Hi Stik ;

I just picked up some 1/72 Hi Decal F-4D Phantom II decals ....

Would a ROK F-4D be allowed into the GB ;

The F-4D is fitted with aTDU-10B towed aerial target for gunnery practice .

Anyway it's just a thought , the phantom is from the 1990 time frame .

I'll post this pic of the F-16's and A-10A to remedy this issue .

Hey John, I guess I'm helping keep your GB at the top of the pile right now - I swear, I have the EXACT SAME TILE in my bathroom (I'm in Canada) - apparently one of us is using fancy imported tiles, I just can't tell who!

Hi Vance , those tiles are also in the bathroom ; Our second storey addition was done around 1974 , those tiles are quite a few years old !!!!

Hey Guys:

i was visiting another forum this morning and came across this tip:

"I masked the nav lights using Elmers glue. Once painting was finished, I simply touched the lights with a piece of masking tape and the dried Elmers lifted right up, after which I painted the port light clear red and the starboard light clear blue."

Has anyone tried this and if so, what were your results ?? ...

Thanks,

pepper

Pepper: For something like that I generally use 'liquid mask'. Micro Scale makes one brand and there are others as well. I think it works a little better than white glue. But Elmer's works just fine too. Only issue is if you wash the model between painting and the gloss and matt sealing coats the Elmer's will soften when exposed to water. The liquid mask won't. Not sure if it's a real problem unless you really douse the model or scrub the masked areas though.

Wow, didn't notice until now but seems that until John's modern a/c I was the only one doing a modern subject in this GB. Somehow I think that if the South had some K1A1s with their 120mm main gun, computerized targeting systems, high power to weight ratios, and composite armour back in the '50s the North's T34s wouldn't have been quite so unstoppable... I've had no success with any of the liquid masks ... must be a problem with me, though I've tried them all and have even read the instuctions before applying :-) ...

I'm just sticking to either Tamiya tape or BMF ...

John, a quick online check shows that the F-4D is being replaced by the F-15K in ROKAF. 1990 is out, but if you can find something as recent as last year, let me know, and it's in.

You can go with the KF-16 (Academy kit) or the F-5E.  It's hard to believe it, but the F-5 is STILL in service here.  I see them flying overhead every now and then, very distinctive engine noise!  Also, the UH-60 with ESSS fuel pods, and the Hughes 500 (AH-6 Nightfox), as well as the CH-47D for helos.  The navy is using Lynx helos and I believe that there's still a few F-4E's flying here in the RoKAF.  Can't remember what they use for Maritime Patrol, P-3's?  Anyone know about that?

Not exactly excited by the B-29 build, it's not going as smoothly as I'd hoped.  I took a slight detour and worked on some 1/72 figures.  I'm aiming mainly at crew served and heavier weapons.  These are the DPRK (In min gun) and Chi-Com troops.  The 82mm mortar comes with the Imex figures, the 120mm mortar is from Military Wheels.

Sorry about the crappy lighting, my good camera is at work and I'm using my backup one with less resolution.

And here's the US/UN side of things.  I'm most happy with the way the 82mm mortar turned out!

The figures come from everywhere.  Esci, Airfix, Hasegawa, etc.  There's only a couple that I could say for sure what their origin is.  The boat and rowers is definitely Airfix.  The soldier on the rock is Hasegawa,   The liquid cooled MG is Imex.

Andy the figures look great , well done .

I picked up some of those imex 1/72 Korean War figures [US Army] a while back , I'll paint a few of them up as well and add them to the armor builds .

Sorry to hear about the B-29 issue's , I'm thinking of starting mine sometime in March [hopfully]

Which Airfix kit did the boat come with , I would like to get one of those !

BTW , I'm glad you got the replacement prop for the F4U-4 .

I would say lucky is something of an understatement John! Wicked display space, I'm quite envious! One day I may have that space... I can but dream. Not much to report on the LA-11, bit more sanding done. Haven't decided on whether to go for North Korean or Chinese for it. Any thoughts guys?  My stash this week saw the addition of the Auster AOP VI, Damiler Dingo & Damiler MK2 armoured car, so the 29th brigade armour has grown a bit. Just wish someone did a 72nd scale Korean war AFV aftermarket set.

