I put lead shot around nose gear bay,aft of cockpit bulkhead, and forward of main gear behind engines....probably 60+grams....oh well.

Gannet should not be as hard to weigh down.

Cheers

It is starting to look like a Gannet now Yamato!

I will be curious to see if you end up as a tail dragger or not.

Good luck and keep up the good work

Bsyamato,

If all else failes you could always put it on a base and glue it on...? Just a suggestionSmile

I hope this problem will be resolved with engines plumbing Smile

Eventually i can put more weight on the wings front, but is too close at the main gear to make the difference

A diorama was an option, but generally i hate to glue down my planes, in this case because i'll put some extra detail in the torpedos bay....

another solution is to put the gannet tail on a display with an air spray .

finally i found the sprues pictures

Photobucket

... as i said at the start, there's a lot of pieces ..

I applied a coat of Neutral Gray for Haze Gray on the hull and superstructuer and I used Gunship Gray for Deck Gray on decks...

A couple over all shots with the superstructure sides held in place and the deck placed on the hull.

a close up of the 5" turret and the sonar dome after I sanded the putty smooth

close up of the 5" turret and ASROC launcher....neither are painted yet as I am still gonna add some detailing to each... I have drilled out the bore of the 5" gun.

close up of the Mack assembly and the gun director... I hollowed out the radar dish abit and am still gonna add some details there... the Mack will be dressed with some detailing up a bit before painting...

and a close up of the Tarter/Standard MR launcher and the fire control radar... again I bored out the radar dish, but still need to add more detail to that one as well...

Thanks DH!

I did a bit more work on her late last nite... my first ship PE...Toast Well nothing major, just a couple vertical ladders added on to the Mack assembly, but they are my first. I am sure under a coat of paint the will look good..

And not one to let some time go to waste, I scribed some detail onto the top of the ASROC launcher to match what I have seen in photos...

And then I did some work on the Sea Sprite helo: fuselage seam clean up, thin down the rotor blades some (not quite the right size for some PE one I have,, dang) and the main landing gear wheels were molded as a solid rod all the way across. I changed that to give two distinct (somewhat) wheels..

Looking good Stik, I've actually built this one myself, probably when I was still in high school + long-gone now. I was never a "blow it up" kinda guy, so I can only assume it ended up in a tiny little scrapyard somewhere!

Thanks Vance. My original build of this went in to garbage as well. Unlike the USS Halsey which became a range target for my BB gun...

My next challenge is to scratch a new Air Search radar for her. The one that come with the kit is an older incorrect type.

Any little bit of extra detail helps huge. Those ladders look great! The seasprite looks really good too.The blades you have look nice too.I remember doing a small Seahawk ,and the blades were too thick and chunky so i used .006" brass shim stock which worked very well especially when I drooped them.Just a thought if you are not happy with the kit ones.

Cheers

"... but once you start down that path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you it will!"- Yoda

Was he talking about the force or AMS???Surprise

Well painting for today is out due to windy weather (15-20 blowing straight into my garage where I paint and have the door open) So I decide I am gonna do more add on to the Mack. The molded exhast ventts were pretty weak, so I drilled them out. But then the openings did not look right... what to do???Hmm Some aluminum tubing to the rescue! I was able to get some to fit that I had, cut and filedthem to proper length, then bored out the edges to proper shape and now, some proper machinery exhaust vents... now to tackle that SPS-52 air search radar...Whistling

Thanks for the idea on the rotor blades Martin. I have brass shim stock in the drawerToast

AMS- Advanced Modeler's Syndrome. The urge to continuously modify/detail any kit you are building, beacuase OOB (Out Of Box) is never right, good enough, etc. Be it purchased after market or scratch built gizmology it starts to consume your building style.

Here is close up view of one of the new exhaust  vents. A big improvement!

well then I had to add vertical ladders to the mast, I off and re positioned the top portion from fore/aft to side to side, based off some pics I found. I also scratch built and added the cap for the top of the mast, added some PE railing to the yardarm, some anemometers, made and attached the SPS-10 Surface search radar. That little two piece item took me the longest time to get glued together properly...

front view

rear view

and a close up including the stack vents

Then I built a new SPS-52 Air Search radar. I superglued some Starbuck's Green Tea teabag mesh (a very fine nylon mesh perfect for this sort of stuff) to the main piece of sheet plastic for the texture, then added the side panels and lower bar from strip styrene. I attached it to the original kit radar piece base for mounting. It is not 100% accurate or perfect, but it is a big improvement over the kit part.

rear view

and then placed on the Mack assembly

I am loving this first experience with this PE stuff here! More to follow next weekWink

Very nice indeed Stik.

That is a great idea for mesh...I will remember that one.

Can't wait to see some color on it!

I discovered that mesh by accident while Christmas shopping this past year. Had some green tea to perk me up and saw that the bag was a fine mesh... the modeler's eye said it would be useful. I am sure folks must have wondered why I put that thing in my pocket if anyone was watching...Confused It works excellent for 1/35 helmet nets too.

Hey all,

Some nice builds going on in here. I think i'd like to jump in here on this one. I have the Italeri 1/48 S-3B Viking that i'd like to add. I'm going to do it in the Cenntenial colors.

Hey Stik, is that ship a early version of the Oliver Hazard Perry Class of ships. They look a lot alike.

Yamato- Nice Gannet. Nice to see one of those being built.

Julez and Kermit- Great looking subs.

de havilland canada- Cool looking Tracker. I wanted to see that kit built. Very nice paint job.

Here's a pic of the Viking i'm gonna do.

Building- (All 1/48) F-14A Tomcat, F-16C Blk 30, He 129

Medic, she is the forerunner to the OHP Class. The Brooke Class were the first FFGs and served from the mid 60s onward. I really like your choice of subject material, that Viking is a great tribute to the old Scout/Observation Squadrons in early WWII!

Yamato, I took another pic of the scratchbuilt radar here, you can get a better idea of the mesh giving the grid pattern/texture on the radar faceplate.

Well, I spent much of yesterday before work adding PE to the Mack assembly and I began removal of the molded on stairs and adding on PE inclined ladders. Here are some pics of up to where I left off yesterday...

front and rear 1/4 views of Mack

superstructure sides- one with molded on stairs removed and PE inclined ladders added, one as molded...

and the molded on stairs on the superstructure that would be removed today and replaced by PE

then came today's work- molded on stairs removed and an opening made in catwalk for PE inclined ladder

PE inclined and vertical ladders added to superstructure

PE inclined ladders added to superstructure topsides after molded on stairs were removed

and final bits of PE railing added to Mack, as well as support beams for yardarm

and since weather conditions were good this afternoon, it was off to the paint shop for the hull. Lower hull was painted in MM Acryl Marine Colors Anti Fouling Red

and of course, then it was time for the place everything on the hull and take some shots pics...Stick out tongue

time to take a break...Whistling

Medic welcome and funny you should say you wanted to see the Tracker built up because I wanted to see the Viking built before I got one so def. looking forward to it.Thanks for the compliments ,I am still waiting decals and final touches but you guys will see it here first.

I just got the AZ model Firefly in 1/48 so being that we have  till 2012 I think I will throw it in the build as well!!

Cheers all
