/ love relationship with this model over time; starting, shelving and restarting it again for a long time but always worked on it with the very best i had in me. It stands on my shelf in the knowledge that i couldn' t have done it any better. Might (MIGHT) just apply for the gallery with this one...

Ok guys we need some prop driven air thingys going on here I dug out my Avenger last night washed it then did a bit of dry fitting. Found a number of small problems but as you will see the left wing does have a warp in it that will need some attention along with the usual Old Monogram fit issues. This is big for a single engine aircraft too so it should be a lot of fun to build. Oh and this build will mark my first attempt at figure painting so wish me luck. I will prolly need it LOL Anyway here are a couple of pictures.

PS the canopy seems to have a very good fit and is surprisingly clear for this old of a kit.

OK peep's heres my 1/72 Revell Fairey Swordfish III

The basics of the Kit

OK This kit has a very basic cockpit, two seats on a platform each glued to the side walls and a machine gun for the two crew figures provided. So  thought I'd have some fun with my first serious scratching. Below Are the results.

First I photocopied my 1/32 swordfish sprue that has cockpit framing, then broke out a candle and stretched some sprue, then with some cutting and gluing overlaying the photocopy I built my own 1/72 scale frame, added some platforms, glued in seats and painted. After that I made small IP and photocopied the IP from the 32 decals at the correct ratio and cure at glued them on. then made a small radioto tack on the back.

Next the will be gluing a slighty warped fuselage together

Konigwolf13 that is some very nice scratch work and excellent for your first serious attempt, wish my first shot at it had come out half as well  And in 1/72 scale no less. Cant wait to see more of your Swordfish. Again very nice scratch work there Andrew. 

Houston we have a problem...

Well test fitted the fuselage togther and noted a warpage of the aircrafts nose. So I started gluing slowly at the tail and got 3/4 of the way along no drama. Applied hot water and was able to get the bottom half of the of the nose complete but hot water wouldnt help the upper half. OK maybe carful application of heat from one of desk lamps, goes OK first time get the front cockpit aligned, then go back and disaster strikes, left to long when get distracted.

So now at a conumdrum. This kits a write off and I really want to do this build as I'd been eyeing it off since the announcement just didnt have an excuse (or suitible project). So off to the LHS on Friday see what I can get. If I can pick up another swordfish I will otherwise I'll prolly go a destroyer or something, will let you know then.

While its a PITA I dont really mind, cheap enough to replace and learning experience doing what I did while not getting so far into it to get really tick'd off.

That's really sucky my friend. I happen to have seen this kit before and i know how some parts are a real PITA. A swordfish in 1/72th scale with all the rigging is imho selftorture anyways... Luckily it is indeed a very cheap kit so it doesn't hurt the old wallet that much. Just take a deep breath and start a new one or something else. Sh*t happens....

Konig13 man thats a bummer, sorry to hear what happened. I hope you were able to save the cockpit for the replacement build.

Kermit/Richard - Yeah I thought it was a bit sucky but not really bothered to much, suprised myself really, good excuse to go shopping :)

Vetteman - Cant save the cockpit as from the seat fwd got a case of the droops. Again not bothered as I know if I repeat the kit I can do an even better job :)

Went round a few hobby shops yesturday nothing going in a suitable range to replace the poor melted swordfish, so  I just orded a Hobby Boss 1/72 RN Lynx online.

Well guys its been slow going but I have one WIP picture to share with you. Its not much, but it is a first for me. My very first attempt at figure painting is finished, although I still need to add a dullcoat to them.

The kit itself does it turns out have some problems to be dealt with like warped wing panels, but aI think I may have that beat, we will see in the next few days.

WELL DONE! Those little guys don't look all that bad My first pilot dude didn't come out that clean LOL. I am impressed my friend. And what is this...?? You started on the TBF?? Oh goodie goodie, now were gonna have some fun as i will continue on mine as well ASAP. Trying to tackle a wildcat for another GB this weekend. Fading and weathering these blue schemes are a totally different ball park...

Richard I thank you sir for your kind words. Oh and hey don't get all fired up and in a hurry on your build, you know how slow I am LOL. I just dont see you having any trouble with blue shades.

To fade my Corsair and Wildcat I made a very thin white wash type of thing with no soap in it and airbrushed it over the  blue after the decals were on and sealed. What I did for the wash was I filled my airbrush bottle ( a 2 oz bottle)half full of distilled water then mixed in a few drops of white at a time till it looked like skim milk, and just fogged it on. Took 3 or 4 coats before I started seeing how it was fading the finish. I liked doing it that way because it went so slow that I had a bunch of control over the fading. Be sure and wait 10 or 15 minutes between coats so it will be dry and you can see what is going on with the fading, I found if the surface is just a little damp even, that it hides the white a great deal.