While I remember - quick appeal to anyone out there, Im trying to find a set of decals for a H04-S Chickasaw. I have the kit but am after the set of USMC marking that came in the Italeri kit. Anyone got a spare set they want to find a good home for? ;)

Okay,

I'm reading a book for the third time and I catch something that I hadn't noticed before.  The book is "Crimson Sky:  The air war over Korea."  It states in one paragraph that the DPRK used Yak-7's.  I think to myself, Hmmm, gonna have to get me a Yak 7 kit now.  A few sentences later it discusses the DPRK using Yak-18's and describes them as a dual engined heavy attack plane.

There's a ton of other good solid information in this book but, as a historian, I now find that I have to view it all with great skepticism as it has some obviously flawed data.  If the information on the Yak-18's is wrong, what ELSE is wrong?  I'm thinking that the info on the Yak-7's might really be Yak-9's.  But what aircraft does the author imply when discussing the Yak-18's?  And just what can I believe from this book?

As a historian, I always look for pictorial data or other sources (particularly primary sources) for supporting or contradicting information.  When neither is available I will accept grudgingly the information.  But when I learn that the data is corrupt, or incorrect in one part of the source, the entire source becomes highly questionable.

What are you folks' thoughts on the matter.  I'm still going to be using the book as a source for information, it has the whole story of Carlson's Dam Raid done really well!

Also, obligatory build comment:  I'm going to be working on the bombs for my B-29 today.  Decals, decals, decals...

Draken, I am in your corner there. I do not call myself a historian, but I do have some Intel background and training in my military career , and I am certainly a history buff. A good friend of mine who is a teacher likes to ask for "empirical proof". Confirmed photographs (not color profiles or plates) are such. The book may have one part of the war covered properly, but probably has flawed sources for others.

Pepper, your kit build is updated. If you need an F-80 kit, I highly recommend the Monogram/Revell F-80. It is  a beautiful rendition of that bird in1/48. I built mine a good 15 years ago or so. It was just re issued by Revell recently.

My Momma taught all we 8, that if the 'smallest 'something' is incorrect, then you have to call into question anything  or everything else' ... works for me !! ... and I agree - drawings or 'profiles' don't prove up a subject as do photographs ...

Thanks, stickpusher, for the update on my builds ... I do believe my LHS has the very F--80 kit you mention, and after getting back from some errand running this morning, I'm gonna jet (no pun intended) over and get one ... I happened to be in there yesterday and am sure I saw two ... a phone call won't suffice, as the Sunday-staff are not the brightest bulbs in the lamp and wouldn't have a clue even where to look - 'well, duh, how 'bout the kit section' sez me ...Big Smile

Ha ha ha ha!  I live in the RoK and my waifoo is in Minnesota, US.  I sent her into the basement and told her exactly where to look for two specific kits.  Not only did she find them, she found one of them before I finished describing where it would be.  I love her even MOAR now...

Wait...  Is that wrong?  Why should I be happy that I can tell her where to find my models ten months after seeing them last.

Wait...

Wat?

Obligatory Korean Build:  Nothing on the bombs today, maybe get to the tomorrow.  Spray painted the La-11 and did basic assembly on the LVT(A)-4 today.

What I did today:

Nothing on the B-29 like I'd thought I would.  A bit on the LVT(A)-4, and I prepainted the La-11.

This is, in fact, my third metal kit, and the second of which is significant.  the first was the 75mm howitzer.  Please bear with me on this, it's taking some time.  I'm going through a significant amount of #11 blades, plus a few bits and pieces of plasters (bandages), and washing my hands fairly often.  Which reminds me, if some of you could give hints as to the dangers of lead figures, etc. I'd be greatly appreciative!  I was an auto mechanic for ten years and dealt with heavy metals on a regular basis, I'd rather not die from them now.  :)

The La-9/11 is the CMK kit, bare bones, I'll be adding a minor bit to it, mostly in the tiny and painted details.  Maybe a bit in the wire/sprue details, we'll see.

type to y'all laters!

stik,

Very nice F-80! I just picked up two of them plus the Tamiya F-51D Korean War version - I seem to have picked up a Korean War aircraft bug - I'm looking to pick up an F4U-5 and the F-7 Tigercat.

