Thanks Greg. I am having a great time working on it and taking my time to make sure everything comes out just right. Its an old kit that is great "canvas" to try new techniques on for me. Good thing too. Last nite I was browsing the website of a LHS for some paints regarding a question on here and low and behold, I find that MM has come out with two new enamel colors- Oily Steel and Track Brown. The Track Brown sounded just like what I wanted for the outer face (insteadof having to custom mix a shade) and I will try the Oily Steel for dry brushing highlights. So needing other paints I made a trip there this morning and scooped some up as well. Now my old favorite and long discontinued Humbrol "Track Colour" died long ago, so I am hoping this will be a suitable replacement. It looks good in the bottle. We should know this evening.Geeked

Thank's Greg ;

I also picked up a second hand copy of that terrific "USN/USMC" book and I bought the Airwaves resin 5P Recon nose based on that same color profile but like you I haven't come across an actual photo of one in use in Korea as yet .

Nice score on the Airfix Banshee , those recon version certainly had a long nose with all those camera's fitted . I'm sure the Banshee will take pride and place along with your other Korean Builds .

On a personal note , 2011 will be the last year I start multiple builds at the same time ; My upstair's living area is completely clutted with on going builds , frankly it looks more like a 'bone yard' with all the partially built aircraft sitting around , I would like to return to the good 'ol days where I built one kit at a time .

Sometimes I wonder if I'm as dumb as they come !

I found this pic in my Squadron "Air War over Korea" book , by Larry Davis ....

According to the caption the F9F-5P from VC-61 is painted silver all over .

On another note I don't think my two F-4 Phantoms and F-16A and B will be suitable for the current modern ROK aircraft . The Academy KF-16C arrived today , so that kit will be okay , I'll see if I can track down the other Academy F-16CG/CJ with low-viz Wolf Pack markings.

Okay, here's a couple of in progress shots of my ICM Yak-9P.  I've had to remove some of the fuselage plastic to create the window area for the DF aerial and used a bit of thin clear plastic from one of the Korean egg cartons for the plexiglass.  I was sure that I'd lost the clear parts and then remembered that I'd left them in the larger Tu-2/Yak-9 kit box for safe keeping.  Only a day lost in time and the entire workbench being cleaned in the mean time...  Embarrassed

You can see the home made aerial in the second picture.  The paint scheme is overall 'bright grey' which I've decided is going to be light ghost grey.  I'll be removing the clear parts after I'm done with the spray painting, then I'll touch up any interior details.

SP: Thanks for the heads up. I don't use much enamel paint anymore but I'll have to give these two a look. If you get a chance I'd love to see some photos of how the the paint looks on the treads. Though I suppose I can just wait till you post the finished photos if it's less trouble for you.

Draken: Very cool, looking forward to the finished photos.

Well, the base is done and I'm mostly happy with how it came out. Secured the tank to it with a wood screw though the bottom hull into the base and broke off the the trailing right road wheel and reglued it to match the curve of the terrain. Will try to get some photos up this weekend. Cross your fingers, I am getting close to the finish line. Then hopefully I can get back to the F9F Panther. And have been eyeing the Dragon M46 though the LAST thing I need to start is something new. You're a better multi-tasker than me John if you can keep all your stuff straight.

Cliff, as daylight faded yesterday (my painting area is in my garage which I open for good ventilation and sunlight) I brush painted a partial run of the tracks to see how the color looks. I like it! A great start point for weathered dirty burnished metal tracks. But airbrushing will be a better way to go. HmmI will get more pics posted as I get that done. Way before the finished ones. Wink

Unfortunately my father has become ill quite suddenly , so I will be taking a break from the Korean War GB for a while . Thank's to everyone for all the help with my builds and good luck to everyone else with their Korean War models .

I hope to catch up with everyone again in the not too distant future .

Kind regards ;

I am very sorry to hear about your father John. I wish him a speedy recovery. I am all too familiar with caring for a sick parent. I wish you the best with this and look forward to your return.

