Im about to start the mighty Tamiya P-51D in 1/32 at the end of the year. Getting the kit for much less than I can over here, getting it directly from Japan.

You can always host your own individual WIP thread. I've done it a few times and had an absolute blast. Great way to learn and force yourself to not cut corners, too...

I'll be watching for your P-51. Looking very forward to tackling mine once the move's done and the bench is operational again. But I've got Trumpy's F4F-3 Wildcat up first (70th anniversary of Wake...).

hahah you're the master mate, Ive seen your (Mark 8??) Spitfire and its superb. 

I'm building the Trumpy Hellcat first which Im looking forward to. Trumpeter is ok but I feel not in the same league as Tamiya's big 1/32's. The Mustangs gonna be a new sort of challenge as was my 1/32 Spit.  Cheers Doogs

Furyfn your P-51D would fit in perfectly here, so let me know if you want to join in and I will get it listed on the front page. On your Hellcat I have to ask how far along you are with the build.

Also it looks like you are new to the forum so welcome.

Doogs you are making me want to start the 1/48 Tamiya Sherman I have had for a year or so. Your tank is looking very good.

The Mustang is about 2 months off. I haven't started the Hellcat yet, was about to this w/e.. sooo I dont think that bird would fit in here ah? Thats ok though as I might just run that in the weathering GB.

Thanks vetteman! I had a bit more time due to classes winding down a bit for fall break. Im at home right now visiting family, so I will have pictures up when I get back to the dorms.

When is weekend madness? I cant keep a large stash in the dorms, so I have to bring a few kits back with me when I visit home. Gotta plan ahead, doncha know!

Looking forward to the P-51, picked up Tamiya's 1/32nd P-47 a few months ago but don't have the courage to start on her.

Guys, quick update- 'Fat Cat' is 99.99 done but the bottom landing gear door vanished. I found one on an old kit to subsitute but there are several chipped places that keep showing up under the NM no matter how much I sand and fill. I'm getting to the point of bringing in my armour modeling mode and covering the wheels and lower landing gear with mud to cover it

CallSignOwl is gonna use foil I think weekend maddness is next month, Richard more then likely knows when it starts. I am too slow to even enter it, but love watching and commenting. I saw a post asking about it, not sure of I saw it here in the GB section or over in the aircraft section.

Furyfn your P-51D is in and on the front page, cant wait to see that BIG 51 come together.

Gamera mud and crud was quite common on the gear, even on the shiny ones, I say go for it man !

As promised, here are some foil pics I snapped before break! I had an issue with one of my foil sheets in that I applied the adhesive too thick (or something) and got brush marks!! Grrrrr Scratch that sheet! After making a new sheet and scraping off the bad foil, I got the majority of the airframe covered.

Just think about it.. what better way than to simulate aluminum with......aluminum?. I can tell you it is an artform by itself to get it to sit right on your model.. OWL and Vetteman are really good at it though!

Dont go and sell yourself short Richard, I seem to remember a very fine looking F-86 you built.

Furyan its not really harder than painting just a different way of doing NMF. In some ways painting is easier and in others foil is easier, however both require an almost perfect surface prep before applying.

Owl: Looks very cool Owl, I'm going to have to try it one day.

Furyan: I've seen some very impressive results with the foil. I haven't tried it since it can be hard to get it to stretch around curves especially complex ones like a Lockheed P-38.

I have to hand it to anybody who can foil and foil well. Definitely not for me, but done right it looks fantastic.

There was a guy at the Austin show last month who grabbed a few awards with foiled birds. IMO this was the best of them

CallSignOwl  shiny !!!!!!!!!! Wow, I really really like the way you are using the foil for shading effects, looks like you are using both sides of it and turning the grain Sweet !!!!!!!!!

Doogs I remember that picture, sure is a beautiful job of foiling.

Here is the finished foiling. I got the different hues from using both the shiny and dull side of the foil, as well as scrubbing select panels with 0000 steel wool for yet another shade. The two panels around the exhausts are foil stained/darkened using a bleach-water-lead mixture illustrated in the magazine a few months back. Some of the areas that are hard to cover with foil ( i.e. curvy wingtips) were painted chrome silver, and the fabric covered control surfaces were painted regular silver.

then, I coated the foil with a protective layer of future (except the fabric control surfaces. I did not want any glossiness on those). The decal sheet calls for a beat-up bird, so the glossy-shininess of the foil will not be permanent. After the Future cured, I masked off and painted the white invasion stripes.

after waiting a day for the paint to cure and to avoid pulling up large chuncks of paint, I masked off and painted the black invasion stripes, as well as the blue nose.I then scruffed everything with the steel wool to get the beginning of chipped and weathered look going

That foiling, it's purely amazing!!!!!

haha, and here are the finished AM decals. I've only got a few more stencils, then its on to the final weathering and fiddly bits! The insignia that went over the fuselage ID stripes were doubled up because the stripes would show through using just one decal. The decals that came in the kit shattered, so Im lucky I have a box of spare stuff!

That is probably the best mustang I've ever seen by far!! Wonderful foiling and the blue really brightens it up, one of your best works of art!!!!

My references for "The Flying Scot" call for a worn bird, with heavy chipping on the nose, propeller and spinner.

And p51s....they could get pretty beat up.

True.. and The foiling is epic. No way I could handle doing that.
