Add me to the roster with another 1:700 scale sub, an LA class. after that, I will probably do a destroyer or ASW modern frigate. if I have the time, i will add a wingie thingie (dauntless or devastator) Toast

Kermit,

Put me down for round 2.  Don't know what it will be yet.  Maybe something that flies (maybe the Hasegawa S-3 Viking in Centennial colors).

Hey Jmart, Lewbud good to see you guys hereToast

Well i've been plugging away at the Biber....

I managed after a few attempts  (see dud peices) to get the plastic rod Verlinden provided for the rudder actuating heated and bent into the correct shape...I also had to ditch the oversized brass etch part that attatches to the conning tower and replace it with a peice i made from very thin plastic sourced from a tub of Mc Donalds sweet n sour sauce.....

hi Super Angry

also here some (little) update for the gannet

.......searchin on unused parts and old kits for a raw piece that will be the base for turboprops  .. (it's impossible to not found somethig Confused )

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:250:250]

.. at the end found these that fit well (must be some type of weapon for old italeri f-117)

Photobucket

some cut and sanding after

Photobucket

needed again anothe piece to bridge with air intake, and lots of tubes wirest etc

After consulting pictures of real, a bulkhead (not sure this is the right word in english Tongue Tied )

is visible on the ssection, then starting cut plastic sheet and shaping it:

Photobucket

cutting hole for engines:

Photobucket

Photobucket

needed some extra support because till the complete detailing of inner the pice cannot be glued to fuselage but only to the cockpit floor

Photobucket

Photobucket

glued! and lower part cutted.

final fitting test with engines

Photobucket

and that's all for now Sad

Here's a start on the new Airfix HMS Trafalgar. The hull is three pieces, comprising of lower quarters and an upper half split longitudinally. The seams will need some work. Construction looks to be straightforward, I've already removed all parts I will be using from the sprue.

One interesting point is that the photo of the real vessel on the kit box shows a distinctive tiled appearance, however Airfix have not made any attempt to replicate it. I don't think I will go to the effort either.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Wow I have been missing a lot of fine stuff going on here, even see some gizmology going on too.

kermit

Randy,

Buddy!Big Smile Ofcourse i would love to have you for the GB! And i am very curious about your news here. Sub kits you say?? If  it is the revell subs, all of them are nice but the 1/144 kits are a little nicer than the older 1/125 U99 kit...just sayinWink. Oh,..... and subs fly through the water so technically it's not a shipGeekedPropeller

Looking forward to the news about your scoreSmile

Richard

Richard I didnt make it to Michaels but am planning to get there sometime next week, hopefully they will still have one of the subs.

Started fooling around with the AM Avenger earlier tonight. I've heard great things about this kit. I was really looking forward to it... not so much now. Great detail but very very fiddly assembly and crappy instructions. I've only been building kits since July and I don't think I'm up for this one... we'll see.

Wow, ive been gone for a couple of days and here you guys fill up an entire page...Indifferent Very good very good....melikesitBig SmileYes

Taxtp,

Your trafalgar is coming along very nicely. It might be an option to try to simulate the tiling with masking tape or something but it would be a serious job in that scale. So i understand your choice not to. Still looks great!

Julez,

Hey my friend. I see you are equally as skilled with resin and i can see you are racing along with your biber. You might persuade me to start looking for that new italeri one...Yes

bsyamato,

Again, a very interesting update and excellent scratching! Keep it comingWink

jbrady,

I know where you are coming from m friend. Those instructions are a nightmare. I built that italeri rebox and italeri didn't even include the text that comes with the AM offering. But i really have to say that with some pictures (why not use my update pics from the previous GB?) and dryfitting you are bound to get there. Your descision ofcourseWink

Last week i've been working on my own type XXI and i must say that the interior detail is great! Litterally every little compartiment is showing complete with little beds and chairs and also the galleySmile I should have some pics to show shortly...

Jbrady I have seen some of your work and personally think the kit will be a good challange for you. I have found when I build a kit that I feel is over my head that I learn a bunch that I wouldnt have had I not built the kit, ICMs MiG-3 comes to mind.  The advise I would give is dont be afraid to walk away from it for a day or two if you get frustrated. Thats what I do and when I do come back to it its with a different mind set and things seem to just fall into place.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Bsyamato:

That Instrument panel looks great! Excellent drybrushing; have to agree with Julez thereWink

Well,... I promised you guys some pictures of where i am at with the type XXI...

A total shot:

And a more close up one of the stuff i done recently:

Every compartiment is painted and built up separately and then glued on the previous one. Really neat! I am working on the engine compartiment as we speak and it will conclude the interior part... The whole thing will then be glued on the fuselage. Still figuring out how i will spray the outside and keep all this work masked...

No real weathering yet sofar, just painting and some drybrushing. I decided to use washes on the whole thing once im done with the interior to get a more uniform result. Hope you guys like it (yes, there's even a small galley and officers quarters inthere, no kidding!)

I hope Japan is able to get things under control soon and my best goes out to them.

Kermit MAN !!!!!!!!!!! talk about attention to detail. You have again out done yourself buddy Bow Down. I hope some of it shows once you put it in the hull.

many thanx men, i see some of our great works on "Official no aftermarket gb" (julez kermit and vetterman), no aftermarket it's my official way to build , i'm a great stingy man (hope is the right word for that i mean Huh?).

