Carl- My pick would be option A if you can remove few words.   It will be hard to look at the dates and other smaller words when they are that tiny.  Let's say "2011 - 2012" or "9/11 - 3/12" something like that.  What do you think?

I agree Andy . Was also thinking "Blitz France G.B. " ........................to cut down on the wordage .

Got one side and the turret painted.  Really wanted to get that turret done to see how all the masking went.  I am very happy with the results.  Just some minor touch ups

PANZERWAFFE

Well have puttied and placed the Somua down onto the base.  It came out alright, if I do this again will make the cut out section bigger to set the vehicle in.  The tracks do sit flush with the ground now, a good thing, but the hole was not big enough to go down any further.  I'll see what all of you think.

I do think it is much better than before.  Will let dry overnight and see what it looks like in the morning or I should say after work.

Rob , the "set' of the tank looks much more realistic since you fixed the base .................the details on the helmet look superb .Cool And your weathering looks just right also .Beer

Not sure abt Blu-Tak... I have them and I find them too strong or leaving some residue on my kits.  I have used Silly Putty in the past and I plan to use it again and again.  Maybe on my Char if I don't change my mind... Big Smile

Thnaks MD.

I think it was somewhere here in the forums a guy was telling me about using gel toothpaste as a mask. It is squeezed out of something like a small piping bag.  Then just wash away after painting.  I think it would great on something small scale.

We got color!

Green base with some lightened base color for some basic fading.  Now starts the complex masking.  And the decision on which method to do that with.  Use scale drawing to make templates for tape masks or a drawing guides to line out the pattern and paint on liquid mask?  Toohpaste?  Been dying to try that one.   Blu-Tack?

Eric, glad to hear you got some time in on the tools. Progress is progress! I'm hoping to get some time this weekend to start painting on the Pz IV...let's see!

This badge has my vote... it would be great if you can add French flag as a backdrop.  Yes  That will definitely catch alot of attention out there.

I agree.  It looks great!  Heck it still looked great earlier... far better than mine.  Well, I haven't done a base yet so that's why I am happy to see any WIPs on bases.

Nice touch with the helmet... agree with others! Yes

Thanks Cliff, we must of made that last post at the same time.  First time I tried cutting a section out so not sure how it will turn out?  Think it should work though, do not see any reason why it would not work.  I too in the past always had them placed in or on something that would hide how the tracks would sit.  Either in grass, a paved road, rubble or in thick mud.  The mud is easy because you can go back and pack more mud into the tracks.

Thanks Eric and good to hear from you Big SmileIt's good to hear ya had some time to get to the bench.  May not seem like much but the tools are an important detail and I'm sure it's nice to have them done.  Your H39 will still get there, one tool at a time Yes  There still plenty of time left in the GB.  I'm hoping to finish up the Somua soon so that I can start on my next build for your GB, the BRITISH LIGHT TANK MARK VI B.

Great stuff Rob. The helmet came out great. I've only put tanks in grass which kinda covers up any problems of them not fitting the base that well. I'll be keeping what you've done here in mind if I do set one in a road.

Looking great Rob. Love the helmet.

I painted some wood color on my tools and not much more. Sad I was going to spray my camo, but clammed up. I might still try before the day is out. This new gig has stolen my H-39 ***. Angry

OK decided to take a chance and not sure how well it will come out?  When building the base had originally pressed the tank into the putty to make track marks and to give the appearance that the tank had some weight to it by sinking down into the dirt.  When the putty dried the tank no longer fit so just on the road section I had smeared some celluclay on and once again set the tank into it.  This time I left the tank in for some time and was almost unable to remove it.  Once again though after the celluclay completely tried the tank would not fit back into it's location, if any thing it looked worse.  This was all done in the pictures that y'all have already seen.  This is what it looked like

Floating tank, do not like that!

My plan is to cut out a section of the base, put in new putty press in tank and let the tank dry in place.  Since the base is already painted, if I let the tank dry in place will only have to brush paint the areas right by the tracks.