After working on a few other projects and my day job keeping me quite busy, I've started working on my A-26 invader again.  The cockpit is almost done, I just need to add some seat belts.  Same for the gunner position, need to paint & weather and add the seat belts.  Gotta finish wiring the engines and still have one wing to re-scribe. The Eduard detail set is very nice but lots of PE to work with.  I'll try to get finished cockpit and gunner station photos later this week.

Steve, thanks for the kind words. I know what you mean about Korean War birds. Very pleasing to the eye and transitional between WWII stuff like the Corsair and the jet age Saber and Mig-15. Plus all sorts of paint schemes out there from sudues to very gaudy. The F4U-5 should not be hard to find, but good luck on that Tigercat. I am looking forward to seeing the Invader. That one is a favorite of mine.

Hi to   'the_draken':

I don't know how your pictures look on your computer, but on mine, there is a definite greenish cast to them ...

Just a thought - if you're using a camera  Camera  that allows you to choose a light source, perhaps yours is set on 'flourescent' rather than 'tungsten'  or 'incandescent'- or - the reverse ...

I've found that if I shoot under the lights on my kitchen table, which are the old-fashioned incandescent bulb type, I get a very greenish cast to my pictures because I've left the 'light source' setting on 'flourescent' (and vice versa) ...

Shooting at my train club under the flourescent tubes, my photos come out with a real bronze tint to them if I've left the light source setting on incandescent ...

Just a thought ...

"Which reminds me, if some of you could give hints as to the dangers of lead figures, etc."

Any amount of lead is something not to fool with, but from what I've read, if you wash your hands completely after working with 'it', you shouldn't have any problems at all ... of course, that's presuming you're not eating any ...Big Smile

Thanks Pepper!

From the wrench turning days, everything was done to place the 'fear of wife' (because she's more powerful than any god) into us about heavy metals.  But the precautions were just the same.  "Wash your hands."

As far as the pictures, yeah, definite greenish tint to them.  The biggest issue is that it's a diving camera.  My regular digital is at work and wasn't available for the photos.  No matter what I did, those were the best that I could get.  It's an old unit with less than 1 megapixel, and it's supposed to be 'preset for 50 foot' lighting conditions.  Meh, I've already replaced it with the one that's at work!  But thanks for the tip. Toast

I never did get to the bombs...  Crying

On a side note,I went looking for info on Korean War LVTs this morning. Two types were used there: the LVT-3C, an up-armored/up-gunned variant of the LVT-3 that first saw combat at Okinawa; and the LVT(A)-5, an improved version (powered turret, stabilized gun) of the LVT(A)-4 with the 75mm howitzer turret.

Is it possible to convert this Airfix LVT-4 to a Korean War version ???

It would take a bit of work to convert it to either variant. If you're good with sheet plastic to graft on an M8 turret or to change it to the Bushmaster LVT-3.

Here is your starting point

Thank's for the advice and reference pic's Stikpusher . Yes

It seems that a LVT-3 Bushmaster might be the easier of the two options to convert the Airfix LVT-4 .

The hobby store has one for $9 , so I'll buy one and have a try at a conversion ???

LVT's, cool......

Incredulously, I have actually finished some stuff, sort of.  I need to add the drop tanks and aerial wires to my mustangs, but otherwise done.  I want to build another F-82, because I know I can do a better job than I did.  It is a good kit, not perfect, but better than what I did.  What I would do different:  probably rescribe for one, not that I don't like the detail as it is, but I feel like I didn't do the seams as well trying to be gentle around the raised detail.  Next, I think I will try and use vacuform canopies as the stock ones are too thick.  Also, I would like to do something different than decals for the i.p..  Beyond that, I would try and do a better job overall of painting and detailing to include do a lot better exhaust staining!   The F-51 is a nice little kit too.  I have its big brother in 1/48 scale, and I look forward to it.  Here are a couple of pictures, and I will post more pictures when they are "finished".  Thanks to John (helo) for the decal help.

Next up, I think might try my Matchbox Skynight, or inspired by the Finescale Skyraider article, I might build an AD-4N.  I have an old Monogram AD-6, and I found some decals for a USMC AD-4N based in Korea.  The conversion doesn't look that difficult.  It is an idea anyways.  I have to clear up some other GB's before I get going on another Korea build though.

Cheers,

Greg
