Ben- Great process on your StuG!  Nice move not using the right front fender... that would be interesting!  Looks like you didn't have any fitting issue with the hull?

Who doesn't love those Friuls??? Stick out tongue  Yesterday at the national show I was looking for same StuG kit at vendor tables but I didn't see one but I had very little time shopping.  Gonna keep my eyes open for it at future shows.

Chazzer- Scott, Scott, Scott, I am so happy you have completed your StuG.  I think it looks great especially that you are relatively new at this hobby joining FSM a year ago.  Love the stowage everywhere... this is something I always wanted to do a diorama one day.

Most important thing how are you doing?  Hope your health is much better now.

As your GB host, I am going to use this picture in the Hall of Fame...

I was only kidding... of course it is my favorite shot.  How about this picture for the Hall of Fame?  I like this better because the color seems to be best...

Don't worry about StuG III F... take a break as long as you can as the GB has been extended til end of August.  And we have Bob working on Ausf F too.

Thanks for being part of my GB... take it easy Chazzer! Beer

Guys-  Our friend John (ogrejohn) and I had too much fun at AMPS National in Auburn yesterday.  Don't ask me how much I spent but I am proud that I bought only two kits this time.  Embarrassed  Just like John, I wanted to buy more aftermarket sets and better paints & washes, books, etc.

My favorite vendor was obviously AK Interactive... spent more than $150 but the F.A.Q. 2 my new "bible" was $80 alone.  John brought his copy he bought earlier so I could read it while carpooling to Auburn and I was SOLD to get my copy.  John can be so evil... Devil but he is still a great friend!

That's John (right) pushing me (left) to buy more AK stuff... only kidding! Stick out tongue

Enough about Auburn... here's an update on my StuG.  I was so motivated to work on it after attending Mig's from AK Interactive workshop for two hours with John.   I used one of new AK products "streaking" washes on the StuG...

Closer shots of the streaks...

Applied MIG Fuel & Oil stain washes...

Hope you like streaks... it was easy but time consuming as it took me nearly three hours at repeated paces.

Hey Andy!

Damn, I wish I could have been at that show with you, it looked superb. A nice haul too - I'll look forward too seeing what you do with that Marder Yes

Whick streaking Effects did you buy? I find the regular AK Streaking Grime to be one of the best but my personal favourite is the streaking Rust Effects as it really adds some splashes of colour and obviously works really well on all basecoat colours. You've got some excellent stuff going on here! Perfect, subtle streaking!

I do want the FAQ book but I bought the AK DVD which covers Filters, Washes, Streaking etc and being able to see it actually done in real time is so helpful - I'd recommend it 100% to any user of AK products. I know you use Enamels Andy so I'm assuming you use a coat of Future prior to applying these products? They work sooo much better on a normal Acrylic paint Basecoat. I'm not sure how well they'll work on an ultra glossy Future coat? You should try an all Acrylic build sometime matey and I'll do an Enamel build? Toast The DVD shows Mig applying thick vertical lines on the hull walls of a KT then using a similar brush slightly moistened with low odour Thinners to, what he calls, 'Stump' the thick lines and working over them until a very fine streak is all that is left. I'm sure you'll find something on You-Tube? Honestly, when you see it done it makes it all so much easier and removes a lot of the guesswork. I usually give a few minutes to let the thick lines set a bit before streaking with thinners otherwise they just completely wipe off in one swipe! It looks great so far matey! Perhaps some Rust from one ot two of those big old bolt heads up front will look great? The best thing being-if it doesn't work, wipe it off! The streaks so far are perfect so you've obviously got it mastered!

The StuG C/D upper assembly went together like a dream - soooo simple! I'll have the barrel dropped into the Mantlet for next weekend as it's still in the post. The Friuls will be started next weekend as I've got to much work stuff to do today and a banging headache so they can wait. The Fender that's been torn away should look good once completed. I'll try and bend the other one up like you have using the hot lamp method maybe?

I cannot wait to see this build finished Andy, you are truly a very skilled modeller! I thought I'd never see the day! Wink

I'll keep the updates coming but fear I'll be very restricted on how much I'll be able to get done over the next 2-3 weeks as we are having some renovations made to the house and I'm going to be really busy at work BUT I have the week commencing 21st May booked off as annual leave! My parents are also on holiday that week which means I'll be able to bring the airbrush in from the workshop and get it set up in the kitchen - I'll be able to bring everything downstairs from my modelling cupdoard like my tools/paints/brushes and weathering products etc too so I can devote the entire table to completing my model over that week so I reckon we could have a finished build at the end of May! After it's completed I might have a crack at a base and a couple of the figures too.

Having the airbrush in the house will be great. I prefer having it in the workshop in Summer due to the heat but it's pretty cold here at present so it will make a nice change.