With so little instrumets panels white drybrush it's the only way to reveal it; after matt black all instruments disappeared Blind Fold

At the end decided for the german version with total black propellers/ogive.

(p.s. picture above are commons free)

I re-started to modelling after brought some gunpla kits, and known lots of japanese  involved in gunpla modelling, and one of my best friend have his girlfriend from tokyo.. Sad

None of them was injuried by heartquake or tsunami, but nuclear plants ... i hope that the atomic warning will be under control soon .

Richard, wow man your making excellent progress on the type XXI...I'm very interested in your build, researching the Biber i've read alot in the last couple of weeks about the German U-boat arm...Apparently the type XXI was the most advanced conventional sub of it's time and was the basis of the Foxtrot class in the Russian navy..

As a side note the Biber i'm doing may have taken part in an unsucessful attempt to destroy the Nijmegan bridge after it was captured by the allies...in fact most of the Bibers operated from the Netherlands and were true iron coffins, 90% of Bibers sent out never came back...

Thank you all for your comments. It is a very nice kit, especially considering it's 20 euro price tag. The port hull has a cutout so you can see all the goodies perfectly once the boat is finished:

The other side is closed so you can display it like that tooSmile

Yes, the type XXI was revolutionary and a base for russian and american sub designs after that. It was actually faster underwater than above. It also had the afforementioned hydraulic reloading system, three toilets (type VII had only one for the entire crew) and a freezer (a luxury the type VII's could only dream of).

Just read this story that, france used type XXI's they received after the war as late as the suez crisis!

Yeah i looked at Foxtrot class subs, they served with the Indian navy for 35years...You can see the similarity..

Been working on the TBF for a week now. It's not winning me over. This is all I've got done. One thing that's new to me... I messed up the IP beyond salvage. (unintentional) so I ordered the Eduard detail set. The IP is not compatible with the kit IP. I had to cut the photo etch and file and sand it to match the kit IP. Also had to cut off some of the sidewall detail so I could close up the fuselage. Never had that happen with Eduard sets before.

Now on to the rear cockpit. I know the bronze green looks different than what is usual but I found a color plate of Grumman bronze green and I matched it with my monitor (it's color corrected to RGB). I used Interior green, flat black, and FS 34079 dark green. More later.

JBrady,

Difficulties or not, you just can't beat AM's out of box detail! Looks mouthwatering anytime i see it, regardless of who built it. Hope you can still find the enthousiasm to carry on with the build. It will be worth it! Just look out for that wretched turret. It's a bit of a chore and lots of fiddling to get it in it's slot. AM actually has a section on their website devoted to this part of the build. Love your work sofar sir!Wink

BSYamato,

My best of wishes and thoughts for the people of Japan in these hard times... I follow every bit of news as it happens. One good thing that came from all this at least is the fact that a lot of countries, including holland are now investigating the safety of their nuclear power plants... The only plant we have here in the country is just some 25 miles away...

Back to the hobby though..: This new XXI sub has the interior stuff in it but it is a retooling of the 1990's XXI by revell that doesn't. If you dont like the extra work but want to model a XXI, i would suggest looking for an older boxSmile

Anyways,.... i can announce completion of the last subassembly of the interior: the engine compartiment with the twin 2000hp diesel engines:

The whole interior has now been painted so i can start installing and weathering itBig Smile

Just combined the interior with the hull halves and glued on the decks... Tower is added as dryfit.

Some sanding and filling required but not nearly as bad as i feared. Appearantly i did an "ok job" with assembling the interior. It was a tight fit below the decks but i managedSmile

ok Yes .. i need a glossary Tongue Tied

Experience with PE only with an eduard set for b-24 for hasegawa, but i've adapted for an academy b-24, i remind lots of work needed, after this brought only two PE sets from airwaves , one for ejection seats handles and a ladder 1/72 for tornado:

Photobucket

.. sorry for dust... the one on right is the 10.000 lire (actual 5 €) PE ladder, the one on left is scratched for

f-104s, maded by evergreen plastic strips and recycled copper  wire... by this i prefered to go on scratch way Embarrassed cheaper and funny Yes

.. but why bysamoto?...Hmm , bs (battleship)  yamato

Jbrady some very nice detail work on the TBF man, very nice indeed. As Richard said dont give up on it buddy they can be a nightmare at times but in the end it is well worth the effort. I almost trashed mine 3 times and am now happy I didnt. I had trouble with the turret too on my Revell kit and ended up not gluing the top rear fuse together until I had the turret installed, the lower half I had to glue though before the turret went in. It wouldnt go in at all with the joint closed tightly, so I spread it apart a bit and it went in and locked beautifully, then glued and clamped the rest of the fuse together. I cant say if the Academy has that same trouble.

Kermit I find all I can say about your sub is Bow Down Beautiful beautiful work sir.

De havilland Canada Welcome Sign to the forums !!!! I am sure Kermit will be more than happy to include your build in the group.

Bsyamato nice work on those ladders there guy, they can be difficult to build I know. I am particularly impressed with your scratch built ladder YesYes

Richard I still haven't made it back to Micheals yet for my sub Embarrassed. And I still have to order my destroyer too.