OK, this afternoon I was able to airbrush a coat of MM Track Brown on the outer surface of the tracks. I really like the color! The weathering can now begin.

Now lets see your progress there my freind.Wink

LMAO Draken, I have a huge shopping list for that site and in the far off days when I may have disposable income again its going to get pillaged. Just not right now. I probably have to move house in two months! Let me know how they look when they get there. Love to see how they turn out. Will have to get a photo of the Damiler Mk11 on here soonish, I finished it last week. The dingo hasn't got very far yet. Too much other stuff to do!

Ok here we go, the base, plaster road, with some railroad ballast and beach sand that was supposed to look like gravel but to me looks more like the asphalt that gets smooshed off the side of the road during road construction. Still that works for me as well. And a little static grass was added as well as the muddy tire tracks.

The tank is added with the repositioned rear road wheel. The white areas are where I dug up the grass with a motor tool to simulate where the tank treads would have churned up the turf but haven't gotten around to painting it brown yet.

I might need to shorten the threads but I don't think the extra will show once the upper hull with the skirts is in place. Next I need to get some dirt/mud etc. added to the road wheels and treads.

As I type this, I've got two different sounds going through my head...  First:  "Yakety Yak!", and the Law & Order sound, "DUN DUN!"

My Yak-9P is complete!  The ICM kit is kinda difficult, I wouldn't recommend it to most people, certainly not beginners.  Fit issues are the biggest thing.  The second is that the window in the fuselage behind the cockpit is not a clear part.  It does allow you to position the rudder turned or not.  The instructions are kinda sparse, much like the detail that I'd usually have come to expect with my ICM kits.

Other than that, I'm finished with it.  These are the only three that turned out with my digital camera.

Hey Everyone!

I've finally gotten some work done on my Invader.  I'm ready to close up the fuselage so I took some pics before I do.  Stil trying to decide if I want to hang some bombs in the bomb bay so I need to decide that before sealing it up.  Here are a few pics:

I still have the right wing to re-scribe and one engine to wire up, then I can get to the paint.  Thanks for looking!

OK, I just completed this kit. I started it long before this GB for another one, but it is a Korean War subject. Revell's 1/48 F-84E done up in the markings of a MiG Killer, 27th Fighter Escort Wing, 1951. If anybody here is considering buying this kit, GET ONE! You can not go wrong for under $20. This one is OOB except for decals and a PE seat harness that I added.

AWESOME!  I never really appreciated the beauty of the shape of the Thunderjet until I build the Academy 1/72 scale kit.  Now whenever I look at it I think it's going fast just sitting still.

Working on the B-29, still...  I've got a question, The Academy kit has props without the gloves at the base.  The videos and photos that I've seen of Korean War Superforts  show gloves at the base of the props.  Is this a mistake by the company?  Is there a way that I can get the correct props from another source?

Yeah the lines of the F-84 grow on you... Regarding the B-29 I was just looking thru some of my books recently and saw that many did not have the cuffed propeller blades as well. I was checking in comparison for curiosity about my Monogram Superfort kit which does have the cuffed propellers. So you can go either way.

I agree ... I built the Revell kit way back when for this GB and was most pleased by the fit and finish ...

Funniness in the world of model building.  I live in the RoK.  It's incredibly expensive to get non Academy kits here, and the shipping from the States is obscene since they eliminated the ground shipping after Sept. 11.  So, I buy a bunch of kits, and when it's time for my wife to send a package, she includes the kits.  I was just talking to her and she was complaining about all of the bubble wrap.  "Why can't they include newspapers for packing material!  At least I'd be able to read someone else's comic strips!"

On build related news, I've FINALLY sanded and primed the B-29 fuselage.  I also was able to paint the under surfaces of the wings and horizontal stabilizers, as well as the engine nacelles.  Moving along at a turtle's pace, but moving, nonetheless!

Andy, since you are in the land of Academy.....