Chazzer - your build is really looking good. Great work! Now it's complete and you have the stowage on the sides of the vehicle and the Jerry cans placed on the spare wheels make sure you show some attempt by the crew at tying it down to stop it falling off  as it's a simple job and really adds to the realism- sorry if all of this is already your plan! I favour 10ibs breaking strain fishing braid as it looks perfectly like thin rope in a 1/35 scale! It's a great kit, isn't it? Imo one of the best StuG's there is. I really enjoyed building it and the fact they include even a very basic interior detail allows open hatches, unlike my kit which doesn't have a proper gun assembly!

What camera are you using out of interest? You seem to be struggling with blur/wobble and a lack of lighting. The flash tends to just wash everything out. Get some extra lamps maybe? All I've ever used for my photos is the 5mp camera on my Nokia 6500. It's superb and people have even asked what camera I use as my photos have looked so good (sometimes). My Dad has just bought a new Digital Camera so I may have to look at a proper light box and start playing around with the Macro Facility and backgrounds on Photoshop too. I'm definately no photogropher but I really want to be!

Andy - I'm sending you a pm re figure painting buddy so keep an eye out! Geeked

More photos guys - MORE PHOTOS!

All the best and let's keep the GB rolling!

Hello Ben, I am very exited about your build. Your tutorials are fantastic. I learn so much from you! I'm planning to put this tank and more figures in a diorama. I want it to focus on the crew loading up supplies. As you mentioned I need to also show them securing the stowage. I will also take your camera advice. I'll post the info next.

Guys: I forgot to mention the kit and supplies I used. The kit is from Tamiya. It was a fantastic build and the directions were great. Included in the kit is a metal barrel. The tracks are Dragons magic tracks from my parts bin. The stowage is from Legend, Great Wall and odds and ends from the bin. I scratch built the large wooden stowage box. As I said before, the kit was excellent! I weathered with Mig pigments, W/N oils, AK interactive washes. I used only Tamiya spray primer and the rest is Vallejo paints. You all made my build successful!

Andy: How do I get the GB badge? I'm going crazy trying to pick it up. As for my health, I'm 100%. Thanks for all you support.

Another one for ya Andy:

Hey Chazzer,

You are too kind buddy! Being a relatively new modeller (3 years) I remember how hard it was learning everything as this was all totally new to me. I thought I knew a LOT about the history of WWI & WWII but when it came to tanks, weaponry and uniforms etc, I was lost!

I've tried to bear that in mind and although I am yet to post a proper Tutorial I would like too and I try and keep my blogs simple so the newcomers can understand. I was totally self taught, mostly from on here and reading books - getting my head around the Acylic/Enamel thing was the hardest! Now I'm trying to learn how to paint decent figures! Your's came out really well - far better than my attempts so far!

Like I say, I'm far from being a camera expert - very far! But I have learnt that lighting is the key and it seems to be missing from your photos? I.e. not enough and then the flash kicks in and wipes everything out.

I'd say your build is 95% there Scott. Think about your stowage, where it can go and how it will be fixed on. The first thing I notice on a build is magic floating stowage with no attachments. Simple Braid like I use is good for small rope and it scalles out nicely. I see you used the spare track length at the rear to hold stowage-perfect! Look at my Pz III N on page 1 of the GB on the completed builds posts. You will see the little cage/rack thingy I made for stowage like the crews would have knocked together. Look at something like that but keep it simple - all that was made from was fine Brass wire bent to shape to make the rack. Also, Google StuG photos - you'll get some great ideas there dude!

Finally, I'm not sure if it was the flash or what but have you dullcoated the stowage-it looks a little glossy? I'd get the stowage fixed and tied down then add a light coat of matt all over to tone things down followed by some very light pigment. Do you use Enamels or Acylics out of interest?

Then she'll be done but top job so far, really really great stuff!

Take care matey,

Ben Cool

Check this out... if you can look at my stash very closely, I bought couple of AK modulation sets... I am in process of replacing all enamel paints with acrylic paints but it will take some time.

I plan to get two more sets... German Camo and Allied sets.  Maybe for Christmas? Big Smile  I am not sure about AK DVDs because I won't be surprised if they are not captioned or subtitled... remember I am deaf.  So the book was perfect.   Can you please find out if DVD has captions or subtitles?

I was very fortunate because I had a good seat sitting in front of Mig at his workshop last Friday.  Check it out... he is one real cool dude!

You can see my sign language interpreter in the background... AMPS crew was nice enough to let him stand close enough so I can see both Mig and the interpreter at the same time.  The TV and his camera really helped a lot too!

Thanks for the nice words... you are way too nice.  I will check PM after this.

LOL!  You and pin up pictures! Toast I have to buy that book one day.  Yes, you can go to the first or second page where the Hall of Fame is.  You will see GB badge in two different sizes... copy that or save it to your photo bucket.  Then go to your profile and add it at the signature.

