Closing in on finishing out the cockpit...still wet with the oil wash, but here you go:

Don't think I'm going to do pigments after all...the Shiden's very "Wildcatish", with a big tubular fuselage and very small cockpit opening. So most everything's hidden from view.

Yes, I doubled over a 2in piece of low tac 3m painters tape, traced the curve of the painters tape roll (not THAT concerned with the "proper" radius) with a #11 blade and voila', two opposable masks of the exact radius!

Gamera, i just picked up a tamiya ki84 in 48th scale.its an older release but for $ 4.00 im not complaining!! ill post some pics as soon as i get somthin worth showing. 

Doogs: I can see your point, not much to see unless you're a show judge sticking a flashlight down in every cockpit. The metal chipping should highlight some of the detail you normally wouldn't see.

A quick update.  I managed to remove the mess of the failed decals and repainted the affected area.  Now she's reglossed and will attempt to re decal.  I got some Aeromaster replacement decals.

Substantial progress tonight. Cockpit done:

And fuselage, wings and stabs all went together tonight. Stupid me forgot to drill the holes in the centerline for the drop tank. Not sure how I'm going to fix that just yet. Also - I think I taped the cowl on upside down. Have to doublecheck that when it's time to commit glue!

i get for free an old tamiya f1 lotus 107b 1/20 zanardi and  herbert use .... unfortunately who gave me the kit is not a modeller and glued some piece with large amount of CA glue

Stealed from the val and tenzn the ammo types ,so engraved a piece of sprue with cutter and get some ammunition cartridge

and added more details in the cockpit, i think is enough , for the pilot ip will use the kit piece ,not perfect but good

Question - can someone enlighten me as to an equivalent to Gunze's unhelpfully named "propeller color"? Can't seem to find it in stock anywhere and I'm wondering if I can't match it with Tamiya, MM or Vallejo stock.

Doogs, the guys on this thread say that Tamiya XF-61 Red Brown is a good substitute.  Then there is some dissent at the end.  I can't find Mr Color 131 on any conversion chart.

I would say Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown...that`s the color call out for props in most Tamiya kits.

I pretty much consistantly use Tamiya XF-64 when a kit calls for 'propeller color', especially the Hasegawa kits.  There will always be some discussion/debate/controversy about what color is 'just right' - I figure go with what looks good sitting on my shelves in my home.

That truly was a kamakazi plane.

Used the cockpit green /dark yellow mix for the cockpit, also holed the seat 

and molded another cockpit

I did the same thing on the Eduard F6F-3 (forgot to open the holes for the fuel tank).  I ended up shining a flashight down through the cockpit and looking at the bottom of the fuselage.  The holes that I needed to drill out appeared 'lighter' (more transparent) than the surrounding plastic and I was able to use a needle to 'center punch' the middle of the hole and then drill it out. 

Without the cowl glues on you might also try the same thing shining a light through that opening if the cockpit floor blocks the light.

The trick seems to be shining a bright light from the backside of the holes you need to open up.

So I applied most of the decals on the Val, used Solvaset for the first time, seemed to work well and was going to finally shoot the two vertical blue stripes on the aft fuselage.  I decided on MM Chrysler Engine Blue (I picked up on sale at the LHS some time ago).  Looked like a good match, except for one thing, this paint (although looking like many of my other MM enamels on the bottle wrapper) is in fact a "Custom Lacquer ".  I learned DO NOT USE A LACQUER WITH PAINT THINNER!!!   except I learned it a little late..... as it was running down.... smearing and generally looking like krap.  Needless to say, I have a mess to try and fix.  And oh, it's all I can do to keep from having my son toss the Val in the air, whilist I show him what a Remington mdl 870 12 gauge with birdshot will do to a poorly painted Jap Val.

Reasoned explain to the paints and the kit who rules i'm sure you will fix it in best way!

Few updates on the mary cockpit, painted some details and removed with a needle parts of paints from instruments to simulate some detail.

also last nite surfin on web and get some paint scheme to choise, will be restricted between the subjects that have simply markings to reproduce with tape masks, this seems the simpler to reproduce 

now waiting for perfect dry to make a dirty wash and some silver paint scrap

Reasoned: You know there's not much I hate more than having to sand out a paint job and go back and redo stuff. I don't mind the work of doing things half as much as redoing stuff. Good luck.

Bsyamato: Great work on the cockpit there, I feel for you on having to paint all those canopy lines though.
