Panzerjager GB (March 1st - June 30th, 2011)

Figured out what I'm going to build for this GB-JagdPz IV L/70 (V).  It's the 1/35 Dragon Smart kit.  I'll save the Marders & the StuG for future GB's since we have a couple represented here already.  And besides, Sprue Brothers was running an additional 14% off of their Super Specials (today only), of which this kit was one.

Thank you. I just got off of Dragon's site. Seems like a nice upgrade compared to their Huber kit, which I heard was lacking. I kind of wish it had the DS tracks.

Agreed.....but then again, clicking 97 tracks, give or take,  together for each side with a good cup of coffee (or your beverage of choice) and the family & TV in the background isn't a bad way to spend an evening.  Also allows for a little sag in the tread.....and compared to the old clip, file, sand, click & glue....it's all good.

I know that I considered the early Jagdpanther w/zimmert for that reason alone (it has the DS tracks)....until I started counting road wheels..

I actually like the schurzen myself, so the track sag wouldn't be an issue, but point taken. They could be done in an evening sitting. I still haven't done the Doog's tutorial, but will give it a go on my Jagdtiger.

As for beverage, there is only one isn't there?

I know I'm in with the Marder III H, but guess what I had delivered to my door this morning...

Not bad for one of their pre-SmartKit/Premium Editions.  Aluminum barrel, brass ammo, metal tow hooks.  Indy track links that are on sprues though.  Eep.  Reminds me of the old Tamiya Tiger I with four sprues of 80 indy tracks with three sprue attachment points each.  Bleah.  Oh, and my four man Dragon Marder crew showed up as well.  The ones without the heavy winter clothing.  Driver, loader (with ammo), gunner and commander figs.  A good Tuesday.

That's a great kit that goes together like a dream. I built one about a year ago, and it really was a pleasure. Also, the tracks were by far the easiest Magic Tracks I've ever assembled: took about 20 minutes to click the links together for one side, and another hour for the glue to set up to the point that I could wrap them around the road wheels. I like the Magic Tracks, but I can also see how the DS tracks could be desired too. For me, DS tracks for Dragons Shermans are life savers!

Nate-thanks for the info.  As a general rule, I don't like Dragon's instructions so it's good to know that the kit is a good build.  I do more aircraft than targets....err...armor but I'm looking forward to this GB.

Matt-that's one big kitty!  I gave consideration to a Jagdtiger also, but the road wheel thing kept getting in the way.....that and space to display it!

It's worthwhile to check Sprue Brothers site often....I try to check daily.  Sales like this pop up quite often.  Prior to Christmas they were running some great daily sales.

Yeah, I check it pretty much daily as well.  Scored some pretty good deals during their December Daily Deals.  I had my Jagdtiger, King Tiger, Pz III N and a couple of figure sets from them delivered today.  Two of the three were in that 14% off sale.  Grrr.  Still managed to pick up the SdKfz 7 with the 2cm Flak 38, an M4 81mm Mortar Carrier and a couple of the 5cm and 7.5cm PaK cannons with the crews...

That's my build! Yes, magic tracks to boot. However, I do realize that I have about 7 qualifying kits in the stash for this build and if I buy that jagdpanzer............stay tuned.

I ordered the Jagdpanzer IV from Sprue brothers. Glad I waited, the extra $4 off was worth it. I was crying for not taking advantage of their sale during Christmas.

Anyone know how much they charge for postage for 2 kits? Obviously, It will be even cheeper if the shipping isn't all that affected by additional kits.

Dunno about the shipping.  Doesn't the Sprue Brothers site have a way to check the shipping charges of the order before you commit? 

Of course, you could order between $100 to $200 and get half price shipping.....or over $200 and get free shipping.....now that's the way to go....

Sprue Bros is always my 1st online stop. My mom never knows what to get me for bdays, Xmas etc so she gave me her credit card # and tell me what to get the gift cert for.  It's always at Sprue Bros.  A great arrangement if you ask me.