Hope it helps? If not, I can always give you a call and walk you thru...

You are always welcome to follow rest of builds since we know how much you love StuGs.

HOLY COW!  You got the Pz III Tauch?!?!?!  Nobody is doing Tauch for this GB and the gap is the only one remaining vacant.  I know you have signed up for Flammpanzer earlier.  Wondering if you have started your Flammpanzer yet?  If not, can you do Tauchpanzer instead because we have two guys doing Flammpanzer.

Yes, it was great seeing you and your wife too!!!  Bet you had fun too?  Hope AMPS returns to Auburn in two years or so.  That museum was awesome too I am glad your wife even enjoyed that too.

Stay in touch dude!

Ahhhh, getting to meet Mig (and see him in action)...too cool! Extreme jealousy on my part.

How is the FAQ2 book? I have FAQ1, wondering how much additional info can be garnered from it.

Cool on the Tauchpanzer getting covered, too - hoping that pans out?

Keep rolling guys!  I will have internet access but it is not always that great at the hotels you know.

Chazz, your Stug is a beauty... but then again I have always been swayed by Nagal or Vargas Girls... perhaps there is some subliminal influence here?

DP, your Stug is looking superb as well.... but without the pinup girl background...Hmm

Recently I finished up a Warriors Panzer Grenadier figure, and I do have display setting in mind for him... but for now he just looks right on my Mk III talking to the TC. What do you think?

Great builds everyone. I love Pz III's and related variants.

Andy, Tony Greenland is from the UK and authored the excellent reference book "Panzer Modeling Masterclass". He is an excellent modeler, though not in the same league as MIG as far as weathering, however he's a great scratch builder.

Ben/Hinsky – Very nice start; look forward to the rest!

Scott/Chazzer – Congrats on the finish! Looks very nice, good weathering. Where did you get the cardboard boxes? I like how they look. Im no expert being very new to armor and a hobby returnee, but a small suggestion – maybe use some tie downs for the storage? Maybe just a thin strip of masking tape to look like some ropes are holding the stowage down. Great build, cheers mate!

Andy – quite the haul there! I have the FAQ  Vol 1 which I bought at half price from Squadron. I really liked it but I had two issues with it: many of the instructions where pictures without captions.. hard for me to follow at times, and  Iwanted info like psi when AB, etc. Second, I use enamels, and AK/Mig centers on using acrylics. Do you know if FAQ Vol 2 still emphasizes acrylics? Yes, I am writing my wish list for the Danbury AMPS : )

To Ben – I use a Future coat after basecoat enamels, let it dry for DAYS, then do pin washes and effects; have only tried color modulation with oils though.  Great info on how you use the products; I have seen the videos at AK Interactive. Oh, and your suggestion of 10lb fishing braid if MUCH better than what I suggested and I will copy your method now : )  (hey, im catching up with the posts!)

Andy - The Stug looks great…. I must admit, those AK/Mig products can be expensive and time consuming but OH BOY they make a difference. VERY nice.  And great pic with the MIG himself!  I got a couple of AK DVDs as a Xmas gift, I can look at them and see if they have captions.  Let me know if you still need the answer.

I also started the Flammpanzer, with the first step being the quasi-religious bathing of the sprues. Will post more info in a couple days (I don’t check my “fun” email every day), as well as some pics of the Flamm and the Tamiya Ausf L WIPs

 Cheers all!

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions. They are very helpful. The reasons for no tie downs or a more secured look is because I've decided to do my first diorama! I hope you will let me "pick your brains" for occasional help. I went to the LHS and picked up some kits and supplies for it. I can't wait to share some of my stuff. I'm short on time tonight so I will post some pictures tomorrow. This journey for me should be some great learning, I'm psyched!!!

Eric- THANK YOU for the link! Beer  I have placed a bid.  Wish me luck!

James- Answer to your question about acrylic and enamel paint in FAQ 2... I glanced thru and it looks like Mig prefers either Vallejo or LifeColor acrylic paint. So if you use enamel paint, you can always spray a coat of clear acrylic first.  I am in process of phasing out enamel paint and replacing with acrylic paint. Stick out tongue

Looking forward to your next update!

Stik- Absolutely if it is not too much trouble for you to take pictures of both Pz and figures. Thanks buddy!

Scott-  That's what Group Builds are for... to help each other.  I received plenty of help at GBs when I joined FSM 2-3 years ago.  And I am still getting help today and I hope to help others too. You are always welcome to build more or join other GBs.  You will always find me in armor GBs!

Scott-  That's what Group Builds are for... to help each other.  I received plenty of help at GBs when I joined FSM 2-3 years ago.  And I am still getting help today and I hope to help others too. You are always welcome to build more or join other GBs.  You will always find me in armor GBs!

Hope you get it. I guarantee it'll be worth it.
