A F6F Hellcat , Pilotless Drone

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/9682/picture036t.jpg

I don't think there any 1/72 scale Hellcat kits that come with wing folds , otherwise I think would have been tempted to build one ?

                           John .

Question: what were these pilotless drones for? I've never seen one, in person or in a photo, and I'm curious

Here's a closer pic of the F-80 and naplam tank , I've about given up trying to use the scanner , so I used my digital camera instead ..

Here is another interesting pic for anyone who might be thinking of building something different ;

Thanks John!

Those are great scans. It brings up two points about napalm tanks-1) in this particular case, the tank is painted yellow, 2) the fuse protruding from where the filler cap normally sits.

Now that I have the turret textured (which did not show up as well as I had hoped in the pics) it will proceed quickly with the rest of the turret. I need to add the cables and linkage boxes for the smoke grenade launchers, and the scratch build a rack and replace the kit jerry can that goes on the turret rear escape hatch.

I resolve to do more model building this week! (right after this afternoon's AMPS meeting)Wink

Your tank is coming along nicely stik ; Someone mentioned earlier about naplam tanks on aircraft ; after seven attempts to scan a pic , I managed to get this pic..

Aaron, the F9F is coming along great! And yes you are right about the compactness of that bird. Not much bigger than many late WWII fighters. At a local park here they have one that was donated by the Marines that kids could play on when I was growing up. Unsafe as all hades by todays nanny state standards, but lots of fun for the young boy with the active imagination. These days it has been covered in concrete and now all those slippery surfaces and sharp edge issues have been addressed...Hmm

John, you continue to amaze me with your amount of work! I really love to see the Sea Fury. My favorite prop job I have ever seen up close in the air and on the ground. The engine sound is just amazing- so much power in it. I cant wait to see that one built!

As for me, yesterday I was able to get a few coats of liquid cement on the turret and used a stiff nylon brush to replicate the cast armor surface. Then I cleared up the lower hull motorization hole issue with a single sheet of thin styrene. Much quicker and less measuring and cutting rather than filling each hole individually. (especially since I really doubt that anyone but me will see the hull bottom)Wink

kit turret before texturing

and after

and the hull bottom fix- so easy even an ex grunt can do it...Whistling

Ok, it is starting to look like a plane. I'm a little surprised to see what a compact plane the Panther is. No major issues, the wings were a bit fiddly to get lined up but not too bad.

John

The large white side code is apparently "WM - 16".  Another pic I've seen with this "WM" code carries the squadron designator "MAMRON - 33".   (Marine Aircraft Maintenance Squadron ?), or it could possibly be "H&MS - 33", depending on the time period.  This appears in smaller letters under the word "MARINES", not distinct enough to really tell.  Standard markings would include the model and Bureau Number block in smaller numbers (3 inch / 6 inch, I think), farther aft on the boom, but it's not visible at all in this shot.  Some HO3S choppers also carried the message "ABANDON CHUTE" on both sides of the belly below the door, facing outward.  Again, that's not visible here.

Horay! I got the scanner to work.  A couple of these are for John.  I hope they help.  The other, I just included because I want to buy and build the RoG Privateer in this scheme.  One roadblock, called the "wife".

Since I haven't been able to paint lately.  It has been way too hot and humid here.  I am kind of stuck on my builds I was trying to finish up on before starting the Corsair.  So, I want to start it tomorrow.  With any luck, I will make photographable progress.

Cheers,

Greg

I added some more weight to the insides of the engine nacelles and the A-26B Invader sits nicely on her landing gear , the invader is ready for some putty along with two P-51's and two jeeps are ready for assembly after airbrushing olive drab to all the parts seperatly

I glued the windows into the second [replacement] H03S-1 fuselage halves , however I continued wet sanding the first H03S-1 windows and I think I may have gotten rid of all the superglue that fogged the windows , so I can still use the original fuselage halves . Seeing I started the second H03S-1, I was thinking of building her as a USMC bird , I found this pic on the net...

I can borrow some MARINES lettering from my Italeri H-19 kit stash , but I can't quite make out what other lettering/numbers are on the USMC helicopter in the pic above ???

OK, youa re all updated now.. Along with as many of Helo's that I could find out of all those posts... I dont know if it's my modelers ADD that keeps me from knuckling down and finishing a kit or what. I have had plenty of time these past couple weeks and just not much interest in building save for a few sessions.

I should be down for:

1/72 Academy Banshee

1/72 Italeri UH-19

1/72 UH-13 Soiux (this is the new one.

Helo... I don't know when you sleep... you are a kit building animal! If you were local here I know of only one other guy who builds so prodigiously! (Duke Maddog take a bowWink) Keep the updates coming...