I hear that!  And both of mine are "home brew"  Dark roast with some espresso in th AM and right now for the PM working my way through an Irish red ale.  An IPA will be going the the brew bucket very soon

Well searching around i found the elefant with zimmerit for 55 bucks from sprue bros its a bit steep but i think its worth it int eh end, although they do have the 1:35 Dragon Elefant SdKfz 184 - Premium Edition Kit #6311 for 39 bucks but alas no zim. So i thin the 20 bucks extra will be worth me not losing ym sanity!

Ill order it next week, after i price it out at a few more places.

Any suggestions welcome. (im in the US)

I have spent in excess of $400 through Sprue Brothers since the beginning of December, and I have NEVER been disappointed.  Their shipping schedule is rock solid, I've never had anything broken or dented from them, and you'd be hard pressed to beat the prices in their Super Special section.  Especially Dragon armor kits.  It can be hard to catch the right kit at the right time, since he keeps most of his non special stock below 5 on hand, but overall, it's really tough to beat.

TigerPE1... why not opt for the Ferdinand.  No zim needed.  Except for adding a copula, moving the tool kit to the rear, adding the rain gutter to the front and maybe some other tiny cosmetic difference... it's the same thing. $34 at Sprue Bros.

Or model the Elephant as a Ferdinand in the middle of being converted but not yet recieving the zimm. That's what I am thinking to do for my non-zimmed Italeri Elephant. That or try applying zimm for the first time. Decisions, decisions...

Oh BTW, now that I know about the Sprue Bros. super specials I may have to put in an order soon. I just have to find a way to do it while keeping SWMBO happy. LOL

Marc beat me to it. I have the premium edition of the Ferdy and it's pretty sweet.

I've built the plain-jane Elefant and it was an enjoyable build. I just added some Cavalier zimmerit and ended up going with the much maligned DS tracks which saved my sanity.

Holy Guacamole. I just checked Spruebrothers and purchasing another kit only added another $2 in shipping. A third kit, another 50 cents on top of the $2 for the second. Wow. Buy in bulk and save big bucks.

I was looking in the stash last night and noticed my Ferdinand premium edition. Hmmmmmm. The problem I have is that I built an Elefant some years ago, so I want to try something different. My Tamiya Hetzer is also staring at me. Sounds stupid, but I want to build one of my Dragon kits while I still some eyesight and patience left.

Of course that Jagdpanzer is on it's way from Spruebrothers..........However, I have a Panzer IV started in my stash, so that's enough tires to piant. LOL

More then likely going with the Jagdtiger and can't wait to rip the box open and start plotting a camo scheme and such. I think I'd really like to do a two-color combo. So, does anyone know if yellow and green, or yellow and red-brown would be more popular at this juncture of the war?

I don't know for sure, but I think they were pretty much all painted in a tri-colored scheme. Quite a few in ambush schemes too. I don't recall seeing any in 2 colored camo, but I'm not an expert on them either. Maybe someone else knows different?

A thought has occurred to me.   Since this is your GB Eric... Does this mean we will finally get to see some WIP pics.  i don't believe I have ever seen that before.  Isn't that an internet law... mod a GB you must show pics?

I don't know if I'd be a very good author per say, I will try to provide up-to-date pictures of my work. I don't have a studio area, so I've been trying to shoot outdoors, and you know the sunlight in the NW sucks. I know most haven't seen any of my work for I'm a notorious quiter. LOL

I have finished 5 GB's since I started: Panther, StuG, Italeri, Kursk, Elefant. it seems to be a motivator for me.

*I forgot to mention that if anyone with creative artisty would like to attempt a badge, feel free to submit ideas.

Well I hope I can meet the date but I have not had a slip up yet, count me in with the dragon expo '07 George Bose Stug III G early.  I read that somebody else was thinking of doing this kit as well, would be great from my point of view to have another one for comparsion.

uh....that would have been me...I decided to go with a Jagdpanzer IV instead.  Not really sure that I wanted to tackle a winter scheme at the moment.  However, Wing Nut is doing a Cyber Hobby Stug III G early-my guess is that the kits are pretty much the same.

Looking forward to seeing your build for future reference though.
