Airfix Group Build 2011-2012
Posted by Scorpiomikey on Thursday, August 11, 2011 4:23 PM

After a wee bit of interest in the feeler thread im posting a proper GB here with all the rules.

Lets get into it.

1. Must be an airfix kit. Can be from any time period, any tooling, as long as its branded airfix. (you can even paint up the original airfix combs if you really want, lol)

2. If you have a kit that is branded differently but is deffinatly an airfix tooling, if you can prove this i will accept it.

3. Start Date will be sept 1st 2011. This gives enough time for people to prepare.

4. End date will be Sept 1st 2012. Plenty of time to work through the more complicated kits.

5. When signing up please post Kit name and scale.

6. It can be OOB or as much AM or scratchbuilding as you desire.

Ill have a badge up before the start date.

Off we go people.

Enjoy yourselves.

Thanks to VanceCrozier we have a badge. If anyone has any special size requests feel free to ask him.

Same rules as always, save the badge to your own personal image hosting account before putting it in your signature. A completed entry is required before you may take the badge.

I have a Gloster Gladiator I'd like to build, 1/72 scale, using the Airfix kit and Xtradecals Battle of Britain decal sheet.  According to the Airfix tribute forum, the original dates back to 1956.

Heh heh, I went out to the shop and scanned the stash.

The original release TSR.2 in 1/72.

That'll do it for me, along with the floater.

No-one tackling that most iconic and quintessentially "Airfix" kit, the 1/72 Spitfire Mk1a ??

I have one in a Heller boxing (trust me, I know an Airfix pilot figure when I see one).

ME!!!

My daughter went to the Imperial war museum and brought this home with her.

It is the 1/72nd Spitfire MK1a starter set with 4 little pots of paint, brush and cement.

I have plans to get to it at some stage and am looking at buying a set of Airfix figures and building a small  diorama.

Can you add me please scorpiomikey

Hey Jafa,

I believe you have the latest and greatest 2010 tool Mk.1a.

Nice..Smile

EDIT: Actually, now that I've looked it up,  I'm not too sure which one you have Dunce If it has 29 parts, it will be the "classic" version.

I might keep looking for something appropriate. (and maybe do the "classic" version Spit.)

OK OK - I see the end date in 2012 - I'll officially put myself down with my Heinkel 177 in 1/72. I wonder if I dare use the original decals? Hmm I'll have to check them out & test an unwanted one.

On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister

Microscale Liquid decal film all round perhaps?

Might be an essential accessory for everyone in this GB Wink

I've got a bottle for just such an occasion! But the Magister I posted earlier - used the original decals! (Where else was I going to get decals for a Belgian trainer!?) The only thing I did was sun-bleach them in the window. Actually that reminds me, if I want to try the kit decals I really should hang them somewhere right now while the summer sun is on my side.

Okay, add a classic Airfix Spitfire to my Wellington.  The reboxing is #1071.  #1071a is the new-tool Mk Ia and #2010 is the new-tool Mk Ia/IIa.

Yes 29 parts, no cockpit detail at all, says AS50077 on the box and instruction set. I am going to try and find images of the instrument panel to scratch build, or at least print and stick?

Also need to try and cut the canopy to have it open for display (if I can scratch together a cockpit).

Try this site:  3D-Kits.  He does some nice add-ons and upgrades for the Airfix Spitfires.

I wonder if anyone will notice if I use the slightly wrong instrument panel.....

The canopy in that kit is a pain in the rear. You may wish to check this out http://www.falconmodels.co.nz/clearvax/set02.html (you'll be supporting a local company too. Big Smile ) The Mk.1 canopy is also avaliable as a "single" from Squadron.

Thanks Phil,

I had thought of them, I am currently working on a 1/48 Tamiya Wildcat and had to replace the canopy (the Tamiya didn't fit well in the open position then failed in a non passive manner whilst fat fingers were trying to add masking..) and I found the Falcon set at my lhs, so I have allsorts of spare canopies.

I will look at them again for the 1/72 stuff once I get started on the Spit...

Hi Guys

I'm definitely up for this one.

I haven't decided on a kit as yet - what are the rules concerning kits already commenced ?

If it has to be an 'uncommenced' kit it will be one of :

727

Vostok/Soyuz

Me 110 new tool

Canadair Sabre with RAAF markings

Can't wait to start yet another  kit !

Rear Admiral George Morrison. He is related to me through my Great Grandfather, and had a famous son. I like the picture; he looks pretty sharp.