I guess I'm in a bit of a unique situation as I'm a full time carer for my elderly parents and I'm home 24/7 . Most of my building I do between 5.30am -7.30 am and from 7.30pm each night . Most of the day is taken up in the carer roll , mum has parkinsons and my farther suffers from cronic pain from shingles , he's had for the past ten years . Sometimes I can sneek in half an hour here and there during the day but there is always lot's of housework to do , washing , meals , lot's of different medication , sanitary issue's and the like ; Doctors appointments and prescriptions to organize , however all in all I still have a lot more time at the workbench than a lot of you guy's so I don't take my modeling time for granted .

Lot's of times I've been at the bench and looked up at the clock and it's 9.00pm and next time I look it's almost midnight , where did the time go ?

I was seaching around the net for AM or resin parts for the S-51 , I thought someone might have made stretcher pods as an accessory when I found that web site listing the Aerodrome kits , pitty their not available an Army H-5G version would have gone nicely with the Navy H03S-1

Anyway back to the bench or bed ??? Sleep

I have one of the Aerodrom kits, the third one down. It looks decent, kind of like a Matchbox or Airfix kit. The canopy is unusual, it has 4 fuselage halves, 2 clear and 2 solid, you are supposed to cut the canopy off of the clear fuselage put it on the solid fuselage. I don't know where to get another one, I haven't been able to find any information that the company is still in business.

Hey Guy's ;

Has anyone ever heard of a model kit company called Aerodrom , from Poland ???

They apparently produce three 1/72 scale S-51 helicopter kits ; There's a British Westland Dragonfly , A Sikorskt H-5G with strecher pods and a Sikorsky H03S-1 Navy bird with additional fuel tanks .

Here's the link to the web site I found

http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://w4u.am.lodz.pl/~piokas/kits/ep04pud.jpg&imgrefurl=http://w4u.am.lodz.pl/~piokas/texty/aerodran.html&usg=__VIA6gCGt77pn6gF4FF4O9BdOqJY=&h=572&w=944&sz=55&hl=en&start=28&tbnid=O4fjpGuESgH4pM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=148&prev=/images%3Fq%3DSikorsky%2BDragonfly%2BH-5G%26start%3D20%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1

I checked Squadron .com and Hannants in the UK but they dont have a listing for aerodrom kits .

Stik, the Centurion is coming along nicely

Scorpio, nice job on the Corsair.  Pit looks good.

Daywalker, can't wait to see some progress pics of the Pershing.

Helo.......you are a GB animal.  Nice job so far on all your kits.

I plan on starting the HRS-2 this week.  I got a B-1B spread out all over the place.  I have to make some room.

Hey Stik: I just picked up a Sioux! Please add that to my build list! It will be the Italeri 1/72 scale kit. That makes 3 for me! I hope I can get them all done by the end of this build! Thank goodness this is for 1 year. I have another GB that is almost finished....and do to space for building I have to focus on 1 at a time.

I looked through my couple books on th eAir War in Korea and didn't see any pics of any aircraft carrying the Tiny Tim. I know they were used though. Wiki said the Corsair, Avenger, Helldiver and I believe the Hellcat were all carriers in WWII. Another site showed an F-84 with a couple, so thourough research will pay off here. As far as the color of the napalm tanks, again inconclusive. There are a couple pics and a profile showing yellow ones, but they were on USAF planes and the napalm tanks lined up in front of and hung on USN/USMC planes seemed to be in the sea blue and some with painted noses back about 18-24" in yellow. Again thourough research is the key. HTH somewhat!!Yes

Aaron your office on the Panther is looking great!!!

Frank, can't wait to see your target WIP pics!!!

from what i have seen, I dont think there was a hard fast rule about painting tanks for napalm use yellow. many photos show them in their original nmf or sea blue finish

The Tiny Tim was primarily a USN / USMC weapon, but apparently was also used on the F-84. The set I have has a blunt point for use on the F-84 and a more pointed nose for naval use.

I can't find any reference to it being used on any USN / USMC jets, just the F4U, F6F and AD-1.

I do have some tanks I saved to do as napalm, I understand the tanks were painted yellow when used for napalm.

A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!  Another armor!!! Yes  I have commited but I can not start until I finish my build for another GB.  Can't wait to start my M24 Chaffee later this summer!  Well, somebody has to build that little tank because those were first to arrive Korea from Japan when the war broke.

I am under the impression that the Tiny Tim was only a USN/USMC air to ground weapon. I have only seen pics of them on prop jobs F4Us and ADs. They would look neat on a Panther I bet. The 5" HVARs should be aluminum with OD warheads. No red to be seen on them. Some fuel tanks on the inboard pylons as either fuel or loaded with Napalm might look good too for a CAS mission. The only difference is when filled with Napalm, the fuel tank would have a fuse screwed in where the filler cap is normally seen. In 1/72 a sort piece of styrene rod would do the job.