Have you heard any news on their upcoming F-4B Phantoms?  It is supposed to be a 2011 release.  If you hear anything, please share.

Does anybody have any experience with the Academy SB-17?  That rescue service version looks interesting, and there have been some reasonable priced ones on evilbay lately.

I sure hope things are going ok for John (helo).  I hope his dad gets well quick.

Cheers,

Greg

Finally got round to taking some pictures of the finished Damiler MK2 armoured car. Hope they meet with everyones approval! Not much to report on the dingo, been rather busy on my model railway lately and finishing off an ME263 for a customer. Will update on that when I get some more on it done. Everyone else's stuff is looking superb! Also bunged one in of my M7...

I'm also very interested in that Phantom, even have the decals ready for it!  I haven't heard anything yet, and the one store that I go to (Academy retailer) hasn't heard anything.  I'm thinking that it's gonna be impressive, and tooled so that it can be re-popped as several versions (B/J, N/S, RF, D, E/FG, etc.) and want to see how Academy does it.  I'm generally very impressed with their production.  I just wish that the import restrictions weren't so bad as they are.  It is well nigh impossible to get anything that ISN'T Academy.  Forget about Dragon/DML/Trumpeter, Hobbyboss.  And Fujimi, Hasegawa, Revell, and Italeri are pipedreams.  I had a military friend who was getting my ebay stuff for me, but she got a letter saying the post office thought she was running a mail order business (Huh?) and she couldn't get as many packages anymore.  So, it's back on my wife again.  The air mail fee for a flat rate package is around $40-60 [USD] and that's kind of outrageous.

Any way...  I'll let ya know what they look like as soon as I get one!Toast

Here's a post I did earlier today for another GB I'm involved with ...

"I have a friend living in Croatia who buys a lot of stuff on eBay ... he has the Seller send it to me, and I, in turn, send it to him ...

Just yesterday I sent him a package that weighed a bit over 3 pounds ... the cost was $7.22 ... the eBay Seller had told him the cost to Croatia would be $44.00 ...

It's a no-brainer ...

If  I may help, I'd be happy to do so ...

pepper"

Guys,  I'd be happy to help with the mailing of purchases made by our far-flung friends, as stated above ...

And, you don't have to be buying from eBay ... if someone like Sprue Brothers or such give an outrageous shipping cost, you could have it sent to me and I, in turn, can send it on to you ...

For the forseeable future, I've nothing but time on my hands ...

Steve: Looking good!

SP: Nice job! Really love the different NM shades and the red accents. I haven't seen many F-84s at shows but she's a good looking a/c.

Doc: Great stuff! Is that 1/72-76 scale? It looks almost smaller to me but maybe it's my eyes. Honestly other than four-engined bombers I don't do much other than 1/48 and 1/35th. You and Draken  have better eyes and steadier hands than I have.

Close to finishing the K1A1 here but I've been feeling under the weather and think I'm coming down with something so I haven't gotten much done lately. Hope that I'll finish her off by the end of the month at least.

Guy brought an old '50s kit of a US old west 20 Mule Team wagon that used to be made by the Borax Corporation by our club Thur and I ended up being shanghaied into building it for him. Not that I'm really complaining but dang- guess I'll be painting mules for the next month or so....

Hey Helo and Doc!

Here's a cool new product that all three of us are going to run out and get for the build...  Dragon has a 1/72 LVT(A)-4 in 1/72 scale!  Here's the link for it

http://www.afv-news.com/

Can't wait to get mine, maybe get three of them.  I have no idea where to get them as of yet, but DANG I want one now!  Whomever gets one first, pony up with the details.

Hope everyone is well, I'm still feeling woozy enough I haven't gotten much done.

To keep the thread from falling off the bottom of the front page I'm posting this awesome picture I found. I think it's an artist's rendering of the first encounter between the US 'Daniel Boone' Brigade and the elite Red Chinese were-panda terror troops. Little did we know that only bullets made of bamboo have any effect on the horrible were-panda.... (shudder)