The new hope

After the stress of cutting took a break, talked to the wiener dog, then made this little helmet for the dio.  Not much to brag about but here it is.

The inside used some TP to make a helmet liner.  Cutting the shape with the individual liner pads was a pain.

The outside, cut a small sliver of paper and made the helmet strap.  Found some helmet decals in the spares box.

A view from the front of the dio

Not very exciting but that was my stress reliever.  Now onto final weathering and puttying the Somua into place.

BONDO - Thanks, will follow Carl's instructions and get them cleaned up.  Either way, I'm still looking at getting a new brush but the one I want is not available for order until at least December Sad

CARL - First, thanks for the tip cleaning advise.  Will give it a go and hope for the best

Glad ya like the luggage.  The shovel and exhaust are painted.  First paint base coat of Engine Gray 36076, Chestnut 2107 to start the rust color, then small spots of Rust 1785 this is painted within the area of the chestnut still allowing the chestnut to show on the edges.  Also add some random streaks of the rust as desired.  (Use Burnt Sienna for a more brown color)  Finally finish it off by dry brushing Burnt Metal Buffing Metalizer.  Not sure if you could truly call it dry brushing, these metalizers just dry fast!  Thats it, thats how I usually do most of my rusted items.  Tarps are TP and white glue / water.  Here she is with the second tarp and straps painted.

Think I'm happy with the base too.  Will add just a little dark wash to break the color as Marc had suggested but thats it.

WBILL - As mentioned above will give them a cleaning and see how that goes.  I could be wrong but believe some of the problem is in the body.  The trigger often sticks and the seal where the air enters, behind he nozzle, is looking like it's getting some build up.  It says not to clean down there, except with the tool provided, but I have in an attempt to get some of the build up out.  I have tried brand new tips also to see if that fixed things, it did not.  If all else fails could send it back and see what they say about the warranty?  Would still like to take it apart though, just want to but will hold back for now...maybe Devil

 tigerman:

Bondo, good start so far.

You must have sweated bullets in that Stanford/SC game last night. That was a classic.

Actually mostly I was pissed off. Both teams quit playing defense after the third quarter.

I hate the Trojans and it's always good to beat them, esp. in LA.

Bondo call: OSU beats us this weekend and we beat the Ducks on 11/12.

I was at the Cal game 11/14/09 when the Beavers pretty much humiliated Cal. The next morning I flew up to Eugene for a week of business/ fishing and painting icons.

The United Terminal was full of jubilant folks flying back to Eugene and then on to Corvallis, and it made an impression on me.

But the big story is Harbaugh. How about 6-1 so far???????

Bill that tank begs a pause and what can I say? I am amazed at the detail.

I'll call this a trap game for the Cardinal. If they overlook the Beavers, then bad things might happen. I however, don't think the Beavers will keep up at all. They're terrible this season.

We have a tough schedule ahead of us: the puppies in Seattle, you guys next week at the Farm, and then SC at our house. These next 3 games are critical, plus they're brownie points for beating ranked teams.

Rob, nice work all around! I use an Aztek as well and something you should know is that they have a lifetime warranty...but not if you take the body apart. Wink The tips however are most likely where your problem lies. Carl's got you covered on how to take the tips apart (no warranty issues there) for cleaning/inspection.

Marc, nice work on the details and save/correction on the hatch. Beer

Rob , about those Aztec A.B. tips . like Bondo said there is a spring inside that clogs up with paint . you'd be surprised how much gunk gets stuck in that little spring as the paint passes through it . At the back of the spray tip you will see the end of the needle with a small concave plastic tip on it . Grasp the concave plastic tip with your finger nails and firmly pull it straight out the back . You'll probably think its going to break but it will pull out ok with the correct tension . After cleaning press it back in gently , finish seating it back in by screwing the entire spray tip back into the A.B. housing .Geeked
