Thanks heaps CMK.

The colors used are Tamiya acrylic XF-58 Olive Green over XF-53 Neutral Grey. The wash is just a mix of Lamp Black and Burnt Umber oil paint, thinned with Humbrol enamel thiner and a drop of dishwashing detergent.

Cheers

Excellent looking P-40, Tony.  I really like the colo(u)rs.  Maybe I missed it, but what did you use?

It's a very appealing aircraft.  Nice work.

Here it is. I've gone for a lightly weathered look. I don't have any photos of this aircraft but I am imagining the pre war aircraft maintenance regime to be quite good, despite the tropical environment in Hawaii. I'll add the guns once they arrive. Hope you like it.

Extra work on this little Airfix kit is a pitot from Microtube, Quickboost exhausts, an etched instrument panel, harnesses from masking tape with etched buckles.

The Starfighter Decals were good, glossy, robust, thin, easy to apply, with just one decal silvering. The buzz number 160 was larger than depicted on the instructions. Incidentally, this same aircraft is now depicted in the 'dogfight doubles' release of this kit.

Thanks CMK. I've given it a coat of Future applied with a brush, and a restrained panel line wash using oils. I figured the panel lines don't need too much emphasis. The streaks from the future will all disappear nicely when the flat coat is applied.

Here are the latest progress shots of my Airfix P-40B. I've seen some commentary on the panel lines that they are 'like Matchbox trenches'. I disagree. They are a little deep, but they're not wide, and I think look OK under some paint. Many of us accentuate the panel lines on our models anyhow. I will say that the construction does require some filler around the wing to fuselage joint. I used CA and it worked out fine. I've included a photo to show that. The cockpit build up is quite impressive out of the box. I woulsn't rule out my doing a few more of these along the way.

I sprayed it freehand with my Iwata, no masking which I looooooove, exxcept for the canopy of course. I used the Eduard set for that, and I'd have to say many of the pieces were oversized for this kit and had to be trimmed. That's the first time I've encountered this and defeats the purpose of using the set.

You'll notice on the way that the model lost it's guns. As I was building it, the thought occurred that the guns are the one piece of aftermarket that this thing really needs. However, shortly after resolving to live with the kit items, I dropped it and wiped them off one of the wings. I've taken it as a sign and drilled out recesses to access the Quickboost set when it finally arrives.

I've just given it a coat of gloos, although that was after these photos were taken.

Cheers

I've finally got back to my Airfix Hawk 81. It will be finished in Pearl Harbour markings from the Starfighter Decals sheet.

This is the cockpit, all ready to close up. The kit interior is quite good actually. I've used a Modell-Hobby photo  etched instrument panel, which you really can't see in these photos (I'll try again with a flash), but with a closed canopy  I think the kit decals would be quite acceptable. The harnesses are painted masking tape with some old Model Technologies photo etched buckles that I had lying around, from the very early days of aftermarket goodies being available. It's good to finally use them up. I've also joined the fuselage halves and will fit the wings to fuselage tonight.

The big question I have at the moment is whether the fuselage under the canopy extensions  down the fuselage sides was painted the exterior colour (Olive Drab) or the interior colour (Interior Green) for these early Hawks.

Cheers

just thought someone should post this.

december 7 1941, a day which will live in infamy.
the "attack" begins at approximately 7:51. at approximately 11:00 the last plane landed on the japanese carriers. the time between is filled with death and destruction and the end of paradise. six carriers. approximately 350 aircraft. a plan designed to be just a distraction for the main thrust into the south pacific by japanese naval and army units. just a distraction, one designed to cripple the united states navy so that the japanese could move freely through the pacific.
in the end 2388 military and civilian dead. 2107 navy and marine as well as 233 army and 48 civilians. 1109 military and civilian wounded. 710 navy and marine as well as 364 army and 35 civilians. 44 states represented, as well as the district of columbia, guam, the phillipines, and hawaii. 16 congressional medal of honors given as well as 51 navy crosses, 53 silver stars, four navy and marine corps medals, one distinguished service medal, and three bronze stars. 8 battleships sunk or heavily damaged, one minelayer sunk, two auxilliaries sunk or capsized and one heavily damaged. 169 aircraft lost, 92 navy and 77 army. 150 damaged, 31 navy and 128 army. all this in 110 minutes of combat.
for this amount of damage the japanese lost nine fighters, 15 dive bombers, and five torpedo planes. one I-class submarine was lost as well as the five midget subs. the casualties; 55 airmen, 121 submarine crewmen, and nine midget sub crewmen.
these facts taken from several sources.
the attack was so quick, so sudden, many of those killed didnt even know they were at war. even after the bombs and bullets started falling people didnt believe that they were being attacked. one report of a young man hunting with a cousin didnt believe there was an attack even after his cousin was killed. after that day the hawaiian islands were torn from being a territory governed by a few families to becoming a true part of the united states becoming a state not long after the war. the us navy was forced to change from a navy of battleship groups to a navy centered on the carrier.
today it is said that the arizona still weeps for her crew.

never to be forgotten.

Given that the anniversary of Pearl Harbour is this week, I am planning to commence my Airfix P-40B on Friday evening, and complete it over the weekend.

The USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl had a profound impact when I visited it, and this will be my small dedication to those men.

Regards

Well it took a while, but I finally finished the Dragon Arizona.  In fact, I actually started it December 8th of last year when the GB began, worked until about March (and got about 70% of the work done), then got distracted by other things...  Then earlier this month, I decided to get back with it before the end of the build, and just recently finished.  There might be a couple places that will need touchup paint, but for now, it is done.  And now the pictures:

Very nice.  Always liked the Flying Tigers, so I have been thinking of picking this up.  Will be good to have information on how it goes together.

Hi all,

I've made a start on the Airfix P-40B, as I've been itching to try one of these new Airfix aircraft.. The progress is nothing too interesting. I've just removed all of the parts from the sprue, and cleaned up any mold lines. On this kit there were no sink marks or ejection pin marks to worry about, but there was a little flash. It's a very easy and quick clean up, no complaints here.

The USS Arizona memorial is the most moving place I have ever been to. I can't miss this GB. I've managed to get an Airfix 1/72 P-40B, which I'll do in Pearl harbour defender markings. The kit I have has AVG markings, so I'll need to locate some from the Pearl harbour release or else get some from somewhere else.

Cheers

That looks very nice, I love the NMF with mottled green/brown.

I'll add it the roster as soon as I can, internets playing up (again).

Hi everyone!

Thank goodness for Hurricane season!!! (Sort Of). For me Debby was a rain and wind event that forced me to stay in and get caught up on some buidling! Can't complain too much. I have finished the Kate! Overall I am pretty happy with the product. I will say that this kit did NOT "just fall together" as is to be expected by most Hasegawa kits! Lots of sanding etc.

I went with the Mottled Green/Brown over the NMF scheme. The torpedo was done with Testors Metalizer Steel for the body and Dark anidonic grey for the warhead. I had to hack up the canopy to get the open look. Unfortunately I had couldn't get everything to sit square even with thinning the plastic down. Still it looks better open than closed.

I am 2/3rds the way through this build with my "Zeke" being the only one left. The Kate and Val look good together and with the addition of the Zero it will be complete.

did you know......

one of the original plans called for a full invasion of the hawaiian islands. this was dropped just because of the logistical nightmere it would have become.

That is odd, lewbud.  I have the same kit in my stash, and there are no kill marks on the picture.  It's not that they were blacked out like yours--the illustration shows no kill marks at all.  Very peculiar.

Anyway, I'll be watching your build for insights on construction.  I haven't done a HobbyBoss kit before, looking forward to seeing yours.
