The ship is coming along.  The deck is now attached to the hull, and I'm currentlly pin-washing and dry-brushing.  I was planning on only posting photos as I finish each construction step.  Plus, I wanted to finish my Airfix Group Build project, so I could devote myself to the New Orleans.

And, by the way, I used Ms. OWL's method for painting the radial engine in the Gladiator, for the Airfix build.  It worked well, even in 1/72.  The final results are here:  /forums/t/140302.aspx?PageIndex=60

Thanks, yes the are paint black, I think to reduce glare?

Excellent looking Zero, RRB.  Nice work.

I've finished the Zero, if i compared all my models the Zero is by far the best one ive made.

Its my first 1:48 model, and i would like to build more. I tried some new things like the three layer method, which i stuffed up. So i had to strip all the paint and re-paint it. I also tried giving it a wash.

This was mostly OOB, except for the seatbelts made from thin strips of masking tape and the seatbelt buckels made from some small pices of copper wire. And the brake lines.

Well I've got some more done on my Zero, main landing gear, drop tank and air brakes have been attached, still have to complete the tail wheel other small bits and pieces and the broken antenna. 

More pics should be up tomorrow if everything goes too plan.

After stripping all the paint off my Zero the past few days, i got too the stage where i could paint it agian.

I only had a little bit of XF-12 left so i used literally every last drop from the jar of paint, and it only just covered the plane.

Then i painted on the bands around the tail, with humbrol acrylics 24 (yellow) and 60 (red). I only had a little bit of overspray  around the tail.

and now i have to repaint the wheel wells and flap area.

Measure 21 is what CA-38 wore that day, I am certain. I'll have to go back and see....

 

 

CA-38 was the "San Francisco?"  Was she at Pearl on 7 December? 

 

 

She was, tied up directly across from the NO. The engines were torn down and she was being refit with added 1.1's.

 

 

This is good to know, since Snyder & Short have both CA-32 and 38 wearing the same measures until 1944.  Thanks.

I went there in 1959, and the Memorial was not built. We went up to see a Japanese wreck on the hill. Dad went out on a submarine with our friend the XO and we did the officers club thing at Ford Island. I was 3 in drop panel jammies.

Remember it well though.

That's like Desert Storm is today.

I got interested in ships after decades of doing nothing but planes, when my wife and I visited her parents in New Orleans back in 2009.  They moved there, where her father is working with rebuilding  damage from Katrina.

They took us over to Mobile where we toured the USS Alabama.  I was tempted to buy a model of the ship in the gift shop, but didn't know what I'd do with it since I didn't know anything about ships or what to paint them.

Eventually, the internet solved that problem, and Synder & Short are helpful, as are the WEM paints for navy vessels.  Now I have a stash of about ten ships in the closet--including the Alabama--but the NO boat was the only one I had that was at Pearl Harbor.

Mine stays well away from my models, though I found some white fur in the box one time…

Othertimes she sits on my seat at my modelling desk, and falls asleep so I can't do anything until she wales up.

Im going to get a German U-boat sometime, I'm not too interested in boats though. But submarines fascinate me. 

It's my dog, Sergeant Saunders, who likes to sit with me when I'm at the computer.  He makes it hard to type, since he likes to rest his head on my arm.

Ships are a whole different type of modeling.  I had to adopt some new techniques, and even got into some photo-etched stuff to replace pieces I lost.  It was a "learning curve."

Well I have 1 of the 3 bird down now. I really think that the Val is the hardest of the kits....as far as extra love needed to make it look OK.

I ended up just using a sharp graphite pencil to highlight some of the panel lines. During Pearl Harbor most of these planes were early in their service lives with little wear. Overall I pretty happy with the finished product. It was good to work on my seam line work (which is really my weakest area.)

The insignias are mix of Hasegawa and the Fujimi sets. I painted the Band and wheel markings. Thanks for looking. Now on to the next one.