Don' t worry about going too fast on this build... I spend alot of time trying to accentuate all the OOB detail goodies and apart from that i'm gonna start on the Revell 1:32 Junkers JU88 bomber for the upcoming Battle of Britain GB That baby will probably ask for alot of attention as well

Ok,... now that my Avenger is at the moment my only WIP project i spent some time with it again tonight after waiting for Randy to make a gentle start on his build. Most interior work apart from the ball turret, wich is to be installed later on, is now completed so i can start on joining the fuselage halves and attaching the wings.

Some more WIP picture fun for you to watch. Spent a whole hour yesterday just to attach the fuselage halves to eachother because of the sheer number of detailed parts inside that needed to be correctly lined up but i managed with lots of patience

Wonderful surprise to see and something i never encountered in all my modeling years: SEAMLESS wing/ fuselage joints! The wings go in " slots" molded into the fuselage so the parts overlap. Hats off to Accurate miniatures i have to say. The fuselage seam will have to be puttied and sanded like usual. Less work, more fun{:D]

Also completed the engine. This is one of those kits that just fall together and also provide for lots and lots of painting pleasure and attention to detail...

Next jobs will be the bomb bay area and ofcourse filling and sanding. More news to follow soon Thanks for watching gents.

Kermit your Avenger is coming along nicely, very nicely indeed. The engine really looks good Richard, did you add bits and pieces to it or is that OOB ? That looks like a very nice kit my friend. cant wait to see her Kermified.

Guess I gotta answer Kermit's ( Richard's) WIP pictures with some of my own I have been in a bit of a modeling funk of late, kinda sit down at the bench and zone out for some reason. But I have managed to get some work done in my Avenger. So here ya go

The turret is going to be a real problem to mask as it has to go in before the fuse halves are glued together . But I will come up with something I hope.

The wings were badly warped but I think the use of my trusty heat gun and a bunch of clamps solved the problem.

Just had to show off my figures, I am really pleased with the way they came out.

She's coming along nicely there buddy. Those panellines look like they are engraved, not recessed right? I am so so looking forward to see how you will paint her eventually as i am right now selecting and deciding on the shades of paint i am going to use. Kinda scared but i think this three tone scheme i am going to do will be sprayed freehand, something that scares the sh*t outta me every time lol. And yes, the number and masking of the clear parts are giving me nightmares just thinking about it lmao...

As for your question: i have never scratched a thing in my life except for my wooden ship adventures so yes this is all OOB that you see Gorgeous innit?

Oh, and if you're in a modelers block phase: don' t worry and don't force anything. This is not a contest and i know very well how you can sometimes "just not be in the mood". If you wanna step away from it for awhile, by all means do what you feel is right my friend

Richard thanks for your kind words and encouragement. This kit is "OLD SCHOOL " early 70s Monogram, the only recessed lines are the control surfaces and the cowl. I do have to start watching ebay for one of the kits you have as you are right it is gorgeous and AM really isn't needed.

I am planning on doing blue over gray on this build, however that could change once I get to the point of painting as I do like the 3 tone schemes a lot.

Not to worry Richard I will get my head screwed on right and get building again soon.

The Airfix 1/72 Sunderland Mark III, updated to a SAAF GR5 circa the mid 1950's.

35 Squadron SAAF was formed on 2 February 1945 by renumbering South African manned 262 Squadron RAF which was operating Catalinas from Congella (Durban harbour) and St Lucia on the Natal coast and from Langebaan on the West Cape coast. In April 1945 the squadron received the first of 16 Sunderland GR 5s, but peace prevented the squadron from going to the Far East and the Sunderlands were used for ferrying South African troops home from Cairo.

The Squadron continued to operate the Sunderland on anti-submarine patrols from Congella until 27 September 1957 when the squadron re-equipped with the Shackleton MR3 and moved to Cape Town.(hint)

A classic oldie. Replaced the Bristols and their cowlings with Pratts and the proper props from a B-24.
MAV decals and beauties too. Clear bits from Falcon, Quickboost gun barrels

ASV III antennas under the wings, a searchlight in the nose, and away we go.

Sorry i have not responded to your post earlier even though i read it the day you posted it. You had me clicking on those pictures to make em bigger Stunning and clean work of an aircraft i've never seen before. You can be proud of that one. Heck, i wouldn't mind you joining in here with something similar

Must admit i have not been really busy on my avenger the past week other than masking the glasswork, assembling the turret and trying to get the bomb bay doors to get where i want em. I think, from looking at the research pics, that the doors in opened position should connect with the fuselage on the outside but my first two attempts to accomplish this have been quite dissapointing. I may have to be cruel to my model and put my modeling knife into it and use CA to get it right. WIP boys....... I am busy on it but things are going (alot) slower than people are accustomed to with me...

Also i am busy for other group(s), taking even more time. Bear with me please.
